Davies Could Stay at Derby Until January
Davies Could Stay at Derby Until January
Friday, 3rd Aug 2012 09:11

Derby boss Nigel Clough says Town target Steve Davies could remain at Pride Park until January with no one yet having made an acceptable offer for the striker. The Blues have been after the former Tranmere man all summer but with boss Paul Jewell saying that the Rams asking price, believed to be £1 million, is beyond the club’s means at present.

Clough says that Davies, who has a year left on his contract but wants to move to a club in the south for family reasons, may be given a run-out in a friendly this week.

So far the striker has been left out to avoid him picking up an injury and he’s not joined the squad for a training camp, which coincidentally is being held in Suffolk ahead of a friendly at Colchester tonight.

The Rams boss said: “Nobody has really met our valuation. There will come a point where we will have to draw a line under it and he will be involved with us until at least January, but we haven't reached that point yet.

"If nothing has happened by early next week, we could see him play at Belper on Tuesday.

"We have to recognise the fact he might well be here until January, so we have to start getting him some games with a view to him being involved.”

Yesterday, Bristol City boss Derek McInnes ruled his club out of the running for the 24-year-old frontman.

Oh, yes, and perhaps a good psychological ploy now would be to up our offer by £100,000 - "take it or leave it!" But then the most expensive thing I've ever bought is probably a bike, so what do I know?

Well, hopefully Jewell, ME & Cleggy get their poker faces on and play Derby a decent bluff on his real valuation. Cant see either backing down unless Derby want rid off. Need to play it cool like thier other deals and hopefully get him at a decent price or walk away.

We need a defensive right back, another centre back and a back up left back for cresswell who still has a lot to learn defensively. Our defence has been awful since mcauley left. Our 2 full backs are not good defensively and our two left sided CBs are not consistant. Therefore how can we make significant progress this year with such frailties at the back. Think PJ should concentrate funds on defenders and forget about everything else.

Chops was 1m and he was on and off the boil last season. Big price tags don't always result in big performance players. Davies has been injury prone in the past.

Well done to the SC & PJ on not giving in to Clough. We are not going to be the next Portsmouth. Derby except our offer or we will move on. Please realise the longer you hold on to Davies his value is dropping and he'll walk away for phuckall next year.

Has Davis officially handed in a transfer request yet?

I thought it was the player that wanted to leave not that Derby want to get rid of him, sounds a bit like the Van Persie issue. Why would Derby let him go for less than their valuation. He may leave for free next year and that is Derbys perogative as presumably they will have to replace him at some point.

Given that we normally only play one up front and have Chops and Scotland (plus Murray) I would prefer that we sorted out the midfield and who is going to provide the ammunition for the strikers as we look very weak down the left.

even derby are messing around with our 3 stoogies who are trying to get players in.itfc circus goes on every guy on our list has issues when all others get their men.we need a cb quick so dont spend cash on a striker at the mo we might have to go to the moon so no one can nab him.if pj is your men to take us up give him the money to get the players he wants not the guys he dosent really want because their cheaper mr evens.

We need Davies and a centre back with a real aerial presence or we can forget about a top 6 finish. A winger would also add to our armoury

The way i see things.... Davies wants out of Derby. Derby want rid of Davies, We want Davies, Davies wants to move south, so Mr Davies walk into the managers office and say.. i want out and want to go to Ipswich sort it out asap as i,m no use to you here! If only life was as simple as that! or use the wonderful invention called the telephone and give PJ a call and make it happpen!

Look Nigel, we could be relegated by January so if you don't accept our offer now there may not be another chance and lets face it, other clubs havent exactly fallen over themselves for his signature!

I'm just wondering if 'slowerball' has actually read the article?

Derby DO want Davies, that's why they're pushing for a bigger price. But the player wants to move south for family reasons.

I'm with BlueBoots, don't pay more than we think he's worth and i'm pretty sure they'll drop the price son anyway. They won't want him to go for next to nothing in January.

