Peterborough Joint Bid Accepted
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that Peterborough United have accepted a joint bid for midfielder George Boyd (above) and striker Paul Taylor (below). The Blues manager, who also confirmed that Town are in talks with Celtic regarding former loanee Daryl Murphy, is set to meet with the Posh pair this afternoon to talks terms.

Speaking after last night’s Capital One Cup second round defeat at Carlisle, Jewell said: “It’s apparent we need players, I’ve been saying that for a while now.

“We made an offer for a couple of players [on Monday] and I’m hoping to try and move that forward [on Wednesday].

“[Peterborough have] accepted an offer from us and I’m meeting [the players] tomorrow and hopefully we can move that forward.”

As reported yesterday, Town are also in talks regarding Daryl Murphy’s return on loan from Celtic: “There’s the possibility that that might happen. We need some height in the team.

“It’s not just height, we don’t want to bring giants in, we want people who can play. The squad needs strengthening, not just the team. We’ve got to be able to make changes that can affect games.”

Having been in the North-West for the last few days he admits he’s not certain how far the deal which would see the Irish international return to Suffolk for a third loan spell has progressed: “I think he’s on Celtic’s bench tomorrow, so I’m not quite sure where we are with that.

“We’re trying to bring in not just those three, but we’re trying to bring one or two others in as well.

“We’re hoping that it’ll be busy [in the next few days before Friday's 11pm deadline]. It’s been a long, frustrating summer but hopefully, I don’t like to count my chickens, but hopefully we can get things sorted out in the next 24 or 48 hours.

“What we’re trying to do is bring players in, whether they’ll be loans or permanents depends on a lot of factors.”

Jewell refused to be drawn any further regarding Boyd and Taylor, who reports from Peterborough suggest will cost the Blues £2 million, until the deals are done: “I’ll answer those questions hopefully in the next couple of days.”

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed that his club had accepted offers on Twitter but not who they were for or from whom: "I won't speak about clubs but [I] can confirm Posh have accepted multiple bids for some of our listed players as [this] is how [the] market works."

Both Boyd and Taylor had been placed on the transfer list having refused to accept new contracts with a year remaining on their current deals.

Boyd, 26, has been linked with the Blues since his days with Stevenage. The central or left midfielder, a Charlton schoolboy as a youngster, joined Posh for a then-record Conference transfer fee of £260,000 in 2007.

The 6ft 1in tall Chatham-born player moved to Nottingham Forest on loan in March 2010 with a view to a longer-term switch but made only five starts and one sub appearance while at the City Ground, the latter against Town, before returning to London Road and signing his current contract.

England C cap and Scotland B cap Boyd, who was promoted from League One twice and League Two once with Posh, has made 261 starts and seven sub appearances while with Peterborough, scoring 70 goals. Jewell watched him in action the day after he had been appointed Town boss in January 2011.

While Boyd has a long history with Posh, 24-year-old Taylor only joined the Cambridgeshire side last year.

The Liverpudlian played youth football with Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City before moving on to Conference North side Vauxhall Motors, joining Chester City, then in League Two, on loan in the summer of 2008.

After he had made two starts and seven sub appearances, his Chester loan was terminated with news subsequently emerging that he had tested positive for cocaine and as a result he was banned for six months.

The 5ft 7in tall frontman joined Belgian side Montegnée on his return to football, doing well enough to earn a move to Anderlecht in December 2009.

A loan spell at Charleroi followed and in March 2011, without him appearing for Anderlecht, he joined Posh after impressing while on trial.

Last season Taylor netted 12 goals in 38 starts and nine sub appearances. This year he has scored twice — including one in last night’s 3-2 Capital One Cup defeat to Reading — in five games.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa seem unlikely to renew their interest in Aaron Cresswell with manager Paul Lambert having confirmed that his club has made an approach for Middlesbrough left-back Joe Bennett: “Hopefully something might happen on that. Has a bid gone in? Near enough."

The problem is if we tried to get another defender as our sole ambition that is all or nothing that we would end up with. We have to get quality players if and when they become available. If we already had a CB and a fit right back no one would be complaining about these potential signings, they'd be over the moon.

Just think by Friday we could have Boyd, Murphy, Chopra, Luongo and Martin making up our forward five with Scotland Taylor JET and Drury on the bench. Quite mouthwatering I'd say. Forget our shocking defence for the minute and score a tonne of goals.

