West Brom Linked With Cresswell Move
West Brom Linked With Cresswell Move
Saturday, 25th Jun 2011 09:12

West Brom are set to swoop for Town target Aaron Cresswell, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. The 21-year-old is out of contract at Tranmere this summer with sources in the North-West previously claiming that the Blues are close to signing the highly-rated left-back.

The Baggies are said to have agreed personal terms with the Liverpool-born youngster, who was first mentioned in connection with Town in early May.

Rovers are entitled to compensation for Cresswell because he is under 24 years of age and earlier in the week their manager Les Parry said his club had turned down an offer from a Championship club.

According to this morning’s report, West Brom are yet to agree a deal with Tranmere and the matter could go to a tribunal.

With Kilkenny and Pearce moving to other clubs, it could be the third time in 24 hours that we end up disappointed! Cresswell would have been an excellent signing. Hopefully PJ has several back-ups.

We don't actually know whether pj was trying to sign these players. We only know what has been written third party in a newspaper. Maybe we were but it is just as likely they were never coming here anyhow. I'd rather wait to hear something from the club once we have signed than listen to gossip and get disappointed when some player sgns for someone else.

Agree with djgooder - too much paper talk and rumour. Be patient and wait for Paul Jewell to get the people he wants.

Jas0999 - I agree it will be disappointing if Cresswell chooses West Brom over Ipswich, however if they are offering him Premiership football and a better financial package, there isn't much PJ or anyone at Town could do about it. I take encouragement that we were trying to sign this type of player to begin with. Sometimes we will land them, sometimes we wont...

Regarding Pearce, I've read that he is a left sided centre back, and we already have Delaney and Smith competing for that position, so there is no need to reinforce there when we have other areas that require attention (right back for example). As for Kilkenny, I'm not convinced we were ever seriously chasing him either...

Mungo - I agree and I'm not blaming PJ if we fail to pull off these signings. As I said on another thread, PJ has yet to even confirm whether he was indeed after these players. I just hope we have other targets, but after three pieces of good business (although for me jury out on Ellington) I have no doubt PJ will deliver. It's just a real pity if these players go elsewhere, particularly Cresswell. Personally I rate Pearce above Delaney and Smith and from what PJ has said it would seem he is after another CB - which is good news.

I thought this was a done deal and would be anounced on Monday. What do I know. Maybe this is why I'm a rent old man and not a football manage.
