Town Topic: Are Town Fans Overreacting to Bad Start?
Friday, 21st Sep 2012 09:19

Michael Chopra and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas have hit back at Town fans who have been critical of the Blues after a start to the season which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship. Are they right to feel maligned?

Last night, striker Chopra claimed, in a series of tweets which were subsequently deleted after bad-tempered exchanges with a number of fans, that TWTD commenters “don't have a clue about football”, adding: “The proper fans have been amazing, standing by the team that's underperformed last season and at times this season but we will get things right in the end people.

“[Don’t] forget we've only played six games and we are only two wins off the play-offs.”

Emmanuel-Thomas criticised fans on Twitter in pre-season and expressed his frustration with some supporters on the micro-blogging site again last night: “I will stop interacting with fans all together until the sad ones grow up and stop tweeting garbage towards us. Apologies to all the good fans.”

Is Chopra right to feel that fans are overreacting to the first six games of the season? Is JET correct to feel that the criticism of players on Twitter goes too far? Add your thoughts below.

Jimmys Law, much as it pains us many of have stopped going because it is so awful week in week out. This has been going on for many seasons now and if the slide isn't arrested the club will end up falling into the next division at best.

If only it was as simple as that. Crowds are dropping fast, only 16500 for an attractive fixture like Wolves, but that only makes the situation more difficult. If you want to be left sitting in a half empty staduium watching poor and unsuccessful football I suggest you maintain your stance.

Many of us have been Town fans when that made one proud, and not just because the team were successful but also because of the way the whole club functioned. And we liked and respected all the players.

As a TWTD reader I clearly know nothing about football but the chronic inability to hit the target, yet alone score, stood out for me on Weds and I would guess this is due to a crisis of confidence. We know the players are punching under their weight at the mo and it does smack of a man management issue to me.

They've hit the nail on the head..

'underperformed last season and at times this season'

Don't get me wrong, Im fully against people directly, facelessly absuing players on twitter, re the Tommy Smith tweet. I think Smith is brilliant, Im quite proud of what Chopra is acheiving on a personal level, and I want to love JET.. but we are SECOND FROM BOTTOM.. lifelong fans who have paid their ridiculous salaries have the RIGHT to be unhappy at the situation the Town find themselves in..

Yes, those fans directly 'contacting' the players are massively in the wrong.. but Town fans arent overreacting with regards to the bad start.. it is a bad start, and its the clubs fault as a whole, and we have the right to be disappointed..

Perhaps if Chops and JET got their fingers out and started earning their over inflated salaries, which we pay them via over-inflated admission prices, they wouldn't have cause to fight back.

Most of us are disappointed with the start but still look forward in hope - we have played some decent football this season.

Initially, my reaction to "twittergate" was that it would be preferable for JET and Chopra to do their talking on the pitch, but on balance, whereas many posters here are decent and genuine fans, who post genuine comments/thoughts on the forums etc, there is a small minority who aren't. I think this is acknowledged by JET and Chopra in the present context.

In our hour of need, we need a strong sense of purpose and unity between the management, players and fans, a unity which sadly does not seem to be always there. It is up to everyone to do their part, and we can still have a good season. "United we stand".

Yes I think there has been a lot of overreaction and I think its wrong to criticise players directly over Twitter. But I am worried at what is to come following this start. However I think fans criticisms maybe should be directed at Evans and Clegg who for me are destroying ITFC's soul and tradition. Tomorrow is a very big game. COYB

Mixed feelings about this.

I've made comments in the past that players are humans and are likely to read a lot of the comments on here and on Twitter. The response I got was that they should be professional enough for it not to affect them, however I think that's totally naive. If I was at work knowing I was working my best and could overhear chatter about how crap I am I know it would affect my performance no matter how dedicated I feel.

On the other hand I do support free speech and that means accepting the rights of people to hold views that I personally find abhorrent. Social media requires significant self censorship but that isn't realistic for many people. It's an environment equivalent to being a fly on the wall in a bar where you're the topic of conversation and a few people are being very critical. The voices of those who are being supportive get drowned out and only the criticism is remembered. It's also incredibly difficult to not read it - knowing people are talking to you brings the human reaction of wanting to hear it.