(last bit was tongue in cheek)

If Murphy gets cup tied tonight with Celtic does that mean he cannot play in the Suffolk Senior Cup this year? Maybe the only chance we have of winning anything. oh and by the way.....................

CENTRE HALF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR GOD'S SAKE PLEASE.....................A CENTRE HALF.

It is clear we need a defender that said, if we can sign these two, it might actually mean that all this lovely possession we have been having will actually come to something. That will mean that we won't be hit on the counter attack every 30 seconds meaning the defence won't be tested as often. It is a weird way of trying to solve defensive problems, but would be an entertaining one!

I was impressed with Paul Taylor against us in the 7-1 defeat last season. In other Boro highlights I saw last season he appears to be a good, hard working player with an eye for goal. Another Scouser who's been around a bit and ready to come good, a la Jon Walters?

George Boyd? The new Darren Currie? ;-)

“We're trying to bring in not just those three, but we're trying to bring in one or two others in as well."

Defensive players I would imagine. So don't just assume that because we know who these three are that we are not looking at other positions.

For all our defensive frailties, an equally big problem is our lack of ruthlessness and incisiveness going forward. Players like Boyd and Taylor will help that and perhaps we can kill games like last night off.

Just hoping that P'Boro have not accepted bids for them from other clubs too; don't think my heart can take another "will they won't they" saga!!

Posh have accepted multiple bids for listed players.

BEWARE: There are other teams in for these lads too.
Hopefully the fact we have a double bid in will see these lads playing together again at PR.

Guirane N'Daw is a defensive player. Just thought I better get that out there, as many of the capslock brigade don't seem to have noticed.

What odds on them actually signing...mmmm pretty slim.

PunchNoHopers added 09:12 - Aug 29
Safe to say that they won't sign for us then, as we won't be able to agree terms!

Really think our priority should be to strengthen at the back though!

Great video yeah he was banging in goals, but these goals were scored 4-5 years ago when Peterborough were in the lower leagues, since he has been in the championship he's struggled along with now why peterborough are now struggling.
Kinda would explain why they now want rid of them, were better then these two peterborough rejects.

Danny Gabbidon, Papa Boupa Diop, Ivan Klasnic. All available i believe. Any one of them would strengthen our defence.

miltonsnephew go back and actually read the article, particularly the bit that says "Both Boyd and Taylor had been placed on the transfer list having refused to accept new contracts with a year remaining on their current deals.". Other clubs have repeatedly tried to sign Boyd over the last few seasons, from memory he was on the verge of going to Middlesbrough at one point and I know Burnley had a bid in for him last year.

This is like a cheap Hollywood remake of 'The Ward & Pearce Saga'.

irishtim - a lifesize mdf cutout of any of the above would probably do the same job.

IF we manage to get these two and Murphy on loan we will have real strength in depth going forward. I think PJ could have a healthy selection headache, not sure who I would go with actually. Anyway, most Posh fans see these two as their best players and the reason they avoided relegation. Boyd will add real creativity from the left and normally gets well into double figures in the scoring stakes. While Taylor is lightning quick, likes to take people on and has a real eye for goal. I don't see any reason why he couldn't play on the right in our 4-2-3-1?

On a seperate note, I have had enough of Tommy Smith making individual errors and looking vulnerable at the back. If he wasn't an academy product the fans would be calling for him to be dropped more vocally. I hope we get in a defender before 11pm Friday because as things stand we will continue to leak goals.

"We've got to be able to make changes that can affect games.....”

when did you last make a change that affected games other than negatively??..the goals against column (after substitutions made by you) last season was shocking..just go away!!! NOW!!

I will be happy with these two, however we still need defneders, badly. I hope PJ has something going on in that department behind the scenes also.
Unless his plan is to expend on last years scoring record even further, we could be winning games 5-3! It would be entertaining but not good for the heart!
I'm optimistic (again) and with these and the big lump that is N'Daw and a hard working Murphy we should be able to beat Huddersfield on Saturday.
COYB!!!!

I am happy with these two, but we still need a new Centre Back.

Fair enough guys. But we need some tough centre half. Experience at the back is vital. Any suggestions??

nitroblue1970 added 10:13 - Aug 29
apparently on Saturday we are playing a new formation of 6-1-3 as Jewell desperately tries to accommodate new signings and shore up the defence with more midfielders.......Can Boyd and Taylor play in defence?

I stupidly believed that defence was our priority for strengthening? Obviously not!...Huddersfieled will be his Waterloo! and Rhodes will be the artillery that does him in!
