Jewell Remaining Patient
Jewell Remaining Patient
Thursday, 7th Jun 2012 08:55

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he’s remaining patient as he looks to add around six players to his squad ahead of 2012/13. Right-back Elliott Hewitt became the first signing of the summer when he joined from Macclesfield last week, while plenty of names have been linked with moves to Portman Road since the season ended.

Jewell, who dismisses many of those links as purely speculative, says getting the right players signed is the priority, not signing them in a hurry: “Not many deals get done so early in the summer and we’re in no rush anyway. It’s important to get the right players on the right terms.

“Supporters always want to see new faces arriving and I’m as impatient as anyone, more so, in trying to bring players here, but you have to remain patient.

“Signing players is a complicated business nowadays. It’s just the way it is. Yes, in an ideal world I’d like to have all our players in place by the time we return to pre-season training in July, but we don’t live in an ideal world.”

The Town squad are due back at Playford Road for the start of their 2012/13 preparations on July 5th.

Hope some of posters on here have the same patience. Getting the right players is much more important than getting them quickly.

Remember people, we have signed as many players as any other of our championship rivals so far (albeit 1). So don't go on about how Clegg's mucked up.

Now this makes much more sense than the "get em in early" he was quoted as saying at the end of last season!!! that just raised expectations.

It;s your fault Jewlio. If you don't know, keeep your mouth shut. Who said he wanted to get new players in early, who wanted them young, or tall and athletic, or experoienced. Who said he wanted 5/6 and needed to get a new spine, who has been mentioning what good players we have been linked with.

Admit it, you don't hnow what you'tre doing or you're winding the fans up.

Bluey123 - Leeds are in the same position as us, Warnock says he needs a clearout and 5 new players, and they have brought only the one player, so . . . . . . . . .

Well said Lancsblue! Unfortunately, as we know, football and Patience are uncomfortable bed-fellows and sadly there will be a lot of supporters who will see Paul jewell's remark as a negative admission of failure. I agree completely with you however and firmly believe that like in life itself, patience is indeed a virtue of the highest order and we jolly well deserve a change of fortunes in the transfer market! I feel sure P.J. will bide his time here and get the best players available at a reasonable price and in ample time for the forthcoming league campaign.

As long as PJ is actively chasing his targets I don't mind. Don't want to see very late signings that mean we have to spend the first half of the season bedding them in as they weren't part of the pre-season preparations!

Agree it's important to get the right players - question is can we attract them? We do however need to learn from last season - where we failed to land top targets and then relied on loans and has-beens - many of whom are no longer at the club. PJ needs to target the right positions as well.

Although we need to be patient, it is worth noting that other clubs ARE signing players and being in June I would now expect ITFC and PJ to up the amount of transfer activity.

what p.j has said makes perfect sense "the right players on the right terms" we need to build a team of equals, no big time charlies who upset the balance of the squad by being paid double of what others are.

The real supporters are those who support the club but do not agree to all the rubbish that is put over by pro Jewell supporters and cannot see the overall picture that this great club is being taken to the lowest depth in our history. This is all the fault of the Clegg Evans campaign 2 of the worst managers in our history .
Paul Jewell comes out with all this rubbish day after day and does nothing, we have a few decent players ,no youth team to talk of,a coaching staff with no coaching with no clue a pitch that needs work done before long.
This club is in turmoil.
And before anyone accuses me of of not being a true supporter I have been a season ticket holder for more years than most of you have lived.

With the Euro's PJ does have more time which can only be a good thing in identifying the right players. If we can sign Daryl Murphy this week or next two additions already would be an excellent start. Important season coming up we need to see progress Paul.

Generally, I'm a Jewell fan, at least to the point that I have never felt we'd be better off moving him on. And of course he is right that it is better that we get the right players on the right terms, than sign early place holders. I guess he was hoping we'd get Ward... Two defenders in early doors...

But he hasn't helped himself here. Nothing has changed since he made the comments, and if he was simply stating an ideal position back then, he had no need to do so, it is obvious and non-remarkable that, ideally we would like players earlier than later...

Ultimately I expect he will be judged on results to christmas and this will be forgotten. If his mistakes last year were the players targeted, and this year his expectation management but uiltimately getting the right players in will we care? No. But if the team is not doing the business by christmas (or are at best borderline) then I'm sure this will feed into ME decision making.

Please remember, football is a day on day process. PJ hasn't just come back from holiday and decided to go window shopping to see what he can buy. He has been Town's manager now for a long time in football management terms and he must surely have, by now, identified the players, or more pertinently, the kind of players who will improve the squad and make us more competitive. Clearly the current message is that the players specifically targeted, eg Joel Ward, won't come. These must have been identified months ago clearly fruitlessly. Therefore we are now fishing in a pool wishing and hoping to catch a good one with other clubs doing exactly the same.

It goes without saying that it the transfer market is complicated but this is too much like groundhog day. Year after year we have been told that we need to get our transfer business concluded early but when push comes to shove patience is suddenly the key. Next thing you know panic sets in and a bunch of gambles are taken with the inevitable depressing results.

This may be negative but there comes a time when all the spinning makes you giddy.

Completely agree with Bluey420. It is being linked with so many players that is creating disharmony on this website. Most of it is utter drivel.

Bluey123 - yes the club is underperforming and us fans are not getting value for money. This does need to be sorted out and fast before we slip any further. However, it sounds like you are being constantly wound up by the nonsense on this website and suggest you take a break for the next couple of weeks (as i doubt whether we sign anyone in this period).

I think the majority of Ipswich fans are patient but that patience has been lasting for the past 7 seasons and is now wearing very thin. Fine to be patient if we end up signing good quality players. However, we were told to be patient last summer ( and most of us were) only for the club to land hardly any of it's 'targets' ( Billy Sharpe, Coppinger, et al) and end up panicking signing Sonko, Ingarmarsson, etc.. Another year on and still no sign of a quality Goalkeepeer or Centre Back. I think if PJ fails to land both of these before the season starts then we are in for another struggle.

Indeed we all need to be patient. The football club should be run with the long-term view in mind (and I'm hoping the Hewitt signing heralds this). It's the short-term signings that have led us to tread water, and indeed, slip backwards over the last few years.

Signing the right players and building a good squad will take time and patience. I just hope we stick with Jewell and give him time to put his words into action (barring a relegation fight next season). Even top clubs can't sign all their targets straight away, remember Barcelona chasing Fabregas summer after summer! Players dropping down from the Premiership aren't going to see us as likely promotion candidates preferring teams like Leicester, Leeds, Cardiff or Birmingham. We stand a better chance scouring lower and foreign leagues.

I really don't expect us to start making any signings until pre-season starts in July as it's in the player's best interests to hold out and see what offers they receive. I wouldn't get too worked up or excited about rumours on here or elsewhere - were we ever linked to Hewitt?
