Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26

Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.

Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.

“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”

The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.

“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.

“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”

Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.

“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.

“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”

Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.

“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

Yeah tomisamos, souperjim's blog is maybe a little harsh on the new signings but he's spot on with the others.

Right now we need to go out and find ourselves the next Butcher,Mowbray or DeVos..easier said than done though.

Jewell certainly has the passion but maybe - as we're finding out - not quite the tactical know-how.

Like I said yesterday - BIG week ahead.

We're missing De Vos, we've missed him ever since he went, no one has stepped up to fill in those shoes, not even McAuley! That's the sort of Centre back we need, just another player won't fix the defence.

I like your posts. Loads of sense. However I believe PJ's position is now untenable. 12 goals conceded in 5 days tells a story. Recent results will have our players drawing their own conclusions, and their belief in the manager will be wavering. 50 years of watching football have taught me that when results go well it's down to the players but when things go badly it's the manager's fault. If. I had the time or inclination I might rant on about what I think is rotten in Team Ipswich. Frankly I can't be bothered. PJ I think has a bit of the honourable about him, I can see him walking any time soon.

Half of one the best defensive parings we ever had already works at the club.

Please, Mr Jewell, get Russell Osman in your office tomorrow morning and get him to train our defence how to play!

well pj ive seen some pretty poor games in my 39 years following my club but apart from duncan and keane that takes the biscult , we need two centre backs a right back or play peters another centre midfeild and another striker and one of them needs to be a leader to be captain, well this weeks performance in my opinion utter s##t

Just as an addendum to my earlier post, yes, these are dark and desperate times but we must keep the faith. I'll be there on Saturday. The management, if not the players, deserve our support. A strange statement I know. I remember the old Days when it was all about the players but these are times we live in.

So I am presuming that all those on here who blamed Keano for everything that was wrong at our club are happy now? You could hardly call this Keane's team now and the result is that we are even damn worse than before!!

We have turned into a total joke. League 1 here we come!

Excellent treasoned comments at this dire time. I think that PJ should be given more time although more urgency should have been given to getting the back four reinforced.
Our youngsters are going to make some mistakes...and will hopefully learn from them. I also believe that what really pisses supporters off is those players who are not giving 100% for 90 minutes.

A very happy Norwich City fan here. The start you've made you couldn't make it up it's brilliant. Some of you lot ain't got a clue the comment section on here is priceless keep up the moaning it's comedy gold. Oh you might find League One easier we done alright . Have a good season. We are premier league..... On the Ball city...

A wind-up from The Scum...fair enough and against my better judgement I'll take the bait. Firstly you jinxed your team...no sooner did you post this than Stoke equalised with a poorly defended goal. Also The Scum have an average of only 1 point per game versus our .75....whoopdedoo!

Anyway I wish your team good luck. Now piss off!

HOW I SEE IT POOR REFEREEING AND POOR LINESMAN .
3 OFFSIDES AND PENALTY OUTSIDE THE BOX.
2 SENDING OFFS WHICH WARRANTED YELLOW CARDS AT MOST.
FA SORT THESE DECISION MAKING PLANKS WHO RUN THESE GAMES THEY GET PAID TO BE FAIR AND ALOT OF PEOPLE WATCHED THIS GAME AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE SHOULD BE SACKED .
on another note we all wanted new blood we got it but simply not the right blood in most areas i watched the bristol city match and better of the play was city we just got lucky on the break.
When we go ahead we sit back and i see jewel yesterday say to guys push forward , 1 goal isnt enough they need to play full 90 minutes as if there life depends on it.
Enough said cmon sort leeds out !!!

Once again certain fans standing in the Peterborough game they know who they are, they once again showed their IQ of 12.2 as they started singing we want our money back which then continued to loyal supporters and then on to were going to win league one!!!! Don't understand them half the time , I was quite glad that one of them got taken out of the ground late on!!! IF U WANT TO PAY MONEY TO WATCH A FOOTBALL MATCH DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT THE SCORE IS UR THEIR TO SUPPORT UR TEAM!!!!!

to be honest i cant see how jewell could not see this coming, last year our best defender was macauley, best defensive midfielder was norris both were allowed to walk away, ok that might not have been jewells fault, but were not replaced other than the injury prone ingamarsden and an old bowyer then we have carlos edwards playing out of posistion, add to that releasing squad players like troy brown. then we have jewell wasting time trying to get unrelistic targets like upson and woodgate, we need defenders and quick i say sign up sol campbell and sonko plus a rb on short term contracts to get us out of this mess, then we can have more time to sort out more long term targets

Bigfatjoe2 Carlos Edwards is perfectly capable of playing right back he's calm on the ball chips in with 5 or 6 goals a season he may make some slip ups but doesn't everyone ........
NO RIGHT BACK IS NEEDED and as for Troy brown he shouldn't be at this club anyway

bigfatjoe2 - Both Sol Campbell and Sonko are looking for final payday just like Bowyer (Jury still out). We need pace at the back not just organisation. Can't think of many defenders though - Dawson at West Brom on loan as they owe us 1? Also think Bradley Wright Phillips would be a good partner for Chops. Good age, on form and has a physical presence so could help team ethos by defending corners and free kicks.

