Town Draw Carlisle Away
Town Draw Carlisle Away
Wednesday, 15th Aug 2012 12:33

Town face a lengthy trip to Cumbria in the second round of the Capital One Cup, having drawn League One Carlisle United away. The tie will be played in the week beginning August 27th.

The Blues last faced Carlisle, who beat Accrington Stanley 1-0 in their first round clash on Saturday, in the 1978/79 season when they ran out 3-2 victors in an FA Cup third round tie at Portman Road.

Kevin Beattie was amongst the scorers against his hometown club, along with John Wark and Arnold Muhren.

Overall, the clubs have only met 10 times in total, the teams winning five games apiece. The clubs have not previously met in the League Cup.

Town were last at Brunton Park in the Cumbrians' only season in the top flight, 1974/75, when the Blues were defeated 2-1 with Trevor Whymark on the scoresheet.

Blues boss Paul Jewell and Carlisle manager Greg Abbott are good friends from their time as players at Bradford together.

Nothing like a length of the country trip straight after another long trip to Blackpool the weekend before and a big home game against Huddersfield the next weekend, going to be a draining week for the lads.

Couldn't of got a more worse tie. Not saying Carlisle are amazing but the travelling is going to tire the lads out. They might as well get a hotel up there to stay for a few weeks!

Dear oh dear. And I thought Exeter was a nuisance a couple of years back...!

Sometimes you do have to wonder whether there's a wisdom in us usually getting knocked out of this tournament early!

More to the point, what time are we going to get home after that one. May as well skip sleep and go straight to work

Oh bugger! as I find it difficult to get to games (as I work every Saturday) I can only make home evening games, I was hoping for another home match which o
nce I've finished work I can usually get over in just about enough time, not going to make this one though but at least it should be easy (ish) to get through.

Portman Road, Ipswich to Brunton Park, Carlise = 340 miles

Portman Road, Ipswich to FC Helmond Sport, Netherlands (route though London, Dover to Calais, through France, Belgium and then up into Holland) = 336 miles

Our European pre-season friendlies were closer than this one haha!

Town need to set up a training camp in the north of England that week to cut down the travelling!

Sorry to ramble but just wanted to make a quick comment. Have been a Town fan for 30 years, although never having actually lived in Ipswich (apologies but born in Norwich and moved away when 12). Anyway, I moved to NZ about seven years ago but still love the club more than anything and log on to Phil's brilliant site virtually every day. Unfortunately I had to move back to the UK, and Carlisle, in Nov when my mum fell ill. She passed away in May and I am still here, helping dad. Obviously it's the most horrific time, but four days ago I booked tickets for the Blackpool game, looking to see ITFC for the first time in over a decade. And then what happens...!! I get to see them twice in a week, up here in Carlisle. For the first time, in a long time, I actually had a smile on my face today. Can't believe I get to walk to an Ipswich game!! Any fans who make the trip fancy a pint at the local opposite the ground (the Beehive), just let me know. And Phil, thanks again for the site. Will try and submit a blog or two later in the season. Ipswich Town and your site are one of the few lights still on in my life right now. COYB
