Jewell: Game Boring But Happy With Week's Work
Jewell: Game Boring But Happy With Week's Work
Thursday, 19th Jul 2012 20:40

Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that Town’s 1-1 draw with Den Bosch was somewhat less than a classic but overall was pleased with the way the pre-season training camp near Eindhoven has gone. Aaron Cresswell netted a deflected freekick as both Town’s Dutch pre-season games ended 1-1.

Jewell said: “It was a pretty boring game, let’s be honest. The way they play, it was like keep-ball, there was no tempo to the game.

“We’ve worked the players hard while we’ve been here and I think it showed today - we looked a bit flat. There were lots of changes, lots of people we were trying to get an hour into and we didn’t pick up any injuries.”

The Blues boss has been pleased with the way the week has gone: “It’s been good. The performances in the games haven’t been brilliant but it’s about working towards August 18th.

“We think we know where we need to strengthen, it’s not as if we don’t know. We need a couple of players, two or three players, to get the team physically stronger.

“We are a small team, we need to do better with the ball and without the ball. But it’s all about fitness, it’s all about training, not about the result.

“We didn’t lose, that’s twice we’ve come from behind, but it’s not about the result at this stage of pre-season, it’s about learning about players and getting players fit.”

I like the fact that we have been able to come from behind in both games. I know you can't read anything into these games but last season that situation would have probably ended in a defeat.

Someone should tell him the season kicks off on the 14th with the cup game rather than the 18th

"The way they play, it was like keep-ball" Maybe us English could learn a bit from the Dutch eh Paul??? As Brendan Rodgers says, pre season shouldnt just be about running about, everything should be done with a ball at your feet. Thats how you get could technically, the ball should constantly be glued too the feet like the Spainish, Dutch, Germans and Italians do. That way we can play a bit of keep ball and try and build from the back instead of launching the ball up the field at every opportunity.

Big Foot Blue,
I don't think Jewell is too worried about the cup. If we win cup games then it is good for morale but if we lose a cup game then we can "concentrate on the league" which is a far greater prize if you win it.
He'll view it as the last warm-up match but maybe with the core of the team and a couple of squad players to see how they gel.
