Koumas Linked With Town and Wednesday
Koumas Linked With Town and Wednesday
Thursday, 23rd Jun 2011 15:19

Town and League One Sheffield Wednesday are reported to be fighting it out for the signature of released Wigan midfielder Jason Koumas. The former Wales international was signed by the Blues’ assistant manager Chris Hutchings during his time as boss of the Latics and also by current Owls chief Gary Megson when he was at West Brom.

Having been a youth player at Liverpool, the 31-year-old began his senior career with Tranmere, moving on to the Baggies after four years as a pro at Prenton Park for a fee of £2.25 million in 2002.

After he had been at Cardiff on loan, Hutchings took the Wrexham-born player to Wigan for £5.3 million in July 2007.

His four-year spell at the DW Stadium wasn’t a huge success, the 5ft 10in tall midfielder making only 36 starts and 25 sub appearances, scoring two goals.

Koumas, who was capped 34 times by his country, scoring 10 goals before retiring from international football in 2009, spent last season on loan back at Cardiff but again failed to make a significant impact, scoring two goals in six starts and a further 21 games from the bench.

Earlier today, TWTD Message Board posts claimed Koumas had been spotted with his agent at Portman Road late last week. Other clubs at Championship and League One level are also likely to be interested.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers are reported to have turned down an offer of £2.8 million for striker Billy Sharp from an unnamed Championship club. That side is unlikely to be the Blues, who had an earlier £2.3 million offer rebuffed, with manager Paul Jewell having ruled out a renewed move for the former Sheffield United man.

Elsewhere, Dundee United winger Craig Conway, claimed to be a Town target by Scottish papers towards the end of the season, has joined Cardiff City on a three-year deal.

And finally, former Town striker Neil Woods has been appointed head of youth development at Walsall.

Carson will be one of the youth we are looking for this season and someone like Koumas along side to help him will be very good for the lad.

Koumas is talented but bloody lazy and getting on a bit. He won't change his ways. Ellington and Chopra - already signings who have rather underachieved in recent times and if we can't make the big signings we'd all love - and I think Sharp is outstanding at this level - then I would certainly prefer to see younger, ambitious players to be added. A different kind of gamble, but at least a bit less soul-destroying to watch than Chris Bart-Williams, Ivan Campo and Jason Sc...oh hang on, I will still try to be on his side for now. PS Cardiff really aren't that much better than us, and he made no impact there.

Koumas would be an excellent signing. For some reason I thought he was alot older than 31, he seems like he has been around for years

naa: Did you cut and paste?
Koumas was an excellent player several seasons back, would be an excellent addition if PJ and the coaching staff can help him find some form.

Wouldnt mind him, but i think we could do better. neil danns would be a great midfield addition. as for sharp, who i think would be great at town, i think donny are taking the piss. We could always get him for half that if we need him next year, after donny go down, a la preston & st ledger

Not sure what the negatives are all about, he would be a good addition to the squad which we need as we are lacking in the creative midfield area! Koumas plus another younger creative midfielder and as someone has said we have got Carson who would only benefit from his experience good and bad.

He has undoubted flashes of quality but I seem to think his attitude used to let him down a bit, maybe being young he believed the hype.

However he is older and wiser now so if PJ thinks he can get a couple of good seasons out of him and his attitude and hunger for the game are good, and PJ does seem to be a good judge of character, then why not I suppose.

I hate all this but and if negaivity. Why? IMO ... XX paced himself, doing just enough, no more, accept when selling himself - grossly overpriced signing ... JK has more kinetic skill in one leg ... IMO

Could be a great signing if we pull this one off. Jewell i believe has what it takes to get these former players fired up.

Dear me Whoppit your last few comments have smacked of considerable desperation on your part. I mean seriously man; you need to pace yourself a bit more. Craving so much attention so frequently's only going to make you go stale - which you evidently are in the eyes of most posters already (perhaps why merely a handful of people have responded to you lately).

A couple of tips:

Firstly, make your negativity more believable - there's no point attacking every news article, as interest in you will wane rapidly.

Secondly, don't lower yourself to making comments regarding a fanbase or anything of such ilk - this type of attention seeking really waters down any animosity towards you from TWTDers, as it is more and more apparent to everyone that you're just a monotonous troll.

You could even throw in a bit of positivity every so often - it would give a degree of credence to your otherwise overwhelmingly pessimistic, spurious and unintelligible statements.

Koumas has bags of experience, is very good at dead ball situations, has guile to open up defences, just would need good man managment to coax out the best in him. Over to you Mr Jewell. Go get him.

Shame about Conway going to Cardiff, would have been an excellent signing on a Bosman free. Also noticed Dundee United's Margaro Gomis (who we were also linked with in the past) has joined Birmingham for nothing. What happened to scouting the Scottish market? Both are excellent players. Would like to see David Goodwillie snapped up. Young, hungry and with a nasty streak. Scotland's Young Player of the Year. Priced at around £2 million - bargain!

Koumas on a free transfer would be a great move IMHO.
31 is hardly ancient and I have always be impressed by him when I've seen him play.
He may not be quite as good as Bullard, but he does have a lot of ability as well as experience and not on ridiculous wages.
Go get him PJ

Would rather steer clear of Goodwillie. His behaviour off the field is questionable to say the least. End up paying 2m and he will get banged up !

Koi as is a talented player at this level. Hope we can get hold of him.

I belive it was town that bid 2.8m for Billy Sharp that got rejected and Doncaster are holding out for 3m.
