Target Kuszczak Was at Town for Talks Saturday, 7th Jul 2012 07:30
Boss Paul Jewell has revealed that ex-Manchester United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak was at Town for talks earlier in the summer before opting to join Brighton, who he believes offered the 30-year-old Polish international “a fantastic deal”. As TWTD reported in April, Kuszczak was top of Jewell’s wish-list as he looks to bring in a new number one for the season ahead.
Jewell said: “I met him here. I had Tomasz Kuszczak here. But I think Brighton offered him a fantastic deal, it was as simple as that.
“I spoke to him, but you have to work within your framework. I don’t know why he went, I would imagine he got a good deal and Brighton is a good club.”
He says players will look at the various options which are on the table rather than taking the first offer they receive: “I spoke to him in my office. He was impressed with the place and everything, but at the end of the day we aren’t a club that can just get a player in and not expect him to leave without signing.”
Bosnian-born former Swiss international Eldin Jakupović is currently on trial but Jewell says he could also add another keeper to his ranks even if the 27-year-old impresses: “We’re having a look at him for the week, but we’ve also got two or three other targets that even if that happens we might pursue.”
He says he’s not ruling out bringing in a player from the lower leagues, although we understand there is nothing in links with former Colchester keeper Ben Williams.
Jewell says he wanted a number one who was plying his trade in the lower leagues last season but who has become rather more familiar in recent months: “If I thought that goalkeeper was the right one then absolutely.
“There are a lot of decent goalkeepers in the lower leagues. Look at Jack Butland. He was on loan at Cheltenham last year and now he’s in the England squad.
“We tried to get him here last year but he was at Cheltenham. He’s been around and now all of a sudden [Birmingham] want £6 million for him. There are good goalkeepers down there.”
Meanwhile, US international keeper Brad Guzan, who was linked with the Blues in March is set to re-sign at Aston Villa having previously decided to leave the Premier League side.

Question is, how can Brighton actually offer players more Town can - their attendances have not been larger than ours , so I would assume their income generated would not be larger than ours. This being the criyeria for proportional expenditure, as I understand it. Any one know the answer to this please?

Championship Season 2011-12 average attendances: Brighton & Hove Albion 20,027 Ipswich Town  18,266 Perhaps Town are not such the attraction that some of our more one-eyed contributors would have us believe.

Perhaps Brighton are taking the risk and not preparing for the FFP, whereas we, correctly in my opinion, are. I believe fully that we will rise as lots around us fall because when this kicks in for real, those who gambled and lost are paddle less up a creek famous for its name. In my opinion.

could it be that we don't have the financial backing at the moment seeing as Keane and Jewell have wasted so much money thus far; expect our new manager to be backed with serious promotion amount money. Jewell will be off at end of September I would hope so new man can have a decfent crack.

Unfortunately with FFP people will find a way round it leaving honest Joe's like Town at a disadvantage. Doesn't make it wrong following FFP but just a likely consequence. Still if it forces us to develop our own players and look to lower leagues then great.

Don't be silly, he's come to town for a walk not a talk.. In any case, if he did come to PR to talk,, with whom? Last time someone dropped by for a chat both PJ and SG were out to lunch(completely)

Monach Blue Another point on the attendance could be the price of tickets, Our attendance could be higher if the price was lower, Some Peterborough fans were getting a bus together for the match last season and decided against it as the tickets were £38. The points above about FFP are spot on think a lot of teams will take the gamble, Blackburn have spent £3 Mill on Best and then signed Gomez and they will be on far more than we could offer, One report that I read stated that Norwich turn over had gone from £40 Mil to £225 Mil. If thats the case you can see why they are taking the risk. Sir Bobby build a team on not much money and had a system that worked for the players so it can be done. Football has changed since then and we will never see the likes of Sir Bobby again or did fans say the same thing when Sir Alf left for England

I like the sound of the young free Swiss and German chaps that we have been linked to anyway. Much more fun. He would have been a big fish all shouts and no calpability.

Here we go again exactly the same ad last pre season. PJ was coming out saying exactly the same we were in talks with Upson, Woodgate, Nugent etc they really liked the place, the training facilities etc.Unfortunatly they got offered fantastic deal elsewhere. We had this with Joel Ward too Jewell said on more than one occasion that he wanted to come but yet again we missed out. This is why we are mid table champ team. We have to settle for second best. Don't we learn why rush be 1st in to speak to a player he uses our offer as a stepping stone to get better elsewhere. What will be next we had Robin Van Persie down here! PJ thinks its impressive to say who we might get, I and I'm sure all of us just want to hear him shut up and talk about players who actually we might stand a chance in signing.

Ipswich24 wake up and smell the coffee, look at the problems at Rangers, the writing is firmly on the wall. The club were in administration and hugely in debt not that long ago, we need to work within a framework and as others have said with FFP coming Ipswich will be seen as one of the more sensible clubs.

Bigolconnor Read on Vital football about the german Maximillan that he was prone to mistakes so may not be the one for us as he sound a bit like ALB, but who knows as I know nothing about the lad to be fair

Brighton have also signed Wayne bridge on a season long loan - that can''t be cheap! There is clearly a fine line here and it would seem that brighton are playing with fire. However, on the other hand a team of our stature should also be competitive. If we don't offer the money players won't come here. I am not saying we go mad and put ourselves in a risky situation - but I do fear that we are being too cautious. Other clubs are spending money and signing players. We are not. The clubs investing stand a better chance of promotion. The other question which some will not want to ask, is why PJ is targeting players way beyond our wage structure? Surely this should have been considered early on? We made the same errors last season. Time to SIGN some players rather than talk about it. Fans are not interested in 'could have signed this player, we wanted this one'. The reality is progress has been far too slow.

I agree to an extent. But ALB is more like the guy who played for your five a side club a couple of times that was going out with your mates girlfriend. The European chaps have pedigree. They have been with very decent clubs and played some international matches. And they are young. I just think that we need to start fresh. We've got players like Carlos and Jason and Delaney (no reason for first name basis switch) not to forget Bullard, all of whom are going to be seeing out their contracts. For the sake of this FFP we would be much better suited keeping our wages as low as possible. In doing this we have lost the likes of kuszczak and co. and possibly even chambers. But do you know what, FairPlay to Evans. He is sticking to a strict policy. The managers have all had loads of cash up until now and failed with it to a greater extent. What we have left from the money is; Lee Martin. JET, Chops, Scotland, Edwards, Cresswell, Bullard, Drury and Stevenson. Personally, I love these players, even stevenson who has hardly played. When you add the 'Ipswich' boys to that list you get; Hyam (Guam in predictive text), Carson, Smith, Murray. I love these guys too. Now reading these names makes me feel excited for this season. ITFC is in all the above. I want new players to be part of THIS team. Not come in with big demands and no passion. Scotland and Edwards have both dropped their demands because they love it. A true example, Just saying

This just goes to show we can't/wont compete with the other bigger clubs in this league. What do you do though? It hasn't worked out so far, signing big name players and paying decent wages. If we still have premier League ambitions we have to compete but we run the risk of doing a Portsmouth or worse a Rangers by doing so. If we continue our current business model then we could end up equally at risk as we may fail to compete in this league at all.

Algarvefan what do you mean wake up? I understand the FFP and that we need to now cut our cloth accordingly, but why does PJ target these players in 1st place then answer that! Then he goes on to say yeah we had them here they loved the place and go elsewhere. Stop wasting time and get players in like Cresswell like Hewitt who see it as a privelage and step up to be here.
