Jewell: We Showed Character
Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 18:23

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side showed character to come from behind against Huddersfield but admits he is never confident that they are going to hold on to leads. The Terriers went in front in the first half via Adam Clayton then after the break Luke Chambers and Michael Chopra put the Blues ahead, James Vaughan later equalising for the visitors.

Jewell said: “I don’t think we’re ever all set at 2-1. I think the problem with us is that when we get to that winning situation we don’t seem to have that air of confidence that we can see the game out. That’s been the case for a while here.

“I think we showed good character coming back from a goal down. Huddersfield have got a really good hardworking unit. They’re used to winning, they’ve got a winning mentality.

“I looked at the stats and they’ve won 33 of the last 39 games that they’ve taken the lead in. That just shows that they’re used to winning, which is a credit to the management that’s gone before and the manager that’s here now, and the players.

“It’s never easy to come from a goal behind against anyone but certainly that’s the case against a team which expects to win when they go ahead.”

Overall, he was pleased with the performance: “I thought we mixed it up quite well, Daryl Murphy won all his headers. I thought on chances alone in the first half we at least deserved to go in level.

“Again, they’ve had one corner and scored from it, we’ve had plenty and haven’t. Murph’s had a good chance, balls have flashed across the box.

“I thought there were a lot of pleasing aspects to our game. Obviously, defensively we know we’ve got to improve, not just at the back but our defensive-mindedness when we’re attacking.

“I think you can sum up Ipswich by a 10-second passage in the game. We hit the inside of the post then 10 seconds later we got a penalty - that can’t be right.

“If we don’t score the goal and it comes out of the box, we’ve got to make sure that we’re not that easy to play against. That just sums us up.”

Jewell was pleased with Paul Taylor’s debut: “I think he’s going to be good for us. He’s a bundle of energy. He was absolutely out on his feet out there. It’s been a big week for him, it’s a big move for him but we think we’ve got a really good player.

“We think he can play in a number of positions, he’s bright and we’re pleased with him. I thought both him and Daryl Murphy both did very well today.”

The Blues boss was pleased to get a more positive result after the two losses: “I think what the important thing is that we’ve lost two games in a week, one heavily, one against a team in the division below us, and in the manner we did in extra-time.

“The question marks were there before the game and at half-time. I thought we showed plenty of guts, plenty of decent football as well.

“I thought it was a decent game for both sides, honest, trying to win the game. It was end to end, probably too open for mine and Simon’s liking but I thought it was important to get something out of the game.

“Obviously at 2-2 when they got the penalty, we were staring down a barrel and the keeper’s made a fantastic save.”

Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson agreed with his one-time manager at Bradford: “It was an open game, plenty of chances for both teams. We could have won it, we could have lost it, obviously there was the opportunity to win it at the end with the penalty.

“But, coming here, I would have settled for a draw at the start of the game. We had some good opportunities, but so did they.

“Probably about a fair result, entertaining game, both me and Paul were trying to win the game right from the start to the finish and to end 2-2 both managers will be both satisfied to get a point because we both could have won it, we both could have lost it.”

Yes our defending is average at best but the players individually aren't bad. Smith olympic & world cup experience, chambers a highly regarded championship player & cresswell supporters player of the year, attracting premiership interest. All should be good but under Jewell look a joke, bad management, tactics & coaching.
JEWELL OUT!!!

@PSGBlue Jewell has had over 70 games. How long before before you stop excusing the fact that he inherited a team from Keane ? Here is another stat for you - only us and bottom table Peterborough are waiting for our first home win of the season. Perhaps doesn't say much after 4 games but everyone else has managed at least 1 win. No wonder most fans are losing patience.

For me, the reason we concede goals so easily is not only because we have a young defence but it's the way in which we play, when you have Taylor,Chopra, Martin and Murphy, who lets not forget is a striker by trade we're bound to be exploited at times likewise we are bound to excite and score goals at times. It's so easy to say well it's our 'achilles heel' or something but it's no coincidence, personally I think it's more positional sense, ball retention and tactics, and with our attacking line up there is always going to be space for widemen to create late in the game, we dont really have right and left midfielders we have supporting wingers, and we had a centre back in Ainsley who isn't quite good enough and is having to fill in at right back, we have Cresswell to who is much better pushing on. Saying all this lets not forget we came from behind against Blackburn and scored late on at Watford so lets base things on the season not past seasons.

2 reports in the potteries state that Matthew Upson will sign for 3 months loan next week, Pulis will allow him to come to us but with a call back contract.
Local lad and will bring much needed experience alongside Chambers if true?

I wouldnt say our midfield was poor at all righty, the second goal was yet again terrible defending with it again being possible to drive 2 double decker buses side by side down the flank with the guy being able to make and have a cup of tea before crossing into the middle.

Lets be fair here, the team are coming together in some areas such as midfield and upfront were I think we have strengthened well, just going nowhere in one the most important areas of the team.
However I dont think were a million miles off being perhaps around a top 8 capable of top 6. You dont win or lose the league at the end of August.

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed that in 3 spells with the club, Daryl Murphy has proved time and again that he couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo?

I agree with the posters saying Jewell has to be given time because it's a rebuilding job, but because of transfer 'failings' we continue to be a property in need of renovation as opposed to a finished property that just needs a spruce up and some TLC.

When's the scouse cowboy going to finish the guttering? Or do we get Harry in to give us a quote to re-tarmac the drive?

There really are some very sad people who apparently attend PR. I say apparently because many see a totally different game to me.

Blaming PJ is rubbish. For all anyone knows the players we were supposed to be looking at and lets be fair here 99% were pure speculation in the press and on here. The only two he has actually said we have had a bid accepted were Taylor and his long haired mate.

And why should the club be held to ransome by money grabbing players when at the end of the day the club has to get its house in order to conform with the rules.

Still the whole game is about opinions and it makes it more interesting when people see things differently otherwise it would very boring!

Essexnblue/ and what would be the point of that loan signing then hay? Call back in his contract and no chance of signing him in January! Pointless signing if it happens! JEWELL OUT

Don't know if anybody else was listening to talksport before the game but Adrian Durham (Mr Peterborough) revealed quote "exclusively" that George Boyd would be going to PR on loan now.Does PJ not know CB is not his preferred position?

Jewll this is now your team. You are 18 months into managing our team so if they are not comfortable defending a lead then u also need to look at yourself and your day to day coaching techniques.
A nervous manager makes for a nervous player. Keep coming out and telling the press will only put them under more pressure.
Sort it or move on buddy. I really want you to succeed as i like you but we keep seeing and hearing the same thing.
Ps.........Tommy smith is not up to this level. We desperately need another left sided cb. That could answer our problems. Up the town :-).
