Jewell: Players Giving Me Everything They've Got
Wednesday, 3rd Oct 2012 06:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell says last night’s performance in the 1-1 draw at Brighton illustrates that the players are still giving him everything they’ve got even if he’s been made fully aware that he’s not flavour of the month with all supporters at present.

Speaking after last night’s game, Jewell said: “I’m a big boy, I’ve been around the block before and I know what’s going on.

"A guy told me to resign as I got off the coach today. It was quite interesting because he told me to resign after I’d turned round the corner. I thought that it was really brave of him, and I told him.

“But I understand that’s the way people are at the moment. However, you can see that the players are giving everything they’ve got.

“When that’s in question, when the players aren’t giving everything they’ve got, that’s when you need to move on. But I don’t think the players, even in the defeats we’ve had when we haven’t played great, I don’t think they’ve ever thrown the towel in.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s live Sky game (KO 5.20pm) against Cardiff — who took over from Brighton at the top of the Championship last night - the Blues boss, whose side are without a win in eight games and haven’t won at home since March 31st, is looking for his team to end those runs: “It’s a big game. Every game in this league is difficult in its own way.

"Cardiff have spent a lot of money, as a lot of clubs in this league have, and they’re going to expect to be up the top.

“We’ve got to try and match them and hopefully we can put on a decent show for our home supporters because our home results haven’t been what we’ve wanted, even though I think there have been some decent performances.

“Even in the Wolves game we created a host of opportunities, but we got punished for not taking them.”

Brighton boss Gus Poyet says opposition teams are beginning to come to the Amex Stadium with the same gameplan: "I'm starting to think everybody is rating us higher than we are.

“They rate us as a top team in this division and come here with a plan, to nick a goal and defend. That makes us put in all the effort. It becomes all about us and you need quality for that.

"But we need to get used to that because it is going to be the plan for every team that comes to the Amex.

"I can't ask for more. We took risks, we played with one defender and went for the win. It worked for Birmingham and it nearly worked for Ipswich, so credit to them."

I know that this isn't going to win me any friends on here and yet this is an open forum and so I need to get this off my chest...

Of course I am glad that we get a point away at Brighton - that's a good result for pretty much ANY team in this league. It'd be obtuse and wrong to start wanting your own team to lose in order to get rid of a manager!!

What troubles me though is that the odd 'good' result or not - our team seems to have deeper long-term problems that aren't going to be resolved by people 'being positive' or 'getting behind the team'!

Ipswich Town Football Club are, in my humble opinion, very overdue a complete overhaul so that we can start again from the bottom up with a new and strong and long-term foundation and plan for the future.

For as many seasons as I care to remember we have limped along on an ad hoc, lets-see-how-it-turns-out basis and we're paying the price of this in random performances, dwindling crowds and an increasing sense that things are profoundly wrong with our club.

A couple of wins in the midst of yet another chaotic and unpredictable season just isn't good enough.

Root and branch reform is needed and we'll need to be patient to see it through. I am sick and tired of the Random Managers we get here, either on the way up with us as a stepping stone (that didn't quite work did it Keane?) or on the way sideways with another shockingly inept performance of mediocrity (that's working quite nicely isn't it Mr Jewell and yes I'd be willing to say that to your face! lol).

Anyway, thanks for allowing me to let off steam. I love this club - always have, always will.

I just feel very, very disillusioned and have a deep, gnawing sense that it's going to get a LOT worse before it gets better...

Here's to some reality and to a brighter day.

COYB!!!

i've been anti jewell since day one but have to say he and the players did little wrong last night. we were playing away to a side at the top of the division after a really poor run of results and yet we deserved the draw we got. pj clearly hasn't lost the dressing room but surely he must play 2 up front on saturday and other home games as chopra looks lost on his own. murphy was my MOM but only just ahead of carlos. drury very quiet for me throughout the game, cresswell still not on last years form but ndaw, loach, higginbotham and chambers all look like good additions to last years team.

Have to agree maybe not having a home win for so long could be the players feel the pressure of the fans on their backs and seeing banners with Jewell out.

Have to say I worry about the mind set of some fans when they go to a game and hurle abuse at Paul Jewell as he steps off the bus.

