Koumas Linked With Town and Wednesday
Koumas Linked With Town and Wednesday
Thursday, 23rd Jun 2011 15:19

Town and League One Sheffield Wednesday are reported to be fighting it out for the signature of released Wigan midfielder Jason Koumas. The former Wales international was signed by the Blues’ assistant manager Chris Hutchings during his time as boss of the Latics and also by current Owls chief Gary Megson when he was at West Brom.

Having been a youth player at Liverpool, the 31-year-old began his senior career with Tranmere, moving on to the Baggies after four years as a pro at Prenton Park for a fee of £2.25 million in 2002.

After he had been at Cardiff on loan, Hutchings took the Wrexham-born player to Wigan for £5.3 million in July 2007.

His four-year spell at the DW Stadium wasn’t a huge success, the 5ft 10in tall midfielder making only 36 starts and 25 sub appearances, scoring two goals.

Koumas, who was capped 34 times by his country, scoring 10 goals before retiring from international football in 2009, spent last season on loan back at Cardiff but again failed to make a significant impact, scoring two goals in six starts and a further 21 games from the bench.

Earlier today, TWTD Message Board posts claimed Koumas had been spotted with his agent at Portman Road late last week. Other clubs at Championship and League One level are also likely to be interested.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers are reported to have turned down an offer of £2.8 million for striker Billy Sharp from an unnamed Championship club. That side is unlikely to be the Blues, who had an earlier £2.3 million offer rebuffed, with manager Paul Jewell having ruled out a renewed move for the former Sheffield United man.

Elsewhere, Dundee United winger Craig Conway, claimed to be a Town target by Scottish papers towards the end of the season, has joined Cardiff City on a three-year deal.

And finally, former Town striker Neil Woods has been appointed head of youth development at Walsall.

Has always impressed me with his dead-ball skills, bit of creativity in midfield, could be a good signing if we get him.

yes please . I think koumas is a quality player at this level .. go get him PJ. If that is town who have bid for sharp it would suggest that wickham is deffo on his way out this summer despite all the right noises coming from the club. Would be a shame but like many before me have said anything in the 10m mark is just too good to refuse

Great signing if we were to get him, just being linked so far though.

to old, which ever club he is at, he can never maintain a first team place. Are we only looking at freebies unwanted by their own club?

Gavin Williams ... ring a bell? I would expect koumas to be just like him when he played for us. I think we will get him but i would much prefer someone with a greater ability to play with a bit more skill and ability.

Shut up Whoppit, its people like you who were moaning that we always pay over the odds and never snap up players for next to nothing. If you can't say anything positive just p1$$ off you clown.

I would be a bit concerned about his lack of regular football over the last few years but certainly has the eye for a defence splitting pass and is/was excellent from set pieces for WBA I seem to recall. How hungry is he for success though???

Is Jewell only looking at championship players that are free/unwanted at other clubs??? Seems like it to me....

Koumas didn't make an impact at Cardiff, and I honestly don't think he would at town. Personally think jewell should leave this one. The other 3 signings have been great so far.

Could be the key to a good season ala Bullard.

Worth a gamble if he's on a free.

Still think we need a "captain figure" in midfield though.

Whoppit,

Whats the weather like in America?

Listen you thing that opens a door, if you had actually bothered to come over to england and actually watch a game you would have seen that we need strength in depth not just a bare eleven, PJ is building a squad of players not just the team to go out and play on a saturday afternoon. He's totally under control of what he is doing and i'm sure he will be making bids for other players in the coming days/weeks ahead.

Any true Town fan can see that.......
