Jewell: Same Old Story
Jewell: Same Old Story
Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 18:05

Town manager Paul Jewell was again left frustrated by his side’s tendency to concede bad goals as the Blues lost 3-1 at Hull City in the FA Cup.

Jewell said: “It’s the same old story. The first two goals were just bad goals, then we got ourselves back in the game with a bit of a fightback in the second half, have two good opportunities to equalise, and then the third Hull goal, you have to see it to believe it.

“That sums us up and that’s why we are where we are - because of that calamitous defending. We give teams goal starts every week.

“Even when we beat Barnsley we had to come back from 2-0 down. You’ve seen the goals, if you see goals like that at a lot lower standard league than this you’d be scratching your head.”

He says his team need to show their second half spirit for entire games: “We showed character in the second half, but why don’t we show that all game?

“In the first 10 minutes we started OK, then one long ball, more often than not, puts us on the back foot. We just can’t defend or are not defending individually or as a group.

“It’s almost as if they take in turn to make a rick. They’re not even basic errors. I don’t know how the second goal goes in. On the first goal we’re trying to get Damien Delaney off because he was injured and we couldn’t get the ball out of play.

“Any strength test we lose, any race we’re losing, and it was the same against Forest and against Reading. When it becomes nitty-gritty we don’t win enough battles.”

“To a certain extent it’s psychological," he added. "We know confidence is at a low. We showed in the second half that we’ve got a bit about us, but we show it for 45 minutes or 44 minutes, which isn’t enough. We’ve got to show it over the whole game, from the first whistle to the last whistle, however long the game is.

“It’s not just today. We are why where we are in the league because of defensive errors. Everyone seems to take a turn at having one."

Jewell confirmed that Delaney’s injury was to his foot which recently had a screw inserted into it with the Blues now down to two fit senior centre-halves, Ibrahima Sonko and Tommy Smith: “It looks like his foot. We were trying to get the ball out of play, but it didn’t quite happen.

"Every goal should have been avoided. I know every manager says that, but the manner in which we leak goals is unbelievable.”

Hull caretaker-boss Nicky Barmby, who is set to be confirmed in the position full-time on Monday, was delighted to go into round four: “I’m very pleased we got the win. In the first half we played some good stuff and I was pleased that we went in 2-0 up at half-time because we knew that Ipswich would come at us as they had nothing to lose, especially in the cup at 2-0 down.

“We saw them against Barnsley when they reversed that scoreline and ended up winning, so we knew they were a dangerous side.

“We didn’t really get our football going in the second half until the final 10 or 15 minutes but we’re well pleased that we scored three goals at home, so all in all it’s a good day for us.”

jas, Scotland barely ever played for Keane and when he did everybody slated him, he's only still here because of Jewell and Chopra admitted he was close to signing last year under Keane.

As for the rest of your post. I agree with you that those figures don't really lie. We can't escape the poor run under Jewell anymore than we can escape the poor run of the last five years. Jewell hasn't started this, he may have exacerbated things but he is another product of a board which clearly does not care for this club. Evans ought to do the honourable thing and sell this club to someone who won't be afraid to speak to their fans and stand up for their club. Evans doesn't do it, because he doesn't care.

Jewell may go, but it won't stop this poor run of form, it won't change anything. Irrespective of Jewell's ability to do the job, I've lost all faith in Evans ability to pick anyone better or spend his money on anything worthwhile. At least Jewell looks like he's trying, even if most of what he's tried has been poor.

I always read this site especially after a dearest so regularly this season.
The issue is not Mr Jewell Mr Clegg Mr Keane it's the lack of any serious spend that's necessary to overhaul the past few seasons squad. We not privvy to the hidden finances but simplistically Even with stage payments why have we no Wickham and Walters cica 10m to spend this is what is required.
I obviously respect our owner he is obviously in it for a good reason but he is no shiek

Both Keane and Jewell are to blame! Roy for getting us into this mess and PJ's inability to get us out of it. Here's a team of players who were let go for various reasons during the last two years

Fulop
D Wright, McCauley, Bruce, O'Conner
Walters, Norris, Trotter, Civelli
Stead, Rhodes

Subs, Murphy, Eastman, Haynes, Garvan, Lisie

O'Conner is still with us - but not for much longer.

That team would beat anything PJ could put out. What a waste of time PJ and Keane have been at our club!

How much closer are we now to 'the tipping point' Mr Clegg?

Can we all just please spell lose properly. It's lose not loose. Although defensively we are as loose as Rooney's ex.

ME/SC touted PJ as a manger with experience at Championship level. Part of that experience was dealing in the transfer market. Granted not all of PJ's signings have proven to be disappointments (Cresswell is a good example), but his track record is generally poor. He better get it right this time around or else those wolves will be having a feeding frenzy, and soon.

Same old story, same old excuses. I also do wonder what goes on in training, but more to the point-can PJ rescue the shot morale? I don't think he can. I'd like to stick by him, but if he's lost the morale of the team how can the players possibly take on what goes on in training and team talks? He's lost this group of players!

