Jewell: Offer in to Premier League Club
Jewell: Offer in to Premier League Club
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 11:02

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have made an offer for a Premier League defender. The Blues boss says the bid is for a potential permanent signing and not a loanee with Aston Villa’s Shane Lowry reported to have been watched in reserves action last night with a view to a loan move.

Jewell, who is desperate to add to his backline ahead of Saturday’s home game against Leeds, said: "We've been trying to get in more defenders since the end of last season. We've made enquiry after enquiry and it's been very frustrating but you have to be patient.

"An offer has gone in for a player last night. It's a new target and I'm waiting for his manager to get back to me this morning.

"It's an offer for a centre-half who plays for a Premier League club. It is dependent on them but I am hopeful."

Jewell also has further targets: “We are definitely a couple of centre-backs short, maybe we need someone to push Carlos at right-back, we need another midfielder and a forward thinking player too, whether that be a wide player or someone who can play through the middle.

“I’m aware we need to strengthen more than anybody, I see the players every day, but the key thing is that we are not wasteful with our money."

Icelandic veteran Ívar Ingimarsson will miss Saturday’s game with his thigh injury, while Tommy Smith is suspended for one match for his red card at Peterborough.

43 games left eh? We'll probably ship another couple of hundred goals in that time. Nah, only kidding. Rome wasn't built in a day and all that...

optimus_ryan21... that is the most sense i have heard on this site in a long time. Ipswich has always been about sticking with managers, we cannot just sack him 4 games into his first season with us.

pj will pull through given time, he knows we need a CB, but we need the right CB which will take time instead of rushing out and getting another delaney...

Why not enquire about Liam Fontaine he is wanting a move and still in prime years ?

Seriously think we should look at trying to re-sign David Wright from palace. He knows the club and most fans would agree he'd be a solid right-back. Pity we're too short of CBs at the moment otherwise we could have offered them Delaney as part of a player exchange deal!

On a separate note, let's get behind the team. I'm as angry, frustrated and anxious as any town fan at the moment, but the manager and team, such as it is, needs our backing. I sincerely believe that PJ is doing everything he can to sort out the defence, let's just hope that he can.

COYBs

PPS Not sure why I'm mentioning this but here's one for any of you psychics out there. I had a dream premonition last night of Saturday's result being a no score draw. Sad to say I'd happily take a result like that atm.

Spot on blueboy and wicked I care what others think. You can hear Graysons team talk now..
" this bunch have conceded 12 in the last two games and defend like clowns, go out and fill your boots"
or words to that effect.
Remember the Cobblers put 3 past us.
It may only be two games but the signs are not good. With Leeds, Blackpool, Boro, West Ham, Brighton and cardiff to follow...........

I too have followed Town four in excess of four decades and yes there have been lows but come on we have been very poor in defence for three seasons now and despite all the spin and drivel we are weaker now (defensively)than at any time in those three seasons.
I am sick of all the headlines such as this.
Its laughable...how many other managers do their business this way?
We dont want all these words, some action would be nice.

I'd add to that list a solid number two goalkeeper and a captain to replace quiet man Leadbitter. The centre backs are an urgent priority, but we need a right-back too as we have since Keane let David Wright leave on a free transfer (at the same time as Rosenior was let go, who is now a regular for Hull).

Ignoring frees, loans and wages, Magilton spent around £8M on fees and Keane spent over £10M, but Jewell has only spent £3M thus far. We've lost McAuley, Norris and Wickham, the latter for £8.1M. Is it time to admit the money is not there for Jewell to spend in contradiction to what fans were told?

I'm in the positive camp with optimus_ryan21, WickedBlue, victorywilhappen et al

We know where the handful of problems are, we are trying to buy the right players, we have some money to spend and we are only a few games into the season with a manager who has the right experience and is well liked in the game.

Most of the players PJ has brought in are good signing and we are building a team with loads of potential for this season and next.

I too think we will have the last laugh

Jesus, give the guy a break! I know I was hurting after the Peterborough debacle, but I'm sure it pales into insignificance compared to poor old PJ. We don't any god given right to players joining us, neither are we simply going to walk into the premier league. Football is tough and becoming increasingly more cut throat. I believe that we still have a club to be proud of. An owner that has chosen to stay out of the limelight but is financially supporting us. A chief executive who began very shakily but is starting to earn his money and an experienced manager that is down to earth and constantly trying to improve the team. Add a group of players some of whom will come good and some will fall by the wayside. I'm fed up of reading conspiracy theorist comments on this site from so called fans accusing the owner of not investing enough or a chief exec failing to deliver, or a manager who doesn't know what he is doing. Man up! Sometimes there are lows but that is the beauty of being an itfc supporter, it makes the highs all the sweeter! If it's too difficult for you join the droves of soulless supporters heading to Old Trafford, where being a fan is easier. PJ is working hard to get the right players in and I believe him. I look forward to seeing who our next signing might be and I look forward to seeing the confidence of players like Smith and Ainsley being restored, young footballers who are taking a battering at the moment. Bit of unity amongst the town support please!

I shudder to make the comaprison, but Norwich started thier season two years ago with exactly the same result against Colchester, and look where they are now. This is a terrible start to the season, but no more than that. Once PJ has finished bringing in players he will have to urgently gel what we have got into a functional team, if he can do it we'll be fine.

Glad to see that there are some sensible voices on this site and not just the idiot doom-mongers. Whilst it is massively disappointing that PJ hasn't brought in better defenders, his track record of purchases is pretty good and I'm confident that he'll get in some quality replacements. Unfortunately he inherited a shocking team from Keane, with only Norris, Mac and Wickham of any true quality, and they went through no fault of Jewells. This is a massive overhaul and pj is getting there.

Why is everyone panicing about Leeds so much they only have one more point than us and have conceded the second most after us should be a free scoring game !!
And calling for Jewells head is ridiculous when the only game his centre back signing has played this year we looked very good at the back and kept a certain Mr Maynard quiet all afternoon a job other teams have not managed .Jewell cannot help injuries or the fact that the premiership have not finalised their own squads yet to release others .
I would say Sven is under more pressure spending all that money and they are only just above us ,who are apparantly the worse side ever !
Long season and Jewell will have us in better shape at the end than recent managers

Spot on Optimus, nice to hear from someone with more than one brain cell. If you look at the ratings for saturday's game the worst marks were all for Keane signings not Jewell's.
