Deal for Duo Could Be Revived
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 12:24

Town’s contract offers to Posh pair Paul Taylor and George Boyd were a long way from the terms they were after, according to reports in Peterborough. The duo were at Portman Road for talks, the traditional tour of the facilities and to pass medicals yesterday, but late in the evening informed the club via the agent they share that they would not be accepting their deals.

We understand that the move could still be revived before Friday's deadline but it would appear that the Blues would have to offer significantly improved terms in order to land the players.

Posh are keen for the duo to move on for the fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £1.75 million to £2 million before the transfer window closes with other clubs also believed to be interested, Brighton having been linked.

Town boss Paul Jewell, whose usual Thursday press conference was moved to Friday yesterday afternoon, is continuing his search for new signings, including alternatives to Boyd and Taylor, as he looks to add several players to his squad before Friday’s deadline.

Regardless of the failure to secure the Peterborough pair, midfielder Ryan Stevenson will complete his Blues exit prior to the transfer window closing.

The 28-year-old’s contract is set to be terminated in order to ease a switch back to a Scottish club — he was in talks with Motherwell yesterday but other sides are also interested — with his wife believed not to have settled in Suffolk since the midfielder’s £50,000 move from Hearts in January. Stevenson is also keen to play more regularly than he has at Town.

I can believe Boyd is on big wages. Boro have been haopy for him to move on for a while - remember when he went to Forest on loan, but they decided not to sign him for whatever reason. I'd be happy missing out on him.

Taylor I'd like to see sign assuming he doesn't want silly wages. Do we have to negotiate for two players at a time? Did the same happen with Ward and Pearce at Portsmouth? Surely we can say we want Taylor and offer a fee and contract for him only. If Boro / he don't like it then we should move on.

PJ can moan about transfer window, but he always seems to be looking at Premiership. Hasn't he learnt his lesson yet? Surely better to buy from lower divisions where clubs need the money.

There must be something fundamentally wrong.
We are in the Championship and there is a rate for playing in this division, we should not pay over the top for sure, but how can they get that far down the road and not know the salary parameters.
Make excuses as long as you wish, but I believe that our club is on avery slippery slope at the moment.

Well, for starters, let's stop treating them as a pair. Offer Boyd a bit more money; give up on Taylor. Divide and conquer.

Regarding Stevenson, I dont understand why we need to 'terminate' his contract. Surely if another team want him, we dont want a fee, and the player wants to go, then he can go on a 'free transfer'?

Terminating his contract will surely involve some cost for ITFC (legal costs etc), even if Stevenson doesnt want a pay off?

Also similar situation with Bullard to MK Dons, if the reason he left was because he really wanted first team football, then why couldnt he go on a free transfer, as opposed to us giving him a big pay off then MK Dons picking him up for free?

Correct me if i'm missing something...

Yet another public relations disaster on the transfer front. Coming so soon after Pompey debacle I wonder how bad our reputation in the game is becoming.

BOOOOOOOOO!!!

Do you seriously think players of this ilk are holding the club to ransom? No!
Sort this out!

How many more targets are there out there for Jewell to find before we end up with 10th best options! It's a joke - get real Town....no we don't want tp pay over the odds but our wage structure seems to be a farce now as so many targets fail. It's not a coincidence!

Money money money! Football has been ruined by greedy owners and greedy agents!

I don't think that all of you Jewell knockers are being fair.

On the other hand, I think that you Clegg knockers are being very fair. In fact kind almost.
Makes me think about what Keane said after he joined the club and then met Calamity for the first time!!

I have supported ITFC for at least 44 years. I have never been so close to giving up. I would never switch allegiance to another club. . . But following our exploits in the transfer market is immensely dis-heartening!!

I wish i had made an offer for my season ticket rather than pay the price they asked for

1. The club shouldn't comment until the deal is done or not done
2. What they pay should be between the club and the players, but should not exceed the club maximum, no matter who they are!
3. Just because you support the club, would you want everyone knowing your wages, terms of contract etc etc......

Lets let the club do what they can, with what they've got, if these two cannot agree terms then move on.

Our season will not be defined by one or two players, it's defined by the whole team/squad

Looks like they are basically gambling on how desperate Town are to sign them to get the best possible deal - it's a big assumption that they'll get a better offer elsewhere in January or next summer. I agree with those who say no to handing them deals which we can't afford. Can't see Brighton being interested in these two when they are able to attract the likes of Wayne Bridge and Thomas Kuszcak.... the type of players who really could help get us to the promised land....

wonder how much bullard was on a week at ipswich and he's now off the books surely if we pay an old has been a decent wage per wek we can afford to pay someone younger and more prolific infront of goal the same

i am sick and tired of reading stories like these and getting my hopes up, from now on i'm not going to believe these stories until jewell announces them officially because too often this transfer window promising deals have fallen flat

10K a week for 3 years is £1,560,000

average earner £26K a year works for 45 years and gets £1,170,000

Footballers need to get in the real world... All this b0lloks about they only have a short carer etc etc.....

Just further opportunity for Clegg to show just how useless he really is

Lol - and on it goes. Yes we shouldn't be held to ransom by agents but this is a problem of the Club's own making ( and not for the first time). Targets identified in Pre-season but no progress made in signing them early summer giving us time to move on if unsuccessful. As for paying off Peters, Bullard and Stevenson - nuts!! Whoevers fault it is needs to hold their hands up for once or better still be moved on. This is just getting desperate.

Oh what a surprise. I am sure everything was going fine until Clegg got involved to discuss personal terms. Booooo. Clegg out!

You can't blame the players, they wont what they feel they're worth & so do we all. We must have had some idea what terms they were after before taking the deal this far.
Our s**t scouting system has again left us desperate at the end of the window!
Jewell Out!!!!!

It looks like town and are fans need to lower our expectations, we obviously are not willing to pay decent wages to sign average championship players, but willing to pay 2million of transfer fee? Surely they must realise that these players are gonna want at least above average wages to sign for a club in the same league? I think we should start looking at lower level players with potential as boyd and taylor came from lower league teams and pay small fee and wages we can afford. The question i cant get my head round is why are they so out of loop when it comes to knowing what players at chamionship level want? i bet these are average wages as well and they could get more and another club?

WorcesterBlue added 13:13 - Aug 30
Saying that think we'd have been overpaying for these two. Judge from Notts county (proper bid) and Coppinger permanent plus Bramble and Wickham on loan.

muhrensleftfoot added 13:13 - Aug 30
The whole thing seems very poor to me. Surely the opening gambit should go along the lines of "We're offerering £x per week, and a x year contract, if that is close to what you want, then you can come & look at the facilities and have a medical". That way, all this nonsense in the press, and the total waste of time & effort would have been saved. Some clubs at our level are obviously prepared to pay the wages these prima donnas want. If ITFC are not prepared to, then we should be looking at good players from lower leagues whose demands will be less.

It is time these players did a reality check.
