Jewell Confident on Target
Friday, 17th Aug 2012 06:00

Town manager Paul Jewell is confident that he’ll land his latest transfer target having revealed that he made a bid for a player yesterday morning. The Blues boss has previously admitted he has had a difficult close season in which he has missed out on several targets for a variety of reasons.

Jewell said: “I am confident. I’m trying not to kid myself as we’ve had so many knockbacks this summer. I think the season should start after the window closes because it becomes a bit of a nonsense.

“The season starts tomorrow and two weeks later the window closes. We’re all at the mercy of Premier League clubs because if they haven’t got a replacement for a player, they keep the player there [until the end of the window]. It’s a nightmare really.”

The Blues boss says former Town man Connor Wickham isn’t currently in his thoughts regarding a return on loan, despite Sunderland adding to their striking options by signing Louis Saha yesterday: “I would never close the door on anything, but we’ve got other targets.”

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Daryl Murphy, a player Jewell has said he'd like to see return to Portman Road if a deal could be done with Celtic, is out of action for a month with a hamstring injury.

Why the sudden confidence in landing this particular player? Either it's Davies and we have stumped up what we believe Derby will accept or the only other thing I can see it being is a loan signing for Jewell to be so confident of getting it done in time for Saturdays game

There is a lot more to this story than we know. Jewell would never come out and say this if we wasnt almost sure this would happen. If Jewell is just saying this to please the fans i'll be very disappointed! All looks good though. COYB

Wonder who it is.

PJ has been chatting specifically about a target man (and how it won't affect our passing game, but simply give us another option) in the last 24 hours, more so than any other position. So I agree with Ely Blue, Derby have porbably had an 'epiphany' and realised they will get next to nothing in January for Davies, and until then have a striker who doesn't want to be there...

We get linked to alot of players and yet there is no hint of who it is. could be Wilson but we will know by the end of today if he will be playing against Blackburn.

wilson has to be a posibility. I hope its not Davies as I can't see that he improves the squad.

Surely it won't be Wilson or Davies. Was premier league not mentioned? Could be a target under the radar. Anyone any sensible ideas?

Pleased with the signings to date but would love to have had a couple more in before the Blackburn game. COYB!

I just hope PJ has not become desperate after all of the knock backs. There is no point signing a player just to bring in a new face. We can do that by promoting one our own young lads.

It needs to be someone better than we have already got

I think it's unlikely to be Davies or wilson as he makes a big point about "being at the mercy"of Premier League clubs. Likely it's a prem player.

Well the "confident signing" hasnt signed! So much for being about to play tomorrow.

I knew Jewell should have kept quiet about this.

Wellingtonboot: That was Mark Wilson who went to Bristol City from Celtic

I dont mind if this is Davies or not, too be honest I had forgotten about him up until I just read a couple of comments, but I do think he would be a good addition just the whole saga annoys me. It goes without saying that we lack physical presence especially up front, going forward we could be great but as we have an attack minded side and a young side I'm not sure how disciplined the players will be if we're leading games. This is why a Daryl Murphy type player would be useful aswell as a more established powerful central midfielder so that they can help the players keep calm during matches and add obvious bite to the team.
