Deal for Duo Could Be Revived
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 12:24

Town’s contract offers to Posh pair Paul Taylor and George Boyd were a long way from the terms they were after, according to reports in Peterborough. The duo were at Portman Road for talks, the traditional tour of the facilities and to pass medicals yesterday, but late in the evening informed the club via the agent they share that they would not be accepting their deals.

We understand that the move could still be revived before Friday's deadline but it would appear that the Blues would have to offer significantly improved terms in order to land the players.

Posh are keen for the duo to move on for the fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £1.75 million to £2 million before the transfer window closes with other clubs also believed to be interested, Brighton having been linked.

Town boss Paul Jewell, whose usual Thursday press conference was moved to Friday yesterday afternoon, is continuing his search for new signings, including alternatives to Boyd and Taylor, as he looks to add several players to his squad before Friday’s deadline.

Regardless of the failure to secure the Peterborough pair, midfielder Ryan Stevenson will complete his Blues exit prior to the transfer window closing.

The 28-year-old’s contract is set to be terminated in order to ease a switch back to a Scottish club — he was in talks with Motherwell yesterday but other sides are also interested — with his wife believed not to have settled in Suffolk since the midfielder’s £50,000 move from Hearts in January. Stevenson is also keen to play more regularly than he has at Town.

This put me on such a downer yesterday I'm not sure if I really care either way any more they or/and their agents are obviously to greedy and don't care to much about what club they get their demands.

let's not pay over the odds on these 2, we already have 2 little forwards who want to be here, 3 wide players and another keen to come (murphy). save the money and look for a centre-back and a bigger centre-forward.

Is anyone else surprised that we can't match the wages of 2 "average" players from Peterborough that nobody else seems interested in ?

Cant see them signing, they will wait till next window or next year, the fee paid to Boro will be less or nowt then so they can get a better deal. I feel sorry for Clubs these days they are always in a no win situation. They are being held to ransom by greedy agents and players.

The saddest thing is that two players could help a team potentially get promotion if they join. But instead they are more interested in how much money they get a week rather than ambition and playing for the love of football. Agents aren't their to give advice they're their to brainwash the two lads, why can't they be professional and ask for a decent pay rise if we for example get promotion or if they score a certain amount of goals or play a certain amount of games or something, for goodness sake love the sport you play and earn your pay rise, if you love what you see at a cub before they ask about terms then surely the money is a side issue not the priority, so clearly they're notthat fussed if they join.

Judging by the fact that we are offering "a long way from the terms they were after", I doubt the move will be revived. We would certainly be offering more money than they are on at Peterborough so I am inclined to agree with those who say that these two think a little bit much of themselves, although I wouldn't go as far as to call them "greedy b***ards" as, judging by our recent history in the transfer market, I'm guessing we are still offering below what would be expected. I would still like to sign them, they are good players as this level, but I'm happy for us to look at other targets as long as they are as good and actually willing to come.

Dunno why people moan on here saying "oh they are only i it for the money / we dont want these money grabbers"

Let me ask you this question. Has any of you ever left your current job for a lesser paid job?

thought not.

i think town now have massive problems convincing players to sign, its clegg, jewell, wages geography and the fear of league 1 football

To those telling Clegg and Evans to dig deeper . How much do you think they should be paid a week? And if you can answer that . How do you know they weren't? Wait the statement from Town before jumping to your conclusions yet again

We're getting seriously off the point, surely: What we still need is a sizeable central defender and a target man up-front. Glad to see Murph is returning, but he won't be in either role. If we get Boyd and Taylor, bonus - but there are two other players far more important to our season that have not appeared as yet. N'daw with help out in MF, and with Hyam, Luongo, JET, Carson, Martin, Drury and now possibly Murphy, do we need anyone else in midfield? Back to the real business - 36 hours to go....

