Town Topic: Are Town Fans Overreacting to Bad Start?
Friday, 21st Sep 2012 09:19

Michael Chopra and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas have hit back at Town fans who have been critical of the Blues after a start to the season which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship. Are they right to feel maligned?

Last night, striker Chopra claimed, in a series of tweets which were subsequently deleted after bad-tempered exchanges with a number of fans, that TWTD commenters “don't have a clue about football”, adding: “The proper fans have been amazing, standing by the team that's underperformed last season and at times this season but we will get things right in the end people.

“[Don’t] forget we've only played six games and we are only two wins off the play-offs.”

Emmanuel-Thomas criticised fans on Twitter in pre-season and expressed his frustration with some supporters on the micro-blogging site again last night: “I will stop interacting with fans all together until the sad ones grow up and stop tweeting garbage towards us. Apologies to all the good fans.”

Is Chopra right to feel that fans are overreacting to the first six games of the season? Is JET correct to feel that the criticism of players on Twitter goes too far? Add your thoughts below.

As with most on here I totally agree that we are not over reacting to a bad start this season ,were fed up putting up with the crap being played by over paid players for the past four years who dont care about this club and only how much they can get from it,Chopra should remember who pays his wages and who bailed him out,as the saying goes "Dont bite the hand that feeds you"Do your talking on the pitch Chopra and Jet and show as much effort on there as you do on Twitter and we wont be in this mess

To all those saying that fans moaning are just the 'we want promotion now' fans, I think to be more correct they are the 'we dont want to get relegated' fans? as for Chopra and JET , if this club goes down the pan when you move onto your next club will you tweet with them fans? we as Ipswich fans cant move on because Ipswich is OUR club and if you dont like it then f,ck off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not that you will be missed LOL Chopra's favourite word 'missed'?

Overall Chopra and JET should be grateful they are playing for Ipswich.

If the fans of many other clubs had been subjected to the years of false promises/garbage from Clegg/Evans plus the dross actually on the pitch served up by a succession of clueless managers there would have been rioting in the streets by now never mind some criticism on Twitter!!

I have been a town fan man and boy from standing on an upturned milk crate as a boy to catching the sudbury bus with school friends to teenage/20's years having a few beers in the north stand to the present day. yes I was lucky enough to catch the Rosbon reign but I also spent cold november nights watching with less than 10,000 fans in the Duncan years So I have seen my fair share of the ups and downs of my beloved club. Every fan has their right to have an opinion and we might not all agree with each other but hey that's life. life is full of opinions. I don't however condone personal attacks on twitter. we can all come on here and voice our opinions and have a bit of banter that's what football is all about however I think some people need to get a sense of humour. . I think that it's not just a reaction to the start of this season but the decline of our club in the last few years that frustrates fans with the 5 year plan and broken promises we are no further forward now than we were before ME bought the club. however I do believe this is partly due to so called smaller clubs progressing where we have stood still as opposed to us moving backwards. I think in many respects we are a victim of our own past glory and as fans we have high expectations. To say we have no knowledge of football is a bit of an insult to all the hard working, paying loyal fans out there 16,000 for a midweek game shows the support is still there. On seconds thoughts we obviously don't know anything about football as we support town(that's a joke btw). The season is only 6 games old but do we not keep saying this year in year out and personally I think it's just not acceptable. Players need to be able to take criticism and praise equally it's part and parcel of your very well paid jobs. The reason we react the way we do is because we love our club and it pains us to see it in such a state. Blue till I die onwards and upwards. peace out ps JET I was playing football when you were still dropping no.2 bombs in your nappy!!

Chopra did not moan when he was gambling and we applaued him at matches. The fans have the right to say how we feel. I will say it to his face on the middle of the pitch he he want

Think Chops and Jet are having a laugh at our expense. Better think again chaps we pay some of your wages to perform as professional footballers .Grow up start acting like professionals and make an effort .Ditch the tweeting and start scoring .Management also to blame allowing players to attack supporters with drivel we all need to man up and start acting like professionals players management and supporters alike.Clegg issue a statement and sort this out you are technically the CEO lets have some direction for once instead of hiding behind Jewells waffle. Start by banning the tweets we can live without them , we just want the team to be enthusiastic and passionate and earning their money.

Chops -

> We've paid off your gambling debts.
> Helped you with your addiction for gambling
> Sent you to a health farm the other side of the world to get fit
> Supported you throughout at away grounds
> Given your carrer a fresh start

YOU DARE CRITICISE US? Who do you think is paying for most of that? US!! Do one...

They should both be thrown out of the club with immediate effect : the same that should have happened to Rooney with England.

