Davis Linked With Town Return
Wednesday, 21st Nov 2012 10:57

Town want former keeper Kelvin Davis to return to Portman Road, according to a report in one of this morning’s tabloids. The 36-year-old, who is currently out of favour at Southampton, enjoyed a successful spell with the Blues between 2003 and 2005.

Boss Mick McCarthy is said to want to sign Davis on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal in January.

Bedford-born Davis began his career with Luton Town, during which he spent time on loan at Torquay and Hartlepool. He joined Wimbledon in 1999 before moving to the Blues for £600,000 in the summer of 2003 with the Dons in financial trouble.

After Town lost out in the play-offs to West Ham for the second year in succession, Davis was sold to Sunderland for £1.25 million in the summer of 2005.

Current Blues manager McCarthy took over as manager at the Stadium of Light in March 2006 and Davis was a regular in his side as the Wearsiders dropped into the Championship.

However, it had been an unhappy spell in the North-East for the 6ft 1in tall keeper and he moved on to Southampton that summer for £2 million.

Last season, Davis was named in the PFA's Championship Team of the Year - he had been in the League One XIs in the previous two seasons - as he helped the Saints back into the Premier League.

He started the campaign as their number one but lost his place after their 6-1 thumping to Arsenal in September, although he has appeared once since then, in the 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Leeds.

Town moving for an experienced permanent keeper would be little surprise with loanee Stephen Henderson currently the number one ahead of Scott Loach, 24, who was dropped by previous boss Paul Jewell having signed for £150,000 from Watford in the summer.

Davis, who made 93 appearances while with the Blues, is well-known to Town keeper-coach Malcolm Webster from his time at Portman Road and also under George Burley’s management early on in his six years with the Saints.

best keeper we've had here in my lifetime. Love to see him back

MM is very shrewd. Yes Kelvin is 36. Young enough for a keeper. Henderson has stated Hammers is his club hence no loyalty. Kelvin popular at portman road. Out of favour at southampton. Plenty of experience to help Scott Mature to become our NO .1 in time. Great if we can get this done.

Yes totally agree that Kelvin is the best keeper seen in recent times at PR,sign him up ASAP and send the dreadful Henderson back to West Ham .

Taylor incident.

This club has a worrying strike force. Chopra, Taylor and the new boyBennett. Worrying. Thanks heavens for DJ. Looks like we need some life coaches at the club as well.

Kelvin is without a doubt a good keeper but certainly not better than Wright in our promotion season or 1st year back in Premiership where he was outstanding getting a big club move and England cap ,miss placed nostalgia creeping in again for the second time today .
Davis has failed badly in both his attempts to play in the premier league showing his real level of ability ,would rather stick with Loach and bring him on for years to come

here we go again, the big name syndrome. sure davis was a good keeper in his day but no longer. I have seen the howlers he has let in for southampton. sorry but now over the hill. ask yourself why else isn't he playing for them? outfielders can get away with dropping into a lower league but goalies have to be good always, no matter what league. how many more are we going to try? henderson loach alb mccarthy stockman begovic...

So if this happens another loan.....then if he signs bye bye to Scott Loach! Ipswich are horribly turning into a laughing stock! God help us against P'Boro.

I think nostalgia is clouding peoples judgement here. Davis was a solid keeper for us but not much more, I'd probably put Neil Alexander ahead of KD. Bringing Davis back isn't the answer, we need to get behind Loach and give him a proper run in the team - at 24 and as things stand he is the long-term No.1 keeper for ITFC

Davis has done his time at our club, and was not as fantastic as some are suggesting.. would be decent if we had the ability to find a keeper worth hir salt from league 1 or 2 : /

A very good loan signing in my opinion. Goalies reach their peak when they hit 30. Yes he is 36, but from what i saw of Southampton on the box this season he made some good saves and was let down by a naive defence at premier level. He will do a good job here - look at the best goalkeepers in the Premiership Cech, Schwarzer and Friedel - all over 30 and consistently good.

As for Ipswich players - they have no desire. After watching the most inept performance against Swansea at home (we lost 3-0 and it could have been far worse), i then made the mistake of going to the Spread Eagle - and seeing a "well covered" striker drinking a few pints of Guiness - whilst the Pub shouted his name. Pathetic. He would be better off getting to the Gym!!!. As would I.

Get him please, I've always rated him and was most disappointed when we sold him, a great keeper, with sharp reactions.

Yes please, best keeper we've had in ten years (maybe Alexander a close second) and as keepers are proving, 36 is entering a period where he could well still have 3-5 years left in him. Sign him up and send Henderson back.

Alexander was better IMO .. realise we are hanging back on opening up the Taylor incident.. nothing will surprise me anymore, and anticipate more embarrassment from our glorious squad.. wake up guys and prove the likes of me wrong! : /

Davis , better than Henderson but another loan ? Would rather risk Loach and give him some games and get a permanent keeper in January if needed . More to the point any news on Wellens ? With Zamora out for 3 months can we keep DJ ? iF P.T. was in a brawl what a way to recover from injury ?!? Our strikers do not seem to want to repay the faith we have shown in them . I wonder what clauses they have in their contract about behaviour off the pitch ? Its time to fine or suspend these players that enjoy themselves off the pitch and do very little on it .Roll on the AGM time for some serious action it has to start with the shareholders we must stand up and be counted .

Friedel is playing for Spurs at 40, he's one of the best in the PL and keeping out the French No 1 Lloris who cost £12.5 million!

Would happy with this. Probably no comment field on the Taylor story for legal reasons. Any news on Wellens situation as this is a player we need back asap.COYB

Well, it hasn't taken MM long to realise what our weaknesses are. (This is not rocket science as we have been weak all over the field.) But somehow I trust MM's ability to spot the problems and do something about them more quickly than either of the two previous incumbents's efforts. Davis: Good move. Henderson: Goodbye and thanks. Scott Loach: You'll get your chance if you're good enough.

Henderson out Davis in seems sensible. Whether true is another matter.

The last decent goalkeeper we have had IMO. Havent seen him play recently but could be a good move. Certainly better than Henderson. Thank god we didnt buy him last year.

At last some fantastic news. I agree that Davis was the best keeper since Paul Cooper. Sign him and please not on loan !

Atleast if we get davis that means henderson well be going, but loach's morale may be low if we get another keeper in instead of playing him.