It is staggering the delusions of grandeur that us Town fans hold. Being in Cobbald I talk to many away fans on their way down to Portman Road. I always ask them how Ipswich are perceived where they come from. They all say the same thing or thereabouts - that we are average. And very much beatable. We have been in this division for over a decade now. The day we all accept that fact, the sooner we will all stop moaning and actually get behind the players we have. We are not going to get promoted, no. We cannot afford to get promoted. We will survive. And no, we will not get relegated either.

What people tend to forget is that the club is MASSIVELY in debt, and Financial Fair play will kick many clubs in the teeth when they get stung.

So back to these guys. Using that outside perception of us - why would you want to come to a club that are proven year-on-year to be average and not going anywhere? They can do the same by staying at Peterborough. Unless of course....we pay you way more. It's logic and perfectly reasonable.

The only problem is unfortunately apart from free transfers and lower-league players, I cannot see a solution.

Sort it out - we are becoming an absolute laughing stock.

Fact is we shouldn't be needing to do our business the day before the deadline..last season finished 4 months ago - what the hell have we been doing in all that time??!!

Everycloud66 - are u serious !!. They can't save for the future earning approx 10k a week ! That's nearly half million a year, and several million over their career. Poor loves. If we can offer a little more within our structure fine, if not tell them both to jog on.

Could be that PJ let it be known that he was after these two, so that it put pressure on SC et al to get a deal done?

As NorseBlue says, a tall CB and CF is what is required. We don't need any more midfielders.

Posh supporter in peace but just thought I'd let you in on some info that us poshies know. Taylor and boyd both have the same agent and coincidently decided not to renew their contracts at posh. Boyd is the highest paid player at our club and I believe it's in the region of 12k a week (which, let's be honest too much for a small club like ours). Taylor on the other hand was offered a similar deal which was greatly improved from his origional and he turned it down. If you manage to get Taylor he is technically brilliant but it seems his ego is a problem. I watched him warming up against Leeds and he didn't seem bothered at all.

I live just outside Pboro and work in Pboro, but support the mighty town. I know a handful of Posh's players including Boydy. He is on 9.5k a week up here and I bet town were only willing to match that sum not better it.

As for Taylor he will be wanting Prem wages he is an arrogant guy that thinks he is good enough, numerous posh player disagree. He will be wanting nearer 15k me thinks which is about 10k too much!!

Like others have posted yes Taylor will give us energy but is he better than what we have at PR....... NO.

Boydy on the other hand will give us something else that added but of creativity to unlock a defence and he scores goals too.

Would have been great to have them both but by tomorrow I would love to see Boydy in a town shirt.

Players have a different worth depending on the clubs situation, and we need better players through the door. On Tuesday evening I along with most of you i guess, was waiting for Jewell to explain the Carlisle performance when the big story to come out was the Posh 2. We clearly could have won that game by half time if we had taken our chances. My point is if we want to improve and compete we need to pay the going rate for the right players. Dont think it will happen now but really feel we have missed an opportunity.

I keep reading on here how we need Boyd in an Ipswich shirt yet I work a Peterborough with alot of Posh fans and they all say they are not bothered if he leaves.

They are saying that the money is for Taylor as he will score goals.
Buy one get one free as they have the same agent and Boyd is reported to want 12k to stay at Posh.
The Posh fans say he is good Div one player but lazy and ordinary in the Championship and over rated.
IMO i would say that Murphy would be a better left winger and cheaper than Boyd.

If the wages the two are asking for are true and they sign a 3 year deal plus the fee it is close to £7 million (Boyd wants 16k and Taylor 12k double their Posh wage) Really are they that good they have not really helped Posh much as they have only won 3 or so matches in 2012.

Like I said before - its all about the money. Most footballers are mecinaries nowadays, they'll go and play for the highest bidder and happily deliver the pre-prepared ' as soon as I knew .......... were after me may mind was made up etc. etc.' these two Weill end up wherever their agent can get them the best deal.
