Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26

Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.

Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.

“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”

The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.

“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.

“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”

Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.

“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.

“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”

Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.

“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

I think there are still 3 teams worse than us in this league. I can hope anyways!

PNE last season would have given our team now a good hiding.
Bad times to be a Town fan. Relegation form.

Any town fan that can sleep after that performance isn't a real fan

The players should be ashamed. Let everyone down today, they need to take a long hard look at themselves !!

i assure you i can sleep after any performance and sometimes during a performance................. 5th place this season we beat peterborough in the playoffs final 3-1 and go up to the boring 1st division' where only clubs with loads of money ever win anything and settle into a dreary few years struggling to get beyond mid table..

Good to hear from you Bobble. Hope its Barby weather for you down there.
Personally, I think if we can somehow get a draw from the Leeds game it will be an excellent result. We need to build a little confidence and not be "the team that always gets beat". At the moment- its not about whether we win,- its about how many goals we lose by. Getting thrashed by teams is becoming a habit (Northampton and Hull both deserved to beat us by more and lets be frank- Peterborough should have put double-figures past us). The Bristol City result now seems to be a freak result (which sometimes happens on the first game of the season).
For a long time now we have been in decline and I think the reaction here shows that ITFC fans are sick and tired of hearing the same excuses over and over again. Its time to act and invest some money.
(1) back-up Keeper in case Stockdale gets recalled
(2) A Real Right-Back (go to Liga Portuguesa and get someone from one of the top 6 clubs)
(3) 2 Centre-Backs (from AHYWHERE!!!) and send Smith and Ainsley out on-loan (IF ANYONE WILL TAKE THEM!!)
(4) Try to sign Bullard (unrealistic- but keep on trying)
(5) Bring in a quality left-winger to compete with Martin.
(6) Bring in a quality midfielder (of the Zoltan Gera ilk) - who can actually create something and doesn't just give up.
(7) Sell Leadbitter to Pompey (he obviously doesn't want to play for us anymore. The way he was walking around with his head down yesterday was truly infuriating)
(8) If we can't sign Bullard- bring in a player of the j.Savage Ilk (i.e. takes no prisoners- new captain).

The only players I would keep as regulars at the moment would be Stockdale, Cresswell, JET and Chopra. The rest of the team should be back-up at best.

The players "yesterday" were not fit to wear their shirts. Disgusting performance. Fans should have their money returned.

We are a long way from top 6.
Don't forget Ainsley. Should be sent back to Histon (but they don't want him).
Wish we could be in Prem but our team is the circus at mo and our back 2 are like clowns.
Shane O must come back into the reckoning. Never played badly for us and yet is on sidelines.

Even with 3 offsides and a dodgy pen, that was still a 3-1 away defeat and some school boy defending to boot. An absolute shocker. Nice conga by the way, looked good on the telly !!!

Michaeldownunder-
Carson played ok. I think he became more and more agitated as the game went on because of the woeful play of most of the rest of the team. Noticeably, he kept up the spirits of Stockdale who was under constant pressure and was pulling off unbelievable last ditch saves. That guy has got to be the next England Keeper- amazing. He died out as the 1st half went on and was replaced by (I believe) Smith (who was then gone in about 30 seconds). Certainly has a place in the Ipswich side but needs more support, its hardly his job as a youngster to gel the team. Think he will get even better when his mate, Lavery, joins the first team. In the right side will cause the opposition trouble. In this hopeless side he was largely ineffective as we couldn't get the ball out of our half. Don't know what the possession count was but we barely had the ball the entire 2nd half.

Fellow Ipswich supporters I'm calling for you all to boycot the Leeds game!

Tommy Smith btw was dreadful. He played for 30 seconds and produced a ridiculous challenge that was only ever going to get the red card.
He could still add something to our team, but needs some time on-loan elsewhere (it did Martin the world of good).
Ainsley- Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Don't want to swear on this forum but Oh dear. Sunday League defending. Delaney didn't help him and only seemed concerned with trying to manage his section of the pitch. Edwards? out of place at rb.

good luck Dobbie- I for one don't blame you a bit. Not sure at the minute if I'm a loyal suppoerter or a complete and utter mug. Struggling to see a way back from this one. Totally shell shocked.

Having slept on it i think the players have stopped playing for Jewell, except the 2 new guys who are class. That means one thing, Jewell has to go.

How ridculous a couple of heavy defeats and the posters are starting it again, pro & anti brigade, this will again turn into another long and boring slanging match, when we win (eventually) the the PJ supporters will state that their faith has been rewarded, when we lose the anti's will keep stating their opinions about what PJ should do, because of course they alone know what is right and where the club is going wrong.
I was not enamoured when PJ was appointed but so far I have liked his signings, apart from the injury prone Icelander, he is not like Magilton or Keane always putting the blame on somebody else.

Thanks for the info victorywillhappen and Erika Tractor
Delaney needs a good player along side him other wise he is just lost
What about Wayne Brown? has no club sign him on a month long deal
We must also have some one to sit infront of the back four, Kennedy or Hyam just to break up play and take to ball off the back four so we don't just hit a long ball every time out of defence.
Very glad I live in Australia as not many Ipswich fans over here and even less Norwich ones, Thank goodness
