Ward Set to Join Palace On Monday
Ward Set to Join Palace On Monday
Friday, 25th May 2012 18:26

Town target Joel Ward will sign a four-year deal with Crystal Palace on Monday, according to reports. The 22-year-old Portsmouth defender or midfielder was understood to be weighing up a move to the Eagles or one of other interested parties but now appears to finally have made his choice.

Ward is believed to be due at Selhurst Park on Monday to undergo a medical and to put pen to paper on a deal for an undisclosed fee understood to be in the region of £450,000.

On Wednesday, TWTD reported that Palace were strong contenders for Ward’s signature, however, with the wages they were offering believed to be significantly below the contracts available elsewhere, it had been thought Ward would instead join one of the other chasing clubs. Palace’s relative proximity to his family in Portsmouth is likely to have played a major part in his decision.

Leeds, previously understood to be the frontrunners, dropped out of the race having failed to raise the cash to finance the deal, while Burnley, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday were the other interested parties.

Ward opting not to join the Blues will be a blow to manager Paul Jewell, who has been targeting the one-time Bournemouth loanee since January when a bid was accepted but personal terms turned down.

In March, Ward was at Portman Road to talk about a loan move before the deadline but Pompey’s administrator pulled the plug on the switch with the crisis club then still having a chance of salvaging their Championship status.

Dont know the background to this but once again Clegg and co look pretty stupid.

Allowing the club to be strung along by a player, any player, for four months or more is unacceptable!

I'm not a fan of Jewell or Clegg but don't blame either for this deal not happening. From what I've read Evans put a take it or leave it offer on the table and for this player I think that was the smart move. It looked like he hung out for Leeds as long as he could but bet a small fortune it doesn't sign a contract renewal further down the line.

FOUR YEAR CONTRACT!!! Palace you are mugs! Don't blame Ward for signing that at all....What if he doesn't work out, what if CP get relegated...they won't be able to afford to pay him off and he would not move if the money isn't right, even if they wanted to sell him.

This is a big gamble on their part and not at all a reflection on Ipswich. Even when we signed Creswell, he was only given a longer contract once he had settled in and proved his worth.

We have an average Manager (being kind to him)and a Chief Exec, who are so far off the mark it is unreal. Couldn't organise a contract for booze in a pub.

Get used to it Dozzells Bobblehat & Co - there will be much more of this to come - unless the terrible twins get their heads together and live in the real world of football as of today.

Glad my season ticket money - is still in MY bank.

BTW Ward joining Palace ahead of us isn't anything to do with palace being a better team/more chance of promotion than us.. He has joined them only because he is a Pompey boy and now he won't have to move away from family/friends and that Palace finally upped their contract offer for him.
He was keen on Leeds only because his best mate was there.
This is according to some Pompey fans i know.

So are we really surprised?

Just a little worrying that we seem unable to close any of these deals. However, I also have to question why we insist of chasing players who seem to have made it quite clear early on that they weren't that bothered about joining us. Look at the time we have wasted over the past few seasons trying to get David Nugent when he patently did not want to come here.

Come on Town, sort it out for goodness sakes!

Sindre94 - but they would all want more than £200 a week and a packet of crisps - so forget it.

h32, are you okay? You seem so angry :P

Get behind the team, the manager and the club. Wouldnt harm anyone

Sindre94 - with the exception of yourself obviously, if this continues there will be many more unhappy people come the start of the season. Not so clever mate for those who cough up and watch every home game i.e season ticket holders.
But of course, some will be happy with anything - as for being okay, I assure you I am perfectly OK. Maybe you should ask certain others.

In one way, not bothered that he isn't coming to us but in another, worried about who we will attract. With our CEO's ability a fat 34 year old who will play for £200 a week and a packet of crisps, oh wait.....that's me! Best get down Portman Road right now, bet they still wont be able to do a deal tho.......

Great, move on now. Not bothered, clearly was only going to come here if no-one else wanted him. That's not the sort of player we want here thanks.

buryblue77 - trying hard to make light of the situation just hoping things will change for the better - but SERIOUSLY this all amounts to a huge problem within, and at the Club.
If only I didn't care so much about it - and that is just what I must stop doing for the first time in my life.

Sick of hearing about the guy, is there no real news to report? There has been reports about this possible bench warmer all year, we never needed him and I can't believe so much effort has been made reporting on the fella, he would not have made our team into a promotion chasing side. Bored.

I wish people would give the CEO a break. The earlier article on this proposed transfer clearly indicated that the player was given a 'take it or leave it' offer several weeks ago by Marcus Evans who evidently has the final say on all such matters. This stance is for me eminently reasonable. What is not reasonable is to suggest that the fact that the player chose not to 'take it' is somehow Simon Clegg's fault.
