Jewell: Same Old Story
Jewell: Same Old Story
Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 18:05

Town manager Paul Jewell was again left frustrated by his side’s tendency to concede bad goals as the Blues lost 3-1 at Hull City in the FA Cup.

Jewell said: “It’s the same old story. The first two goals were just bad goals, then we got ourselves back in the game with a bit of a fightback in the second half, have two good opportunities to equalise, and then the third Hull goal, you have to see it to believe it.

“That sums us up and that’s why we are where we are - because of that calamitous defending. We give teams goal starts every week.

“Even when we beat Barnsley we had to come back from 2-0 down. You’ve seen the goals, if you see goals like that at a lot lower standard league than this you’d be scratching your head.”

He says his team need to show their second half spirit for entire games: “We showed character in the second half, but why don’t we show that all game?

“In the first 10 minutes we started OK, then one long ball, more often than not, puts us on the back foot. We just can’t defend or are not defending individually or as a group.

“It’s almost as if they take in turn to make a rick. They’re not even basic errors. I don’t know how the second goal goes in. On the first goal we’re trying to get Damien Delaney off because he was injured and we couldn’t get the ball out of play.

“Any strength test we lose, any race we’re losing, and it was the same against Forest and against Reading. When it becomes nitty-gritty we don’t win enough battles.”

“To a certain extent it’s psychological," he added. "We know confidence is at a low. We showed in the second half that we’ve got a bit about us, but we show it for 45 minutes or 44 minutes, which isn’t enough. We’ve got to show it over the whole game, from the first whistle to the last whistle, however long the game is.

“It’s not just today. We are why where we are in the league because of defensive errors. Everyone seems to take a turn at having one."

Jewell confirmed that Delaney’s injury was to his foot which recently had a screw inserted into it with the Blues now down to two fit senior centre-halves, Ibrahima Sonko and Tommy Smith: “It looks like his foot. We were trying to get the ball out of play, but it didn’t quite happen.

"Every goal should have been avoided. I know every manager says that, but the manner in which we leak goals is unbelievable.”

Hull caretaker-boss Nicky Barmby, who is set to be confirmed in the position full-time on Monday, was delighted to go into round four: “I’m very pleased we got the win. In the first half we played some good stuff and I was pleased that we went in 2-0 up at half-time because we knew that Ipswich would come at us as they had nothing to lose, especially in the cup at 2-0 down.

“We saw them against Barnsley when they reversed that scoreline and ended up winning, so we knew they were a dangerous side.

“We didn’t really get our football going in the second half until the final 10 or 15 minutes but we’re well pleased that we scored three goals at home, so all in all it’s a good day for us.”

The point is Roy was sacked. So why is PJ still here? Also, league cup: we were actually in the semi finals this time last year - whilst Roy was not in charge for the FA cup. No, Roy did not lose 10 out of 13 nor conceed anywhere near as many goals! He also did not sign all injury prone has been freebies. Of course his signings were not great - yet, rather than rely on his own, PJ is still picking many of Roys! Finally, why after a year keep talking about Roy - he has GONE. This is now PJ's team and we are worse off. The buck, as it did with Roy, stops with PJ.

Garv - fair point. But I simply can not see why he signed Ellington in the first place - terrible goal scoring record! Like Ingimarsson it was a poor signing.

let's not forget that the support from you & others kept Keane in his job for far too long & led to the shambles that PJ took over.
Having said that PJs poor signings & his persistence with the utterly useless Leadbitter ( one of Keane's typical wastes of money) means that his time is surely over.

The poll on this site says 43% don't want a change of manager! what the hell!!
What excuses can these people make? that it's the players fault (a large percentage he bought in and trains).
A year down the line and he hasn't a clue what his best line up is and now it's more of leaving out players of the starting 11 by default (the default they are consistantly under performing i.e. Bullard, Chopra, Bowyer, Ellington) or he's putting players back in he's almost forgotten about or put out on loan ( i.e. Hyam, Drury, Priskin). In all honesty he should put his hands up and say he doesn't know what he's doing at the moment.
A new manager in now is a must, he won't be any worse.

are_these_the_days - again you are mistaken. After the 4-1 norwich defeat I admitted Roy was not the man for the job AND accepted that he was rightly sacked. Then we get PJ - a man who delievered a 5-1 defeat at HOME to Norwich by playing one up front! At least when we lost 4-1 it was with 10 men!! Agree with you though - PJ has to go. Of course he was a poor appointment after Roy's rightful dismissal.

PJ has been here a year now - so this has nothing to do with Roy, Jim or Joe anymore.

Sick to the back teeth of listening to the same old crap, spouted by the same bunch of know nothings time and time again on this site. We have no defenders, we are trying to buy defenders, shut your mouths and give your tiny brains the chance to engage and understand!

If Jewell had simply gone into the market and bought average defenders to fill the gap, you'd all call for him to be sacked and moaning about his poor transfer dealings. What he is actually doing, is trying to secure quality players, that are better than those we currently possess, but there is a shortage of centre halves, it's as simple as that. This is going to take time to sort out and we're lucky that Jewell has managed to pull off some great loans, like Danny Collins, without whom, I suspect we would already be in a relegation spot.

Mr jewell , you said that you would not need to be sacked as you would do what is best for ipswich town. The best is to admit you are out of depth and walk.

10th game this season we have let in 3 or more. For those who want to give him more time get real, he will take us in to league 1.

If he doesn't walk me has to admit he has got it wrong again.

Lets be honest we probably need the whole team in the defensive line before we keep a clean sheet

What ever the rights and wrongs, after the Keane debacle we most needed a steady pair of hands to take charge of Ipswich. Unfortunately, like or loathe PJ that is not what we have it appears. Everyone can see the problems. PJ is paid to provide the solutions. If he ever had a plan, it is unclear what it is or was. Frankly it is very difficult to see what expertise we - well ME - is paying for. I'm feeling we'd better off being relegated so long as we can jettison all the big wage earners and build from the bottom. Confidence needs to be restored and that comes best playing at the right level. The players we have at present have proved they are apparently are not good enough for this level.

Best to get knocked out of these minor competitions at an early stage, can now concentrate on getting relegated.

It's now starting to get really interesting. Jewelio isn't going to be sacked and he will spend a bit more on some panic buys.

But just how bad is going to get before he is forcibly removed from Portman Road?

PS How about paying off our top quality coaching staff, Hutchings and McCarthy?

Karlosfandangal added 19:55 - Jan 7
I am guessing that the 2 we are signing before Wednesday are both Central Defenders as we only have 2 fit centre backs.
Ingarmarsson has left so we now only have Smith and Sonko at the back

I would ordinarily weigh in on the side of common sense, and say 'let's give the manager a chance, let's be realistic and look to the future, not expect miracles'.
However, all of PJ's comments are reminiscent of his post match interviews when he lead Derby. And we all know how that went.
Realistically though, who can they get in who will not get the same grief when a poor run starts?

Pity that some of PJ's summer signings have not worked out so far this season. Thought the signing of Ingimarsson was worth a try even though Reading let him go. Remember how excited we were over the signings of Chopra & Bullard? We cannot blame the manager. And it must be very, very difficult to attract players here as we are so out on a limb geographically. I read that Sean St. Ledger won't come here. And whatever PJ does in training goes wrong in matches with individual errors being made. Why cannot we play all the time as we played against Barnsley in the second half?
