Old Boy Wright Training With the Blues
Old Boy Wright Training With the Blues
Friday, 8th Jul 2011 14:09

TWTD understands that former Town keeper Richard Wright is training with the Blues at Playford Road. The 33-year-old was released by Sheffield United at the end of the season and is currently looking for a new club.

Wright joined the Blades in September 2010, having been let go by Town at the end of the previous season, but made only two appearances while at Bramall Lane before a knee injury which required surgery ended his campaign early.

The one-time Arsenal, Everton and West Ham keeper’s presence at Playford Road alongside his mentor Malcolm Webster, who rejoined the Blues last week, is likely to lead to speculation that a third spell with Town might be in the offing, however, we understand that the ex-England international is only back at the club in order to get himself fit while he searches for a new team.

why are people banging on about age? if we take our signings into account 2 old 1 average 2 young average age of starting 11 is probs 26/27ish which is an age of promotion imo 1 young flair player would be nice as maturity isn't a major factor in flair

Really? What planet are you on?? Was always error prone, and now past it and injury prone too! Happy with all the other signings but this would be PJ's first mistake

I think we must have watched a different player, when exactly was he error prone in his first spell with us? And he did not make too many in that first season. I think he would be decent back up. Equally he is only training with us so this conversation may well be irrelevant.

Please do not sign him up as we have been down this road before and it did not work. Remember also, he left us despite being advised by Burley to stay and his career never blossomed as it should have. He clearly is not the man he was especially when you cannot get into the Sheff U side. He is probably rich now but he has wasted his playing career and I for one do not want him back. The last spell was disappointing and that is an unserstatement. Go and get Sott Loach if you want an Ipswich fan.

No thanks.

Couldn't even get into a relegated side's team.

last time he was here he made a few mistakes in a struggling side, this happens from time to time with goalkeepers, unfortunately a GK mistake gets punished in the harshest way and remembered. he did have a great season the season before that and lets not forget the WBA game where he was sublime. he could still have something to offer, but I believe in Fulop we have one of the best keepers in the division, I have faith in him.

Considering we've just parted company with arguably the best prospect this club has had since Darren Bent left (maybe even Kieran Dyer), AND for the sum of £8-12M,i'm slightly underwhelmed with the calibre of player we've been linked with this week..Bowyer,Boateng & now Wright (albeit the latter 2 are just training).

Don't want us to break the bank and chuck millions around willy-nilly,but was kinda hoping we'd be going in for people a little more of the Reo-Coker standard rather than everyone else's leftovers?..don't mind the odd freebie here and there but we need at least another 3 or 4 quality players if we're going to seriously make a play-off bid this year..Leicester (annoyingly) seem to be building a fine looking team.

Wrighty had his best spell in football with Webster as his coach thats no doubt anmd they have remained in touch with each other ever since so this was always going to happen. Admittedly error prone in his second spell with the club but I would take him back as Webby can get the best out of him.

To young for this squad he's only 33 barely out of nappies

Lightningboy, well said, couldnt agree more.
Pj in contrast to keane, likes to play a settled team, very few changes, which, imho is the way forward, but that approach is less likely with older players, older players cant play the same volume of games, their bodies do not recover as quickly and injuries do not heal as quickly when u get older. Yes we do need some experience, for sure, but please no more has beens.
And churchmans, take a look at leicester , that is a mouthwatering team, i envy the players they are signing. I am chuffed to bits with chopra, know very little about cresswell, but the rest are past their best, fact or not? COYB

At last a decent 'old' player : still potentially the best English goalie, and miles better than the 2 we've got. Let's hope his 'training' turns into a contract ala John Wark.

A past world class player who is now rather down on his previous high points. He is welcome to train with the lads.

It doesn't seem very likely

Would'nt be to bad if we signed him as second keeper to say loach but not as first choice keeper.Wish him all the best but there are much better out there (i think, maybe)

Scott Loach against RW - as many have mentioned..? No brainer...! Wright all day...! Loach is nothing compared to Wright....!

Lets hope he signs, and quickly displaces Flop in between the sticks.... Sell Flop asap.

I am getting so fed up with all these negatives about age, we need experience to get us out of this league, under keane I can't think of any good experienced players he ever managed to get in. if we sign Bowyer as reported he will provide some fight in midfield, something we have been severley lacking from the many don't care players I'm glad to see the back of!
Wright can be a class keeper and under Websters guidance could well be again, and at 33 he's in the prime years. Look at the keepers over his age performing consistently as if they were years younger Van der Sar (recently retired at 40, Friedel still going at 40 and Given who will make a top drawer number one as soon as he gets away from Man City)
And what about players like Scholes, Giggs, Bowyer last year, Phillips and Derry, remember how he was a vital part of QPR's promotion success at 34 (and we nearly signed him)
the fitness regimes are tough now and those that still have the ability and drive in their mid 30's will still provide vital roles for their respective sides. 35 is the new 30, most of them still have the ability and stamina at that age and still a couple of years left.
I for one would welcome an Ipswich team with Wright, Bowyer and Boeteng in it and hopefully you moaners will be silenced when those players have won us promotion.
Having said that none of them have actually signed for us yet.....So quit the moaning and get behind the team!
P.S. how many of the moaners are over 35? Or so bloody young they think us over 30's remeber the war?
COYB!!!!
