Town Linked With Belgian Midfielder Thursday, 19th May 2011 10:14
Town are targeting Belgian international midfielder Faris Haroun, according to reports in his home country. The 25-year-old is currently with Germinal Beerschot but the Antwerp-based top flight side are looking to offload some of their higher earners this summer.
Fellow Belgians Zulte Waregem are also believed to be interested in the Brussels-born player, who scored five goals in 28 matches during 2010/11.
Haroun, who also holds a Chadian passport, played youth football with RSD Jette and RWD Molenbeek but began his professional career with KRC Genk, making his senior bow in the 2003/04 season.
The 6ft 2in tall midfielder, who is reportedly keen on a move to England, joined his current club ahead of the 2008/09 season, having been a member of Belgium’s Olympic side in Beijing, where he narrowly missed out on a medal. The U23 team, which also included Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen and Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, lost the third/fourth play-off to Brazil.
Haroun has been capped six times by his country at full level and has a year remaining on his Germinal Beerschot contract.
Town are known to be eyeing the Belgian market with a scout reported to have watched the recent Anderlecht-Club Brugge clash.
Meanwhile, Porto manager Andre Villas-Boas paid tribute to former Blues boss Sir Bobby Robson after his side's 1-0 Europa League final victory over Braga last night: "I dedicate this win to my technical staff, the players of Porto and the supporters. But I'd like to pay a complement to Pep Guardiola, which might come as a surprise, and to Jose Mourinho.
"He [Mourinho] introduced me to professional football, and I'd like to dedicate this to him. And to someone who has already left us, but was decisive in my career: Sir Bobby Robson. I never had the opportunity to say farewell to him. I'd like to dedicate this to him and his wife, Elsie, and thank him for everything he's done for me.
"Bobby allowed a 16-year-old to approach him and talk about football tactics with him. Then he took me to training, watching training sessions. He had that respect for a young boy who had just approached him in an apartment block in Porto.''
Legendary Blues manager Robson was Porto boss between 1994 and 1996.

Does seem to fit the bill though, We need a bit of height in the Midfield, A Belgian international must have some quality about him (For Championship level). Just seems like another player where we are puching above are weight a bit, But we will see, Being Linked with a player can mean anything.
And here stand the ignorant fans once again... You do realise that the transfer window doesn't actually open until July 1st, so it's just a case of agreeing a deal. Also isn't being linked with these kind of players a good thing? It shows that Jewell is after the right people and they are not always true anyway.
Sign him on and send him up for the corners. We can use some extra presence in the box to score from set pieces and create some scraps tofeed on.
It was a delightful tribute to Sir Bobby from Andre Villas-Boas who made the effort to remember and thank him. I also had the honour and pleasure of meeting Sir Bobby on four occasions and found him to be amazingly approachable even though there was nothing tangible in it for him. How refreshing and long may he be remembered.
as already said - if you dont like the rumours then as you read the 1st line dont bother reading it anymore. Simple as. Or does it allow some of you to moan even more
Loved the tribute to Sir Bobby, as we all know it is well deserved.
Back to link :- Paul Jewell said that he would not talk about players until they were signed, [ as they had a habit of changing their minds ] but would speak about them when they had signed, hence it has gone quiet on the signing front.
As for the links :- Surely being linked with high profile players can only alert other quality players about our intent for next season. Bring 'em on I say !
Why are town fans so negative with transfers. Anyone linked= no..prem reject, or no...who? , or no...overrated or whatever. If we were not linked then that would be worse! What could you winge about then?
Bongospongomeinster=funny
Also, sign this guy up. Hes tall, a full international and wont cost a fortune.
Ok, it's only rumour and these are all just links but pretty much every player we've been linked with so far has been pretty decent and in some cases, quite exciting. PJ is clearly looking to fill the right areas with the right quality and with a wide scouting network. My only question mark is that a lot of the linked strikers are fairly obvious well known choices (ie no bargain, hidden gems).
Another day, another link. PJ said he was hoping to SIGN someone last week (expected to be a player out of contract), then it was going to hopefully be this week. So far and nothing!
stinkiusminkius - I think the reason they're all pretty obvious targets is because they are media-generated speculation. The mainstream press don't have the scouting network to go looking for 'hidden gems'. And the club certainly aren't going to be trumpeting 'bargains' until they're in the bag!
However, as you and others have said, the links are all to decent players and this would be indicative of a positive and ambitious mood around the club, which the papers are picking up on. May also cause good players to seriously consider coming to Town, as a team on the move (upwards) and targeting promotion.
We can't sign anyone until 1 July...so if your waiting for a new signing in June you are out of luck....so for now all you are going to get is links so I suggest all those who don't like links go follow the cricket......
jas0999 - hold your horses! The season isn't even finished yet (play-off final is 30th May - 11 days away).
And it seems Town have tried to make signings, the approach to Doncaster for Sharp and Coppinger. This was turned down. So although Jewell "hoped", his hopes have not (so far) been realised.
Have to agree its time to try to be a little bit more positive. We wont attract Drogba or Benzema so lets just see what happens over the next three months and have a little faith.
