Town Make Move for Leicester's St Ledger
Town Make Move for Leicester's St Ledger

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that Leicester central defender Sean St Ledger is one of the two signings he is hoping to make before the Blues face Birmingham at St Andrew’s next Wednesday. Jewell has already approached the Foxes regarding St Ledger, who he targeted when he was at Preston last January, again in the summer and with whom the Blues were linked yesterday.

Jewell said: “I’ve spoken to Leicester about Sean St Ledger’s availability. He is someone we’re interested in and are trying to pursue.

“There are a few clubs in for him, one from Serie A. Whether we can get Sean to come here remains to be seen.

“Leicester have said they’ll be prepared to do something and we’re still talking to them to see if we can get the lad to come here.”

The Town boss, who is looking to take the 27-year-old on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal with no fee yet agreed between the clubs, is hoping to speak to the player today: “I’ve spoken with Nigel Pearson, I’ve spoken to assistant manager Steve Walsh and I’ve spoken to the agent to see if he would be interested.

“He said he’d got a bit of interest from a lot of clubs in the Championship and one in Italy. I’m hoping that I can speak to Leicester and have a chat with the player today.”

St Ledger, who is 5ft 11in tall, was recently transfer-listed by Leicester following a row with Pearson after he was omitted from their side taking on the Blues on Boxing Day.

The Birmingham-born defender only signed a three-year deal at Leicester in the summer after making a £1.2 million move from Preston, having started his career with Peterborough and having had a loan spell at Middlesbrough during his five years at Deepdale.

St Ledger, who has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring two goals, has subsequently made only 10 starts and two substitute appearances for the Foxes, leading to his fall-out with Pearson.

Meanwhile, Jewell dismissed the recent link with Newcastle veteran Alan Smith and rumours claiming Crystal Palace keeper Julian Speroni and Millwall midfielder James Henry were Blues targets, although he admitted that the latter had previously been on his radar: “He was early in the season, but he isn’t now.”

Not for me and another loan signing. Michael Morrison of Charlton (23) and born in BSE is the type of player and the right age we should be looking to bring in.

This type of player will not cost the earth and should have the desire. He is also championship quality and with the right coaching can help form the spine of the team, especially with likes of Sonko around.

Let's look to Divs 1&2 for inspiration. Also there should be plenty of quality in the Dutch & Belgium leagues that will not cost the earth. Is it me or is there a smack of desperation, bit like looking in the bookies come the last race of the day when the vast majority are looking for a big win to break even!

How about just building a team. Take not of what Soton and dear I say it Naaarwich have done, dropped a league, built a team come back a lot lot stronger and gone straight through to the premiership. We really do need to put a team together, let them grow as a team and then move forward....

thoughts anyone?

richnblue - dropping down doesn't bare thinking about - NO guarantee at all that we would rebuild and come back up - look at a few others who have struggled BIG TIME to do just that.

Dropping a league wouldn't work in a literal sense, but I get the idea behind 'richnblue' thoughts. Teams that were forced to go through a re-building process due to relegation have come back much stronger. Lets do that - but minus the relegation bit! As 'h32' states, not everyone makes it back up afterwards.

The current team's poor showing and standing and, dare I say it, negative feedback by a lot of fans, will all go against us whilst we try and achieve what we all wish for........

You need to watch some dutch and Belgian league football. Its much much slower than championship, most of the better players are in other leagues already. Twenty or thirty years ago was easier to get good people that way. Not so much now. . . . Probably get one good one who might cut it from every ten you tried!

I'm open minded about this guy. Let's be honest he can't be much worse than the panic-stricken headless chickens we have at the moment (excluding Sonko of course!)
To those saying he didn't stop Preston going down...there are actually 10 other players in any team. And he also played in the playoffs with them. So I don't really understand that argument!
