Burley Leaves Apollon
Friday, 21st Sep 2012 12:08

Former Blues boss George Burley has parted company with Cypriot side Apollon Limassol by mutual consent. The 56-year-old only took over as head coach in May.

With the season in Cyprus only two games old - one win, one defeat - Nicodemos Papavasiliou has taken over.

Yes the man was a legend both as a player and a manager and deserves all our respect, but please do not let the heart overrule the head! He joined as manager at the end of 1994 when he was young and hungry. He promoted us in 2000, we had one fantastic season followed by relegation. It is almost 10 years to the day since he departed and he hasn't exactly set the world alight since. ''Never go back' as the saying goes! Jewell might not be the answer so lets hope for a young and hungry Burley type!

I'd be happy with George Burley with Matt Holland learning his stuff 2 total legends at different ends of the age spectrum both with a clue about how the game should be played. It surely could'nt be any worse than what we have now.

Tractamatt - how do you know Matt Holland would make a manager or even wants to be one? Great players invariably can't manage! Roy Keane, Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Peter Shilton etc etc

Got to agree with Doctor Albran I am afraid. There is a long list of managers who have returned to clubs and failed to achieve the same success as first time.

I would rather remember GB for being a great player, for getting us to the Premiership and a couple of points off a Champions League position; than to see him come back here to fail and be booed out of the club.

@Tractamatt "could'nt be any worse than what we have now"

Joe Royle delivered play-offs 2 seasons running and he wasn't good enough for some.
Magilton fell just shy of the play-offs 2 seasons running and wasn't good enough for many.
Keane was a lunatic taskmaster and wasn't good enough for most.
Jewell is "past it" and "yesterday's man" who apparently isn't good enough for anyone.

Be careful what you wish for. Burley is widely considered to have been a massive failure in his last two jobs in British football and has had rocky relationships and off-field problems at several others, yet I'm the idiot for suggesting he wouldn't be the answer?

I'll say it again; Chopra is right, most of you haven't got a clue.

2 things 1, Hangcockingoal Im not sure but has he not already taken his coaching coarses wich I'm sure he would'nt have done unless he wants to get into managing 2, Souper Jim I have not said you are an idiot or implied it, My point is that George Burley WOULD be an IMPROVEMENT over what we have now and before anybody chimes in with "Who would'nt be" Jewells replacement must be a significant improvement or there is no point.Harry Redknapp wont happen , Paul Sturrock not good enough no better than jewell, Mick Mcarthy won't be able to work with our board so will walk, Phil Brown no just no,who does that leave? Also all consider this maybe the managers job at Ipswich Town is now considered a poison chalice so if George Wants it to carry on where he left of or to go one better who am I you or anyone who calls themselves a fan of Ipswich Town football club to not want that we (I.T.F.C.) ARE IN THE MIRE we can do worse than give a legend another chance.COYB

Great player, great Manager but unfortunately I am one of these people who think players/Managers should never go back, its just never the same and usually the expectations are through the roof as fans invariably think it will be like the good old days.

Agree with you happybeingblue,Billy Davies for me is a no-brainer..an intelligent manager and won't take any nonsense..I hope Evans/Clegg have got him on their radar,if not then someone needs to get the idea across.

Changing the manager alone has worked for us so well since GB left Ipswich. I'm sorry to say this but I think the problems at Ipswich stem from the top, if the club isn't being run right then it doesn't matter who the manager is. It should have been Curbishley for me and still is if we have to change though.

what must Joe Royle think about all the money that Magilton, Keane and jewell have wasted?. if he had a quarter of what has been spent he would have got us promoted.
