Jewell: Edwards Has Been a Revelation
Jewell: Edwards Has Been a Revelation
Saturday, 16th Apr 2011 09:07

Blues boss Paul Jewell says Carlos Edwards has been "a revelation" since switching from midfield to right-back . The Town manager says he was first impressed with the Trinidadian, whose appearance total has triggered another year on his contract, playing at full-back early on in his career.

Jewell said: “I remember when Carlos played at Wrexham at full-back and I think he’s been a revelation. He probably hasn’t had his two best games of late, but I think he’s been terrific.

“He’s got great recovery, great energy, good use of the ball and he’s got a couple of goals from there as well.

“I’m looking to improve all areas [of the squad in the summer]. If I can improve any area on the pitch and it’s in my budget, I’ll do it, but I think Carlos has been excellent for us.”

Edwards himself says Town have missed out on a good opportunity to push for promotion this season having been inconsistent throughout the campaign: “Looking back at the beginning of the season, we started off well, but we didn’t have what it takes to get that momentum to push us forward and to press.

“We would win one, draw one, win one and then lose five. It’s been a rollercoaster. We never got a decent run going where we could say ‘listen, we are pushing for promotion’ or even staking a claim for a play-off spot. We were not far off, but then again it was so near and yet so far.”

Personally i think Carlos is a good back up for both right back and right midfielder but a team wanting to be top 6 or so, but not quite consistent enough to be in the team (as a first choice) for either.

Carlos has good feet but he Tends to overplay the ball, & if it's lost on the wing that's one thing but doing that at full back can be fatal imo

I like the fact that we have a footballing, attacking option with Carlos a right back, a poor man's Evra/Bosingwa type of full back, rather than a Gary Neville/Danny Mills type. In the Championship it adds a touch of quality. Can he defend though? I thought he did a great job handling Max Gradel up at Leeds, one of the most formidable left wing challenges he'll face in this division. After the first 20 mins when Gradel cut in a couple of times and shot, Edwards read him well and handled him for pace, Gradel never really got a look in for the rest of the match. A new right back has been one of our top priorities for strengthening for a while, personally I don't think it is any more.

wouldn't go that far at all Jewell. And what about Peters...you haven't even seen him play right back?

When he plays an advanced role he always want to play it back, when he plays at RB he overcooks it,his passing is terrible from a player of his expirience.
We need 2 full backs, decent defender, holding midfielder,20 goal man and a nippy striker.Happy shopping PJ.

Ernie and back the boss

yes he has been cought out on positioning a few times but wouldn't say his positioning is shocking.
Pj has watched peters many times in training as he has with every player not in his 18 man squad.

Ernie - Jewell saw Peters play right back at Chelsea, Millwall and as sub v Forest. That was more than enough for me and Jewell.

Edwards has done v well. Great quality on the ball and technically a very good footballer.

His positioning is not shocking at all. He's been outstanding! It's just a shame that some people in Row X in the Lower SBR Stand can't take the blinkers off and see it! (They'll know who they are!).
