Staff Advice Led to Martin Recall
Staff Advice Led to Martin Recall
Saturday, 22nd Jan 2011 10:22

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he decided to recall winger Lee Martin from his spell at Charlton on the advice of Town's backroom staff. The Blues utilised their 24-hour call back option on the 23-year-old former Manchester United man on Tuesday.

Reserves coach Chris Kiwomya, keeper-coach Jim Hollman, fitness coaches Antonio Gomez and Simon Thadani and chief scout Steve McCall remain at the club from the pre-Jewell era and the new manager says he consulted with them before making decisions on Town's on-loan players.

Jewell said: “I spoke to some of the staff about the players on loan and they seemed to think that at this moment in time Lee would be an addition to our squad to try and improve us. Our defensive record isn’t too bad, but we haven’t scored a lot of goals, so he’s just another option really.

“I know he’s been on loan at a few clubs. I saw him play for Sheffield United against Manchester City when that balloon was on the pitch and it was blowing a gale. I saw him play really well in that game.

“I think the club paid quite a lot of money for him from Manchester United, something like £2 million. I don’t know what happened there, but he’s welcome here and it’s up to him to get in the team.

“I’ve had a quick chat with him and he’s fine. He’s more than happy to come back because this is a great football club. At least he’s had some games at Charlton, although he didn’t play at the weekend. Like everyone, it’s up to Lee.”

Kevin Lisbie, who is at Millwall for the season, can also be recalled at 24 hours’ notice, while Pablo Couñago’s season-long spell at Crystal Palace can be curtailed if all three parties — both clubs and the player — agree to do so.

Fingers crossed Lee Martin can flurish under the new leadership, he did well in charlton, fair enough it's a league lower, but not every player is like Sam Parkin.

Talentless waste of money - another of Keanes bad decisions along with the ineffective Leadbitter. Of Keane's 'big buys' only Priskin is worth keeping

Everyone else bar Keane thinks he had something to offer then. getting him out on loan looks like being just another of RK hissy fits to show that he was the boss.

I'm thinking that we all might be in for a surprise when Martin rejoins the squad. It is difficult to underestimate the difference in form that a change of manager can have. I know that I wouldn't perform well in my job with some huge bloke screaming at me about how useless I was. Professionals are no doubt considerably tougher - both mentally and physically - than I am but I still think that there was an awful lot of negative psychology affecting performances and decisions, that Jewell is beginning to sort out - and listening to his staff and recalling Martin is a small step forward in this process.

Rk signed Martin on the basis that he had that Man Utd desire to succeed, so he knew that should have been instilled on him from day one. Despite his talents Lee Martin didn't want it enough.

Heres a second and last chance Lee. Its ultimately up to players not managers

@lukeym18 Let's see who the real 'Clown is shall we? You said RK did not take advice from his back room staff. Care to offer the proof you have of this? Have you got the names and the dates of when the back room staff tried to offer advice but RK told them he is not interested? Have you statements from the back room staff stating that RK never came and asked for their opinions? I only ask this as you made a statement of fact so obviously you have the proof please share it? Or can we take a guess at who the real clown is?

Wicked blue what planet are u on. It is an indication that keane did not listen as the backroom staff have obviously said good things about him, all of them, and hes come back and played well. We scored 3 goals when keane said we did not have 3 goals in us. as time goes by we are seeing just how bad keane was as a manager when compared to a good one like jewel.

The amount of bull on here is unreal. When Keane was here everyone was saying Martin was a waste of space. Just because Jewell calls him back it's as if he was sent on loan out of spite, not because he was pure sh1te. Anything to bash keane. He's back cos we're short of numbers, hopefully he's copped on and realises he has to put in the effort if he wants to make it. If not, Jewell will ship him out pronto !