What self censorship is needed? Sure, celebrate, get excited, shout at the team, slag them off if you must but don't attack individual players. The manager and chief exec are a bit more fair game as it's in their job descriptions but better to question decisions made than attack the person. Saying so-and-so made a mistake, is having an off day, and so on is fine - but making personal attacks on them isn't.

I did say 'slag them off' as being ok - isn't that a contradiction? I'd say no, as I'm talking about saying things about the team not playing well together (which is often obvious) rather than saying certain players are useless. There are times when criticism of players becomes so obsessive that even the good things they do get ignored by sections of the crowd.

As the crowd is now an online one the training needed is for the players. I'm aware they get some advice on handling social media but it seems this may need to be stepped up. I imagine a more authoritative manager may ban social media completely but I don't think that's prudent. It would make him seem like a strict teacher and push some players away. More than any other social network Twitter is at a tipping point of censorship vs abuse. TWTD has similar problems, for now the only advice is count to 10 and imagine what you're writing was about yourself and think how you would feel.

The fact these comments last night were deleted by the players clearly show they are in the wrong, if not why delete them if they stand by what they said? telling fans to do one, and we dont have a clue about football along with other stuff that is totally out of order etc etc, i personally read some of the tweets and personal messages this morning that was sent directly to Lewis Brown, and its a disgrace. People have the right to there opinion, they pay a lot of money to go home and away to follow the team, and dont expect to be insulted by players because they have touched a nerve. Anybody who was at the match the other night know it was a shocking performance.

Well Mr Chopra and Mr Thomas I have supported the club for years and never heard anything like this I suggest both of you GET OUT OF OUR CLUB and go back to the gambling etc..
I and alot of people on here know nothing about football but we pay good money week in week out to pay your wages you both should be ashamed of yourselfs

CHOPRA
Needs to think that fans have an opinion

This guy has shown he doesn't act like a responsible person
He earns good money for his so called talent
Yet decides to gamble it away and more
Also goes up North with Bullard and arrives back late for training
and then
Gets a summer break in the USA courtesy of ITFC

It's about time he devoted more time to delivering on the pitch, than concentrating on these bleedin' social networking sites

the fans have a right to express their feelings, its the fans who pays their wages, people travel along way to watch matches and dont want to watch a team struggle nearly every game, this team is very short of players and injuries and suspension dont help, the five year plan finishes this season and we havent even come close to promotion and i think marcus evans will lose faith and the attendances shows what the fans also think

Correct me if I am wrong but we pay money to be entertained and that hasn't happened. Those wishing to nod and sit quietly carry on.

For those that cannot make it to PR it doesn't mean that there views should also not be taken into account. They will still be fans long after the management team and players have long since departed.

The fans would not moan if 1. We had a style/plan/philosophy that we stick with 2. PJ would learn from his mistakes. 3 Players play with pride and passion and give 100%.

When was the last time we played and entertained for a full 90+ minutes.

It should also not be lost on the players that TWTD contributors have played football at various levels including ex-pros.

Makes me laugh that the players want your adulation but start bleating when criticism comes there way. Yes, some are less articulate, but do it on the pitch and it will stop - even a footballer can work that one out!

When the Town team collectively seen incapable of hitting a cows arse with a banjo it seems somewhat churlish for any of them to criticise the supporters who pay their inflated and judged by recent performances unearned wages.

fans have a right to criticize after all its the fans who in the end pay wages...however you can understand the fans frustration in the lack of progress being made.....but you cant put the blame solely on players after all they are only following PJs instructions