Im sorry but if we want the player that much then pay £1m. If you wait until Jan then the chances are he wont be match fit until feb/March.

but why isnt the club moving for decent CB's? without that then were in trouble anyway

Chris Makin .why are you talking in such a basic manner "what happened to Wickhams money " this isnt pretend football or championship manager his money has gone into our massive debt and running the club .
Also the chairman may be trying to recoup some of the out lay for Fulop,Murphy,Lisbie,Leadbitter,Edwards,Priskin,Scotland , Schumi,Mac,Norris etc that we have recieved nothing back for ? Thats what happened to the Wickham money

Agreed BlueBoots...Derby are playing a waiting game, as are we, i would be happy with him coming for 600-700k i think that is about the right price.

I know everyone is getting frustrated, but we've actually had a really good window so far with Loach Chambers and Hewitt, they should be great signings for the next 4 seasons for 350k odd.

People saying we should just pay the 1mil asking price for davis should look at what we could potentially do with the extra 500k that is being asked for from Derby

That being said Davis (or someone similar) is a must signing...but surely by now we all know that 2 weeks in the window is a long long time and the right thing is to get a good a deal as possible??

I would also Love to see Boyd come in and get Collins back (unlikely) or i would actually be happy with a season long loan from a young prem CB a bit like caulker for swansea last season, someone of that ilk.

Potentially Davis Boyd and CB on Loan could be done for around 2mil?

Coppinger id be happy with...but agree that he is not the answer but would provide a good experienced bit of depth to the squad, i reckon hed be hungry to perform as well cos his next move may be his last.

I do not want us to overpay for Davies, and given his injury record £500K seems about right. We've got to get some height into the attack though, someone who can win a header! Also, that sort of striker can do a very important role coming back to defend corners and set-pieces, a known weakness for us at the moment.

As for the Wickham money, it largely went paying the wages of Keane's signings before we even start about thinking about the transfer fees we threw away. Look at Surco70's list: Fulop £1M, Lisbie £0.8M, Leadbitter £2.6M, Edwards £1.4M, Priskin £1.7M, Scotland £0.8M, Schumi £0.5M?, Mac £1.1M,Norris £2M...that's a whopping £11.9M there just on fees, mainly wasted by Keane.

My Opinion is this.

Firstly we could go out sign a lower league striker with no experience at this level and spend 400k on him and he doesnt make the grade or we spend 850k on a man who judging by the comments by some Derby supporters on this site is well rated and liked in the terraces and who they believe is a bargin at 1million. We all have an opinion on all our own players and most of us are in agreement as to who is any good or not. Maybe 1million for this guy is outside of our means however im sure a compremise is available which suits all parties involved, Then its just down to agreeing the personnel terms with Cleggy.....Oh right ...anyone know any good strikers in Division 2????????

Surco72 and Mark...

Now that puts things into perspective. Immagine what Jewell could do if he had half of that money...

I have heard from a very good source that Keane once punched Leadbitter at half time after he screamed at hi for being a cr4p captain. I cant be certain if this is true, but it comes from a father of a player that was in the dressing room. i feel i need to attach things like allegedly so he doesnt come after me...

Not only spending all that money but as weve repeatly said getting rid of rhodes, kulg, the whole scouting network. RK set this club back 7 years in my opinion.

Fair enough, we can move on then and look at other players whose clubs might accept our fees. Davies is a good player from what i've seen but he's not the only player we can get and at least we dont have to go chasing him until the end of the transfer window and ultimately be dissapointed as he joins another Championship side. Adam Hammill has been told he can leave Wolves and he could maybe fill our left side solution, why not try him if wages aren't to steep?, i doubt he would cost anymore than 500k. I think we also have to realise that although the pre-season hasn't gone how we'd entirely like in terms of results, and lack of strength in certain positions, we are in a division which is very unpredictable and requires great endurance and a level of consistency which we found towards the second half of last season especially in terms of our home form. If we can continue that, bearing in mind we've not played at home in pre season so far and work on our away form then you never know what we can do. Yes we requre more quality in certain positions and 50% of it is how much does Jewell want it? how much do our players want it?. I was really upbeat when Keane through money at it and signed Norris, Leadbitter ect and we had a poor season so who knows what we can do.