Don't you go to watch football or am I wrong , Wright ,Leadbitter, Miller all took stick from the crowd nearly ever game.

Delaney was another taking stick from so called fans on here and in the crowd yet he is playing really well at Palace, wonder if it because the fans get behind him at Palace don't know.

When the team is down that's when you need the fans

Have to say.... He is digging in !! And yes the team did seem to be well up for last night.

We have a good record against Cardiff, which may bode well for the weekend.

Maybe PJ will be here for some time afterall.

Im not jewells biggest fan and for me i think he should go once we find a good replacement, however, no matter how you feel, its a disgrace and embarrassment to see him getting abuse of some fans whilst going through town and getting off the bus, especially when that person cant even say it to him.

"PRAT" It takes one to know one. If you are a fan you are the sort we could do without. If you never have anything constructive to say why don't you clear off this site. I am pretty sure you weren't at last night's game - in fact I wouldn't be surprised if you never are at a game.

So the players are giving all they have got. That much is self evident. The results can only mean one thing. We haven't got the right players. Our wages budget is 6million were as Wolves is 22million- according to TWTD. Yes Wolves have the parachute payments etc, but the reality is very very simple if you are not paying the money you will NOT get the best or better players. PJ wasted last years transfer budget on a bunch of journey men leaving this year with no money for improvement. We were unable to attract players of any calibre from any lower league clubs or indeed those out of work guys at Portsmouth. So why has this come about? Personally I have always said that the team is not just the guys on the pitch but the executive team who sort out the contracts and the likes. The lack of talent and the constant failure to sign players surely must start to raise questions on the suitability of those persons responsible for that aspect of the business, after all let us be in no doubt unless Marcus Evans has won the euro millions a few times this year ITFC is a business and when business loose money, revenue and fail to perform something must change. In our case I strongly believe the change is not PJ but the executive approach to the business of football.

Who pays good money to travel all the way to Brighton on a tuesday night to shout at our manager BEFORE the game in which we got a really positive result. Some people have got a screw loose! Hoping for a nice home win on saturday, i'm saving all my abuse for Craig Bellamy not PJ! COYB!!

I bet Bluey123 was the guy who told Jewell to resign (after he turned the corner) lol, anyway onto more important matters, I listened to the game last night as I couldnt make it to the game and one thing kinda stuck out for me, late in the second half it sounded like we invited brighton to attack us until with a little bit of luck they scored the equaliser. It seems like this happens to often, I dont have a solution but I hope PJ does it could be the diffrance between one point and all three.

Good result and performance last night from the team.

Its about time JET has started to perfrom. He is a key player for us if we want to do well this season. Him & Martin. If he and the other lads can keep putting in good performances then the results will follow!

This time last season we would have capitulated having conceded a goal. Now we are more hardened and PJ deserves credit for getting in Loach, Chambers, N'Daw and Higgingbotham to help us improve that area. Hewitt is still to come back too.

I can see definite improvements and I expect to further improvements as the team progresses.

@ravenblue52

I agreed teams have worked out that we will sit back if they pile on pressure but are not good enough to keep them out. The obvious solution would seem to be to keep pressing forward rather than sitting in.

Sounds simple I know, but generally football is a simple game over complicated by tinkering idiots (from UEFA down!)

After Clegg gave Jewell the vote of confidence last week, it effectively means he had three games to save his job.

If he loses on Saturday, in front of the Sky TV Camera's then he will be dismissed. Simple as.

After ten games, you know exactly how the season is going to pan out - our's looks like a fight against relegation. The players may be giving everything, but they are simply not good enough - the table does not lie.

I hate seeing money being wasted changing staff/managers all the time. The next appointment has to be the right one.

I was speaking to a Blackburn fan yesterday - and basically everything that has happened to them since the Venky's took over has happened to Town - for some reason, we are polite and do not shout for Jewell to go before the game or want "Evans out" on banners. That may change if we get the thrashing i suspect is coming our way.

@Dog - If our fans showed any of the antics that the Blackburn 'fans' did for 18 months then i'd lose so much respect for our club. Blackburn fans were a disgrace, everyone in football knows that. I'd rather be a respected club in the bottom half than a joke club with horrible supporters in the top.
