Jewell Was Almost Resigned to Defeat
Jewell Was Almost Resigned to Defeat
Monday, 12th Dec 2011 08:32

Town boss Paul Jewell joked that he was already composing his letter of resignation when his side were 2-0 down to Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday. However, before he’d had time to put pen to paper his side had staged a remarkable turnaround to beat the Tykes 5-3.

Jewell says he was consulting his staff on spellings with his team looking well on the way to their eighth successive defeat: “I was asking Hutch how you spell ‘yours sincerely’,” quipped the Blues manager after the game.

“But there’s no point in me worrying about my own position. I’ve had nothing but support from Marcus Evans and it’s been a tough time. There are not many owners who tell you to keep going when you’ve lost seven on the run.

“All I can do is my best, there’s no point in me worrying about it. It’s not a situation that I’ve liked, it’s been horrible for everybody connected with the club and I understand when you lose seven matches on the bounce, you’re going to be under pressure.

“In the dressing room there’s just a huge feeling of relief. It’s been a traumatic time for everyone at the club.

“At least we can watch Match of the Day and then try and stay up a bit later for the Football League Show.”

He says he told his players to have faith in their own abilities during the half-time break: “All you’ve got to do is keep going, believe in yourself. I believe in myself and the players did in the second half.

“We’re still a long way from the finished article, it’s not going to happen overnight. I think some people think it can, but it certainly can’t.

“I just told them to believe in themselves. Our throw-ins were sloppy, we turned our backs on the play, we knocked off and didn’t do the things that people take for granted. The top players do them brilliantly.

“Our concentration at times is poor. We concentrated more in the second half and obviously the goal gave us a lift. I said the next goal is vital, we got it and from then on I thought we looked dangerous.”

Jewell is in no doubt why his side find themselves at the wrong end of the table: “We’ve conceded so many goals as a team defensively, which is why we are where we are.

“I don’t think we lack scoring goals, I think we’ve scored a decent amount of goals but we’ve conceded far too many and the manner in which we concede them has been killing us.

“If we continue to do that we’re still going to struggle, but the second half performance was one from a team which looked confident, whereas in the first we looked bereft of confidence.”

He says he’s never experienced a comeback to match Saturday’s: “I don’t think so, certainly not five goals in the second half.

“I said to them at half-time that I’ve been in dressing rooms where at 2-0 down we believe we’re going to win. At Bradford and Wigan we had teams which at 2-0 down were never beaten.

“I said to them, ‘you can do it, look around you, look at the players next to you, you’ve got to do it’.”

While I was watching the first half on Sky, I said to the missus, if we're 2 goals down at half time, I'll switch it off and cook the tea. We were, and I did. I suspect that I am the reason for towns bad run of form. I think that I seem to have some sort of hoodoo on them. I do wonder if anyone actually logged a prediction of 3-5.

Those 'fans' you slagged the team off big time during the first half on the TWTD forum

Shame on you.

It's much better to have a laugh about these things rather that grow a beard and go into a sulk. Well done Paul. A thoroughly nice chap.

Lets hope EVERYONE gets behind Paul and the team now. Of coures the last few weeks have not been a great time to say "I Support Ipswich" but the lads showed what they can do in the second half. Just think we need to get behind them now !!! C.O.Y.B !!!!!!!!!!

I so desperately wanted Paul Jewell to turn this around but at half-time it really did not seem possible. Well done to all of you for excelling beyond belief in the sencond half and I have a feeling this could be a significant turning point for the gaffer and Ipswich Town football club!

Listened on radio and switched off at half-time.

That'll teach me.

It's a funny ol' game... ..as someone once said.

Glad he didn't because I think he's the man long term todo the job, however the buck does stop with the manager and if the bad run had continued past 10 games it may be a different story.
What we need to do now is to get behind the team, and hopefully the belief will carry us forward.
And what PJ needs to do is get us a RB, Edwards is so shaky defensively as he's really RW not RB.
Another CB (hopefully Collins will sign permanently too) as Sonko is great in the air but does look a bit dodgy at times (although could be lack of confidence after injuries)
A young, energetic midfielder, because the legs we have in midfield are tiring by 70-80 mins so they need a bit of help.
Get all this sorted in the new year and you won't have to worry about resignations for a long time!!!
COYB!!!!

This win ranks alongside the 3-2 win from 2 down against Sheffield Utd for me, Pablo had been sent off and we looked down and out in that game too.Warnock still talks about it too.Be great if we can get out of the blocks on Sat, start on Sat as we started the 2nd half at Barnsley, what a lift that would give the Portman Rd faithfull.

True. I mean 7 defeats, 2-0 down at HT, an insane amount of goals being conceded and some people think THAT justifies being negative???

I'm a real fan, even if we went down to league 2 I'd still say the manager and players are all excellent. Those fake fans don't get it, if you critise the players or managers you're a fake fan.

They're not real fans like me.

This reminds me of the Robson Cobbold era, Cobbold stayed out of the way and let Robson get on with it, history repeating, i hope so

Frase, Point is the lads had crossed the white line and it was then time to support the team whatever you think about the players or manager not publically slag them off.

At the very least, debate the issues later, but support the team when they're playing man

brilliant win admittedly, we did concede three goals again however!....Derby game will be interesting, another false dawn or a start of a winning run, the latter I sincerely hope but I do agree with Newboy, I didn't believe he was the man for the job when he arrived last year and I still don't..... but he is our manager at the moment..... so well done for Saturday ...but the table still doesn't lie!

Brilliant 2nd half performance..shows our best form of defence is attack, attack, attack.

PJ,if you're still here in january, please go out and sign a right-back though!!!..Edwards is great going forwards but a complete liability at the back.

*As for the football league show - it's an absolute joke - we were the game of the day and they stick us on last - 12.30 am - pathetic!

Well done boys. I have to admit we were doomed at half-time. Unbelievable turn-around...well done ALL.

Nearly as good as the time we came from 3-0 down at Barnsley and got three in injury time.

Special mention for the few hundred hearty souls who braved a cold rainy night in Barnsley...Great support and

@Lightningboy

It's probably to give the editors of the program more time as it was a 5:20 kick off.. Practical thinking might work for you in future!

Agreed Lightningboy on the Edwards issue and at times Sonko isn't far behind (great in the air, a bit dodge on the ground, seems to let people get in behind too easily, if they beat him he doesn't seem to be able to confidently deal with it) so we need a new right footed CB as well as most of our problems seem to come in from our right, opposition teams know this and will target. Hopefully Collins will sign on a permament deal and that's the left side of defence (fairly) secure.