At what point is he going to accept that his coaching staff are not up to the job ? There were at least 4 of them out there during the warm up, surely one of them has some idea how to defend. The first goal would have been embarassing for a junior side, their player pinned in by his own corner flag by two of ours and still he manages to clear the ball upfield.
I like many others have unfortunately been watching second tier football for long enough now to recognise a team heading for relegation and we have league 1 written all over us. Very sad times.

Well that was a great day for Hull. They were able to give 7 of their reserves a run out and scored 3 times after 307 minutes of not scoring.
How are we going to get out of this mess? At the risk of stating the obvious, we must stop the incessant mistakes at both ends of the pitch. We need to instil a sense of pride throughout the club including the supporters. This won't happen overnight but a 100% fully committed effort on the field would be a start.
We need to prioritise to achieve the right balance of experience and youth without over reliance on loan players. Start by building a srong spine i.e. GK, at least one strong CB, at least one strong central midfielder and a striker (can Chopra be salvaged?) who can all be relied upon consistently. Then we need to start rebuilding the rest of the defence including another centre back. Over time we need a good RB and LB with the objective of being able to move Edwards (if he stays) and Cresswell forward.
Unless we have a good replacement ready, we should probably give PJ another chance since it would be costly and time consuming to get a replacement in and up to speed. We should also evaluate whether his henchman are adding value because PJ obviously needs some help. Meanwhile, let's put appropriate funding and energy into our academy so that we can develop many of our own players.
Do ME and SC really have arealistic plan and strategy for the future? If so they should consider sharing it with PJ the supporters so we can get behind them.
This is the first day of the rest of the season so let's start now!

Godd point made by PSGBlue. We have had such a turnaround of players and still we have no stability or long term prospects. Bad times and I'm starting to fear the worst.

I went today
A few points
We have conceded 3 again with our first choice back 5.

Jewell moans about the players publicly again- I have not heard him once mention how hard they are working on the training ground to rectify the mistakes that keep on occuring. I wonder if they work on anything.

Carlos Edwards had a good game - we are chasing the game with 1 minute to go, Edwards makes a mistake they score and Jewell criticises him whats the point?- Is this really motivating Edwards (who is clearly not a right back) to play well (not get Bullarsd flu) on Wednesday.

People say that it is hard to attract players due to loaction- Norwich manage it, Burley managed it paying less than we can now- its only an issue now because Jewell mentioned it a few months ago.

I really think Jewell will take us down - the next few weeks are crucial - 2 good centre backs who know the game and can organise themselves might just pull us out of this mess but any improvement is likely not to be as a result of anything Paul Jewell has to offer.

I am on the Jewell Out band wagon.
Never Never Employ a scouser.

If this was the best we can put out on the pitch today we will be relegated without question. Once again the team selection was awful - Ellington up front a joke, Murphy the laziest left winger you will ever see and Martin who at least gives you 100% left on the bench. The defence today was in tatters mainly because of the ineptness of Delaney who does not appear to have a footballing brain and a goalkeeper who was waiting for a clanger and it happened to day.
When Delaney went off we improved at the back but the match was already lost by then. Edwards did ok coming forward but pushing forward for the equaliser got caught and it was game over. Plus points and not many of them thought Leadbitter played his heart out but should have equalised with a close range header and Scotland who at least holds the ball and looks like a threat.
Sadly after yet another awful first half the clock is ticking for Jewell although the players should look at themselves today as why did they perform in the second half when it was too late. Disappointed that not once in the second half unless I missed it did Jewell enter the technical area. Is this the sign of a broken man facing the inevitable - time will tell but if he is being allowed to buy new players he will surely still be here this time next week.

Interesting that with so many people on this site calling for the manager's head I have still not heard any protests at the games. Having said that there was very little atmosphere once again today.

i dont dislike jewell, in fact i really hoped he would do well but this guy is seriously starting to make me feel ill!!!

I just dont understand the following issues:
1) too many signings (what is it about 15 now this season alone)
2) so many bad signings
3) not addressing the defence
4) ignoring our youngsters
5) targeting players 32 years old and above all the while
6) too many loans
7) Playing edwards RB when he cant defend for toffee but is actually decent going forward (here's a thought we could maybe play him RW and attack teams down the flanks, cant be any worse than what we have)
8) whats Jamie peters done (one of our better players under keane yet no look in under PJ)
9) the whole club is going down the pan from top to bottom, £36 to watch a very very poor side
10) please please do not sign that ex norwich numpty who cant get in mk dons team

We know we've suffered from defensive mistakes. What we don't know is what is being done to correct those mistakes. Any manager in any kind of business will, if he is worth his salt, take immediate action to avoid a repetition of those mistakes. This joke of a football team has been allowed to continually embarrass the club without any apparent action from the management team. It's clear he can't explain this away; why can't he explain what the management team are doing to improve the situation?

Blue041273 - precisely. I can forgive mistakes but what's unforgiveable is not to learn from them. Any one of us would loose our jobs for making the same mistakes week in week out...