Sorry but when i have paid shed loads of very hard earned money to watch players, who quite frankly are paid each year what most of us humble fans can only dream of. I think i am entitled to voice an opinion on what i am watching don't you?
If i spent £33 for a meal and was served up some absolute rubbish would i walk away happy and couldnt wait to come back again? NOPE!
Chopra was bailed out big time by the club so he needs to keep it shut!
If i ran up massive gambling debts do you think Mr Chopra that my employer would help me out and settle up my debts???
Its about time these overpaid footballers started living in the real world and started seeing the world from our side of the fence!
Times are hard, money is tight, Some fans save all year and make cutbacks so they can afford a season ticket, so i think as fans we have a right to complain if we don't like what we see.
We will see Chopra if you score the 25+ goals this season that you claim you will!
Sorry for moaning fellow fans but i think as fans of itfc we have been through a lot of false hopes and promises each season and all the spin, hype, talk, post match dribble, etc is wearing a little thin.
Time for all those at ITFC to start walking the walk instead of talking the talk every bloody five minutes.
COYB!

Good question and on balance the answer is no as the rot has been setting in ever since Magic got the boot and this summer's transfer dealings and early season treatment of Hyam in particular mean we have every righ to question what is happening. However, this is the forum to have debate about things ITFC not Tw*tter and if you carry on posting and/or reading on that you get what you ask for whether fan or player - grow up lads!

What I would ask Phil is that you don't post any of the banal rubbish from Tw*tter on here and I suggest fans and players alike follow the same plan. There is a reason many of us don't use it and this is a classic example.

Just who the hell does Chopra think he is!
This club bailed you out Chopra! You also had a lovely summer break in th usa all paid for by ITFC.
Also does JET think he is that good? from what i have seen from jet so far is all mouth and no action! Rubbish to put it mildly!
When these players start doing what they are paid thousands a week to do is maybe when us paying fans will get off their cases!

If we were only reacting to a bad start to the season, then yes there has been some over reaction. However its much deeper than that. We are reacting to a continuing decline in performance and results which goes back to last season and beyond. Remember the embarrassing "lap of honour" at the end of last season. That was bad and its been downhill since then.
Also we have not addressed some of the problems which have been longstanding eg Defence and ends of contract etc. Fans are entitled to react to that.
Finally more of the players could at least show some passion when playing. I went on Weds V Wolves after going on Sat to see Mansfield V Braintree. There whilst the quality of football was not as good at least every player on both sides tried and kept running for the whole game. Braintree going a goal down meant they tried to fight back. Didn't see that on Weds and when we went 2 down it was just a matter of playing out time. No urgency no passion. Fans are entitled to react to that.

Yeah quite right it would have caused major issues, hence why he has taken it off, so now fans are expected to pay there money, and watch dross like that, and be told to do one by the player in question, because he told the player the performance lacked passion and fight? did you go to the game? because from where i was sitting and listening to many fans comments after the game they all reiterated the same opinion, the only difference with this was he got to tell the player it was unacceptable, probably no different to what the manager told them at half time & full time? do you reckon he told Jewell to do one too???

A year ago, and for longer, it seemed the majority of fans wanted to see a younger team that we could use to build. And even claimed that a bit of short-term pain would be worthwhile. I never believed they'd accept even the odd defeat, let alone a process of learning and developing, and sadly I seem to have been proved right.
Anyone with eyes and who actually bothers going to matches will have seen some very, very good football, keeping the ball on the ground and trying to do the right things. We are creating chances, just not taking them.
Whether PJ is going to turn it around I don't know, but I do believe that this group of players is good enough to be challenging towards the top of this league, given a bit of confidence and a bit of luck.
Supporters should try supporting for a change. It just might lift the team and do a bit of good.

Im a season ticket holder in the Bobby Robson Upper....on Wednesday i spoke to two people who paid on the night!...What did they get for their £67...and what could they have got spending that money elsewhere?
I remained optimistic because we were playing quite well....but that all disappeared out of the window against Wolves...who themselves looked very ordinary!
Im also not one to jump on the bandwagon and get on Jewells back but one thing has stuck in my throat more than anything recently....why did he let Delaney go when he had not got a replacement...i was never a Delaney fan but to me that was shocking management....