What a joke for Chopra to criticizing us, he woud have not been signed by any other Town manager apart form Keane - and look how well he did!!!! as for JET he is having a laugh if he thinks he can play football ! We may see the odd flash of maybe a rasping shot and the odd run but is far from enough.
This is one of our poorest teams for a very long while, we have some decent youngsters but they are rarely given a proper chance, what exactly has Hyam done wrong?
I read an earlier comment about Lyall and that his team was poor may I remind that person that we were promoted as champions, on a shoestring of a budget!!
We now lie second from bottom and to be honest I can not see Jewell sorting this out, he is negative (one player up front at home on numerous occasions), saying we are not a big club, we know we are not a big club but we are a club with a proud history, two of the most successful England managers, UEFA cup winners, Div 1 champions FA cup I can go on, his tactics leave a lot to be desired, what we need is a change again unfortunately, not just the manager, unless there is drastic changes made it is looking grim

I would like to see both players disciplined and fined for disrespect towards their wage-payers ( i.e. us ). Chopra, a week's salary would be fine please, mate. I'll send you my email address and bank account details. Oh, and there's one thing I do know about football. The team that scores the most goals wins.

Wouldn't a better question be:

Are Ipswich fans overreacting to 11 years of Championship football, with no prospect of promotion and 5 seasons without getting near the play offs, whilst clubs of a similar or lesser size and fan base like Swansea, Blackpool, Norwich, Middlesboro, Wolves, Hull and Stoke are able to build promotion challenging squads on similar turnover whilst the management of the club, when they do deign to address the fans who pay their wages/loan stock interest payments, witter on, like Nero with Rome burning around them, about how nice the newly painted turnstiles look when what we would like to hear is that they take responsibility for this shambles and don't just look to hide behind the financial fair play rules (that come into effect in two years anyway) when trying to explain the failure to secure badly needed replacements of players let go on a Bosman oh and by the way why have we only got two centre backs, one of whom got a proper canning off Sigurdarson on Wednesday night and who the hell was he marking anyway when he conceded the own goal?

Although I admit this is a bit of a leading question and most people would have given up reading before getting to the end and gone back to trawling the net for pictures of Kate Middleton without her top on.

Funny thing about watching football is that its very different to actually playing in the game for starters when your in the Stand you can probably see who is where on the pitch at all times and think why on earth didn't he pass it or do that etc...

then theres the actual fitness that's involved running turning focusing on what's happening in the game…

a lot of people forget that the team tactics of movement on the pitch is extremely strict for example when one player moves up the pitch the player behind has to take up a certain position behind and he must remember exactly what his job is in a lot of different senario and in training and in player briefing theres a lot of information about opposing players that as a player you must digest and remember….just watch when a sub comes on the manger is giving him short hand commands to pass to the team that they must all understand…no it not rocket science but at this level the boys have to use there grey matter as well.

its not a simple as it looks !!

then there's changes in formations and or substitutions that they have to remember what there role is when this happens add on top of that performing in front of a tense crowd and then there's the back room politics that goes on i.e. slugging your guts out for very little appreciation from the Gaffer players slaggin you off if you done something wrong grrrr etc…

its not all about money but as a professional footballer you want to be the best you can and egos do come into it which is exactly why people like that do well in sport you have to have one!!!

that is all in the days work of a pro footballer…

.so yes I think Chops is probably right that we don't know football the way a pro does

but he has to understand and I'm sure he does that with the limited knowledge we do have and the passion for success we want there's going to be some questions asked (quite rightly ) that need to be answered I don't think he needs Media training to know this but we are all intitled to let of steam both player and fan …its healthy and I think it can be a dangerous thing tweeting when you get a rush of blood to the head but is great for us fans to feel like we can talk to our team...

Its not the players that are to blame.... its the slow almost static tactically inept way in which the last 2 managers get our team to play.... how jewel can leave Hyam out and replace him with a clearly unfit slow Daw. The corner flag had more movement than him!!and that Martin is rubbish on the wing but fantastic in the middle... But hey ho were just a bunch of clueless supporters who don t understand football.. there use to be 25000 of us but now there are 16000 really stupid ones left.... im one of them.. and my missus knows it!!!

yes we probably are overreacting but we have been in this division for far to long (longer than any other team in the championship) and even tho we will support itfc either good or bad its only natural for us to be upset with the form we have had since when the dark lord r k took over and its no better now with p j in charge but i dont know why but i feel we are due to have a dose of good form and i feel we can still make at least top 10 this season and maybe just maybe top 6 i mean look how bad reading started off last season

I agree with the players. There's a ridiculous amount of over-reaction on this site to a few losses (or to a few victories, or a new signing, for that matter). We need to get a bit of perspective.
