Jewell: Enquiry Not Bid for St Ledger
Jewell: Enquiry Not Bid for St Ledger
Tuesday, 14th Jun 2011 10:17

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that he has rekindled his interest in Preston North End defender Sean St Ledger but says he is yet to make an offer for the Republic of Ireland international. The Blues previously targeted the former Peterborough man in January with reports last week claiming Town had made a new bid for the 26-year-old.

But Jewell says things haven’t quite reached that point: “I spoke to Maurice Lindsay, the Preston chairman last night. We have enquired about Sean but it is a long way from happening.

“There are a number of players we have been looking at and he is one of them. We haven’t made an offer and I haven’t spoken to the player. We just asked about his availability.”

The Blues boss has already added one central defender to his squad, released Reading veteran Ivar Ingimarsson, but feels with Gareth McAuley, Troy Brown and Tom Eastman all leaving he needs another one.

Town are also thought to be chasing St Ledger’s Preston team-mate Keith Treacy with Burnley also reportedly set to make a bid for the Ireland international.

Meanwhile, the Blues are claimed to have been eyeing MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One side Afan Lido’s keeper Aaron Ryan, who is set to join Walsall on trial. Bolton, Cardiff and Coventry are also believed to be interested in the 17-year-old ex-Port Talbot Town academy player.

strange that deals are moving forward OK now the manager is speaking to other chairman and not Clegg. if only Keano had done the same.......

fallyblue - I think it was probably more the case Clegg and Evans had lost faith in Keane and therefore refused to bankrole new signings?

Keane was given millions to spend and the team showed little in return - a fair reason for the club feeling hard done by!

Under Jewell, Clegg and Evans are backing him just the same as Keane when he first started.

Strange pattern: Leicester go down we sign their CB (McAuley). Preston go down we want their CB (St Ledger). In theory you'd think a relegated club means a poor defence but both are good players at Championship level!

JayITFC, they are probably crap players at the start of the season, but given how busy they are during it they end up looking great! :D

Jewell has a way with people, Roy.....Roy...I have nothing

Would be a great signing if we got SSL.

Hopefully the fact he is a International player and Trappatoni will have a quiet word in his shell like to say Div 1 and Euro 2012 don't mix..

Not seen anything of treacle....But I still want El Chubbo (Civelli) to come back into the starting XI

@fallyblue you're an idiot if you believe that, RK would have made the original enquiries just as PJ does Clegg gets involved when the financial side comes into it.....get over your bitterness against Clegg and stop listening to everyone that uses rumours and made up stories as a stick to beat the man with.....they have not a clue and NOT ONCE have any of these morons actually offered any real evidence against the man......

Wickedblue Clegg's record makes you look the idiot for defending him.

Shefki does not live in Ipswich. When he was with Town he only rented. He comes back very often and stays with our mutual friend in Colchester! His heart is ITFC but knows that a coaching role in the future is his only real chance to be with Town again.

SSL would be a very great addition. Carry on the good work PJ.

clegg has done nothing wrong he offers what ever m.e tells him too, keane had a gripe with him over the derry transfer and that didn't happen because m.e had lost a bit of faith in keane, but was willing to give him half the season.
austin transfer was a red herring to get a better deal from burnley he was never coming here.

And what is Clegg's record ITFC1981?

To all you Clegg knockers, you are very boring now, biggest
Mistake he made was his part in getting keane in,
We can all be wise afterwards, can't we? Clegg played a part
In getting Paul Jewells signature, and Paul jewel is the man to takes
us forward, something you Clegg knockers need to do, MOVE On.
With more good signings to come, it's starting to get interesting.

I reckon that it's all a smokescreen - read PJ's other comments and you'll see that he clearly prefers a scenario whereby it's all kept hush hush until finalised so I doubt that he'd come out and make it public that he's interested in a certain player unless it was just a ruse to take attention away from a situation that he is genuinely interested in pursuing. I agree that SSL would be a good signing for all of the reasons that are well stated but I don't think PJ is interested in a bidding war for him and it would be really surprising if there weren't lots of clubs after him. Mark my words, the next centre back signing will probably be someone that hasn't even really been mentioned in any rumours to date - such as the lad at Bournemouth. It makes me laugh, I'm as addicted to the rumours as everyone else but let's face it - whilst it's all a bit of fun speculating, most of it is utter b@ll@cks and I have to say that it makes me cringe when someone posts "just seen so and so at PR, or my mate knows....."

St ledger would be a great signing andI know it`s an enquiry about him but i thought the club didn't speak about possible signings.
They were not happy when portsmouth had done a this with norris in January.
