Town right-back Carlos Edwards is taking steps to make amends with the young supporters he believes he may have let down last month.

Edwards narrowly avoided a prison term when he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and received a 12-week prison sentence — suspended for 12 months — along with a £2,500 fine and a further 18-month ban on top of the year-long disqualification imposed in March.

The Trinidad & Tobago international’s punishment also included 200 hours of community service, which has seen him embark on a round of high school visits.

Edwards, 32, said: “I’m a role model to some of the pupils and I let them down a bit.

“We all make mistakes in life and hopefully we learn from them — that’s what I am telling the kids.

“I’m not going in there to make excuses. It was silly of me to do what I did and it has cost me more than a fine

“My job now is to make sure the kids get the message that when you know something is wrong you shouldn’t do it.

“I’m a dad and it is always nice to interact with kids. I hope I can help to give them a sense of belief in themselves and to go on and achieve things in their lives.

“They can ask me anything. As far as I am concerned there are no silly questions. Every question is a good question that will get an honest answer.”