Still feeling sick and empty from yesterday now. Wonder how many of our players feel as bad as some of us fans do. Would've liked someone other than Stockdale to have said something today ie Leadbitter or Delaney!

i just think carlos is a bit week he should flying past players on the wing not trying to stop them himself the only reason i mention troy is why let players go when ur short in that department, if ur not replacing them

bleedingblue i do realise about campbell and sonko, but do we risk waiting for premier teams to loan us players, i do think campbell would be a beast at the back in this league, yes not much pace but positionly and in the air so strong also wouldnt be powderpuff in the tackle like the rest of defence, and would talk and organize , just hurting so much and want action and soon.

bfj2- I understand what you mean about hurting and needing action!I feel your pain! Jewell has money to spend and we should be looking at lower leagues for players like cressy. Gotta be more good players in these leagues and Scotland. I'd have one of the two but only as short term until Ivar's back and we have more cover. Do we have scouts at our club? Thought Romeo Zondervan did some in europe for us? Who found Bobby Petta and Martin Reuser and what are they doing now?

Whatever his shortcomings or failings, getting rid of Jewell right now could prove disasterous. What have decent manager would be jumping at the prospect of taking over our poisoned chalice of a team?

The way forward as I see it is to poach a couple of lower league players with potential and a passion and desire to play in the championship. Granted, good signings can't be miracled out of the air, and town is probably one of the least attractive prospects for an outbound player at the moment.

Easy as it is to go on and on about what Jewell should have done differently during the summer but what's done is done and the present and immediate future is all we should be concerned with. The next six games should all be about stabilisation and trying to get the team's spirit believe back up through the floor. I understand everyone's anger and desire to send a message but can't see how a boycott could help in anyway.

We're all in this together chaps, let's get behind the team.

yes it would be no good getting rid of him just feel defence should have sorted b4 the season started, i always thought you stop the goals going in first then sort out the attack

Another point here is the lack of games for the squad players who come in cold and lose confidence quickly.

Did you see Leeds take the game to the Hammers and should have won it? OMG Saturday will be horrible unless miracle signings happen.

I know we are waiting for premier defenders to become available after the transfer window closes but how about a dip into League 1 for a defender from clubs such as MK Dons. Lewington or Doumbe would be good targets to play alongside someone like Sol Campbell or a premier loanee. Would offering Lewington to be captain and the club a big fee be tempting?

At right back bringing forward the signing of Aljaž Struna would allow Edwards to move up to right midfield.

Being greedy I would chase Bullard offering him the equivalent of a transfer fee as a signing on fee to make up for our lower wage structure.

Welsh tractor boy---

I think anyone who has paid a lot of money to watch such a shambles has a divine right to criticise the team....and as for these 'idiots' are you also going to mention the constant singing and contibution to the atmosphere....every right to sing about a refund after that. At least their voice didnt die after the third goal, If you don't like to hear the singing, watch it at home!

Can't really add much that other people are saying. I don't think I have ever seen a team defend as bad as we are. Ainsley is not even close to being good enough to having a career at this level, Delaney is always a mistake waiting to happen and certainly cannot organise a defence. He got away with his limitations with a fellow centre half who could organise him (Macauley) and Smith just looks broken since his loan at Colchester last year. Ingarmarsson looks decent enough but will spend a lot of time injured I fear. Amazed that we have not looked at signing as right back as Edwards is caught out of position time and time again. If it is true a bid has come in for Leadbitter then please please accept it. It was bad enough last year but the fact that he is now the so called captain is a joke. I honestly cannot see what he brings to the team. After seeing JET for the first time in the friendly at Colchester I remarked to friends that he was going to be a very frustrating player as although he has bags of ability, it seems there will be many games where he doesn't apply it. Carson is another player who will not cut it at this level. Feel sorry for Chopra as he will score goals with decent service and feel sorry for the goalkeeper too. He must wonder what kind of outfit he has joined. Jewell needs to find a formation and stick to it. I actually had no problem with the 4-5-1 which he started the season with (and played with in the pre seasons) as with 2 wingers it can double up to 4-3-3. Changing the whole formation so soon in the season just looks desperate.
