Clegg: Harry Speculation Laughable
Tuesday, 25th Sep 2012 15:46

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has dismissed weekend speculation that Harry Redknapp was set to take over as manager of the Blues as “laughable”. Clegg says he is confident that current boss Paul Jewell can turn things around despite the disappointing start which sees Town in 23rd in the Championship.

Reports prior to kick-off on Saturday claimed that some bookmakers had suspended betting on Redknapp joining the Blues, although at least one of those cited was still offering odds of 20-1 at the time.

Clegg, speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, says that there is nothing in claims that Redknapp — or any other boss — has been talked to about the Town job: “I can absolutely assure you that there have been no conversations with any other managers. The stuff about Harry is laughable really.

“People put two and two together and made about 27. Harry went out [to the Sir Bobby Robson Classic golf tournament in Portugal in the summer] as part of the Ipswich Town team. He’s done that in previous years. It’s not something we’ve made a big shout about, but all of a sudden people see Marcus and Harry together.

“Marcus and Harry have known each other for a number of years and it’s well known that he is one of the many people that Marcus consults with from the football family when making decisions.”

The chief executive says he is confident that Jewell can get the Blues moving in the right direction: “No doubts at all [that Paul is the man for the job].

“He’s the manager and it’s business as usual. We’re desperately trying to turn this situation around. Paul’s more conscious than most people in terms of what needs to happen.

“He’s a man who puts huge pressure on himself and I’m confident that we are going to turn this season around.”

However, he admits that if things don’t improve, a change would eventually be made: “We live in a dynamic and very fluid environment and of course there’s a tipping point.

“There’s a tipping point that comes with every manager but I’m not going to tell you when that tipping point is because it will depend on a number of factors which have to be taken into account as we go down this particular road.

“I continue to have every confidence in Paul and his ability to turn things around, and I hope that he will do.”

Whatever Clegg comes out with means Ziltch to me

He has as much personality as a SLUG, and just as Slimey

I wish Evans would get RID of him as he is definitely just someone who cannot connect with the supporters of this club

He must be on a ridiculous salary to stick it out as this is no glamour post for him...

He didn't run with the Olympic flame when it came here (Fear of possible ridicule and jeering perhaps)
but for some unexplained reason did it I believe around Manchester way...
(Too lazy to check the correct place)

Some of the smallest creatures can be the most poisonous
And he certainly fits that description

Like I said... He can only be here for the money, as this club isn't in his heart and never will be.

Why is it that people can't post comments without having to resort to personally insulting statements or swearing. Passion & alternative points of view are one thing, but not being able to make a point without having to resort to expletives is another. Do people believe it makes their posts more relevant ? Come on fans lets be more eliquent

Yawn...it feels like we are a never ending roundabout. I'm kind of bored of the 'he'll turn it round' bobbins. Every season its the same. Can't we just get someone in who doesn't have to 'turn it round' every couple of months.
I was all for giving PJ time last season but have lost all faith. We are not improving, and none of the issues that should have been sorted ages ago have actually been sorted. I'm really starting not to care anymore which I never thought I'd feel like. But no entertainment, no results, no defence, no attack. It's proving hard to stick with.

Must admit reading Clegg doesnt make you warm to him does he!

He first of all says "pj will definately be in charge saturday" in others words he has a game to save his job (ironic as same fixture as when he did last season).

He calls the Redknapp rumours "laughable" which, if you will forgive me a little self indulgence, I have maintained all week if you read my posts.

But he then ends it by talking about "tipping points" and not telling us when that tipping point will be.

What the hell does pj or the fans make out of all that???

He has no class and always demonstrates in my opinion that he is not and Ipswich or football man who is out of his depth.

I have sympathy for pj having to deal with him day i day out, no wonder no one will sign for us dealing with him.

The only thing thats "laughable" about this story is that Clegg thinks Jewell can "turn it around"...... we are sinking without a trace......

So there is a tipping point when PJ will be shown the door. Let's start a book to determine at what point that will be. Has PJ been given a set number of games to turn things round? Has he been given a points target (a la Steve Kean)? Has Russell Grant been consulted about the astrological consequences? Is SC waiting for guidance in a dream?

Perhaps those that advocate more time for PJ can explain precisely what the difference is between the situation now and that at the time when RK was sacked.

All. Focus on what you can control and not what you can't. The facts are that under PJ we have shipped an average of 2.5 goals a game, the team cannot score before half time, are disjointed and lack belief. Knowing all of that and you can back Barnsley at around 11/8 for Saturday, having themselves wapped Birmingham 5-0 last week.

It is not lost that 10months on from our last journey to Barnsley PJ needs to win to keep his job, I can't think that lightning will strike twice.

If mr evans is serious about wanting ipswich to be in the premiership any time soon he needs to step up to the plate and admit he has cocked up, MAJORLY. Get rid of clegg and jewell NOW. Bring someone with years of football knowledge in to run the club, someone who will have the respect of other people around football. Manager wise, I would like to see someone like alan curbishley bought in. He has the knowledge and ability to build a club from top to bottom as he did at charlton. Then we can forget about this embarrassment of a management team we have in place now.

Clegg was a star of last of the summer wine , Jewel is a regal stone. If you put the two together you get absolutely nothing at all. Which is what we have .

More meaningless spin and platitudes from the pathetic Clegg. The man is an absolute muppet.

2010/2011 - Preston relegated after 11 seasons in the championship

2011/2012 - Coventry relegated after 11 seasons in the championship

2012/2013 - Ipswich's 11th season in the championship.

At the time of their relegations both Preston and Coventry were the longest serving championship team and we took over that longest serving championship team mantle from Coventry. Normally I would not be overly bothered by such a trend, but we are so rudderless on and off the pitch at the moment, that this stat is beginning to cause me concern.

this is not what people wanted to here. Clegg, if you think its laughable perhaps you will also see it as laughable when the fans vote with their feet and desert the terraces as we slide further and further into the mire ,Jewell is a disaster, that you and Marcus Evans cant see that is truly worrying .

Clegg won't be laughing when fans vote with their feet and fail to attend the already rip off prices that is Portman Road.

Clegg Out.

This is such a shame- it shows how out of touch Clegg is and what a poor communicator he is. If he understood half of what Town fans are feeling right now, he'd a) have spoken out sooner and b)not ridiculed them by describing things as laughable. I think we should all sit together one Saturday home game- regardless of where are seats are to show the ground half empty. Then would he and Evens get the message???
