Town Make Move for Leicester's St Ledger
Town Make Move for Leicester's St Ledger
Thursday, 5th Jan 2012 14:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that Leicester central defender Sean St Ledger is one of the two signings he is hoping to make before the Blues face Birmingham at St Andrew’s next Wednesday. Jewell has already approached the Foxes regarding St Ledger, who he targeted when he was at Preston last January, again in the summer and with whom the Blues were linked yesterday.

Jewell said: “I’ve spoken to Leicester about Sean St Ledger’s availability. He is someone we’re interested in and are trying to pursue.

“There are a few clubs in for him, one from Serie A. Whether we can get Sean to come here remains to be seen.

“Leicester have said they’ll be prepared to do something and we’re still talking to them to see if we can get the lad to come here.”

The Town boss, who is looking to take the 27-year-old on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal with no fee yet agreed between the clubs, is hoping to speak to the player today: “I’ve spoken with Nigel Pearson, I’ve spoken to assistant manager Steve Walsh and I’ve spoken to the agent to see if he would be interested.

“He said he’d got a bit of interest from a lot of clubs in the Championship and one in Italy. I’m hoping that I can speak to Leicester and have a chat with the player today.”

St Ledger, who is 5ft 11in tall, was recently transfer-listed by Leicester following a row with Pearson after he was omitted from their side taking on the Blues on Boxing Day.

The Birmingham-born defender only signed a three-year deal at Leicester in the summer after making a £1.2 million move from Preston, having started his career with Peterborough and having had a loan spell at Middlesbrough during his five years at Deepdale.

St Ledger, who has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring two goals, has subsequently made only 10 starts and two substitute appearances for the Foxes, leading to his fall-out with Pearson.

Meanwhile, Jewell dismissed the recent link with Newcastle veteran Alan Smith and rumours claiming Crystal Palace keeper Julian Speroni and Millwall midfielder James Henry were Blues targets, although he admitted that the latter had previously been on his radar: “He was early in the season, but he isn’t now.”

A right sided defender, surely a left sided defender is more of a priority at the min to play along side Sonklo unless Jewell has 2 central defenders lined up this Month! I work with a Middlesbrough fan who reckons he was calamitous when we was on loan there and apparently we should avoid at all costs! Willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt though as surely he cant be any worse then what we have!

Why on initial loan......... Why not just get the wallet out and buy him. He not a bad defender he just has't had the chance and as for falling out with manager there os always a player that will fall out with manager in any team whether its first team starts, wges etc. No more loan signings please unless its necessary.

DutchTownFan: That is exactly what I suspect. Wasn't the Keith Andrews loan one those with a view to a permanent signing. Thats looking unlikely now.

Honestly, with even a half decent defender we'd be mid-table EASILY. St. Ledger more than fits the bill.

Not my cup of tea as too small and very slow but can do no worse than what he have Sonko excepted.

Left Peterborough because of a poor attitude and talking to posh fans said he was a very average player.
Now problems at Leicester dont think he will make much of a difference at the back, Collins is far better and we still leaked goals but better than Delaney

My main concern is that we have leaked goals all season and that was with our better loan players Andrews and Collins who have now gone.

In my opinion this will make little difference given its the same management team, tactics and training.

Talk of new players takes the heat off jewell and clegg but in all honesty will this make a difference. He has already brought in loads and look where we are.

Huge games this month with all of them against teams in the top half. If we play like we did against forest we are in trouble.

I don't think its the tools we have its the way they are being implemented.

Back in for old targets? What has PJ been doing for the past few months. Been poor at Leicester - sulks far too easily - would be a poor signing.

If he's small then maybe it isn't too bad as players like Delaney get turned with ease. Sonko alongside him then we'll be alright. Still need another defender though because of Sonko's injuries.

In a word: nooooooooooooooo ! Overrated poor defender, not good enough for the fellow Championship side..... his last 2 years have been bad

Agree with previous post....we have good players but no coaching, tactics or cohesion on the pitch. Let's hope he has no points on his licence, not on the run from the bookies and he could be a good signing!

Would involve a big fee and big wages - What would this get us?

Would prefer we looked further down the ladder at someone on their way up, rather than someone expensive whose career appears to have stagnated a little. McFadzean (Crawley) perhaps?

Clegg might not have time to sort a deal out for him as he may be busy with his day job painting postman road lets hope he paints better than running our beloved ipswich town football club

At this moment in time we need some sort of experienced centre half as, bluntly, it isn't working at present. I agree we need more youth (either from our ranks or bought from elsewhere) but I fear neither would be advisable to throw into the side right now - we need a solid pro to see us through to the season's end as, lets face it, we're in a relegation scrap.

In that respect I don't see St Ledger being a bad signing to have alongside our current best central defender, Sonko. I'm never a real fan of loan signings with the threat they'll get 'poached' if they do well here. But, however, in this case I think a loan deal is perfect. That way we get our experienced defender we need, hopefully stay in the league, and can then buy/develop youth ready for inclusion next year...

Is that so daft?

Ok Jas which available centre half would you like to see?

why cant we just get a load of cheap donkeys from abroad who would jump and skip at the chance of playing in england. at least we could all make fun of their names and enjoy the rest of the season. I dont like the look of any of the aforementioned players. maybe some dutch guys with nice hair.
