Davis Linked With Town Return
Wednesday, 21st Nov 2012 10:57

Town want former keeper Kelvin Davis to return to Portman Road, according to a report in one of this morning’s tabloids. The 36-year-old, who is currently out of favour at Southampton, enjoyed a successful spell with the Blues between 2003 and 2005.

Boss Mick McCarthy is said to want to sign Davis on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal in January.

Bedford-born Davis began his career with Luton Town, during which he spent time on loan at Torquay and Hartlepool. He joined Wimbledon in 1999 before moving to the Blues for £600,000 in the summer of 2003 with the Dons in financial trouble.

After Town lost out in the play-offs to West Ham for the second year in succession, Davis was sold to Sunderland for £1.25 million in the summer of 2005.

Current Blues manager McCarthy took over as manager at the Stadium of Light in March 2006 and Davis was a regular in his side as the Wearsiders dropped into the Championship.

However, it had been an unhappy spell in the North-East for the 6ft 1in tall keeper and he moved on to Southampton that summer for £2 million.

Last season, Davis was named in the PFA's Championship Team of the Year - he had been in the League One XIs in the previous two seasons - as he helped the Saints back into the Premier League.

He started the campaign as their number one but lost his place after their 6-1 thumping to Arsenal in September, although he has appeared once since then, in the 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Leeds.

Town moving for an experienced permanent keeper would be little surprise with loanee Stephen Henderson currently the number one ahead of Scott Loach, 24, who was dropped by previous boss Paul Jewell having signed for £150,000 from Watford in the summer.

Davis, who made 93 appearances while with the Blues, is well-known to Town keeper-coach Malcolm Webster from his time at Portman Road and also under George Burley’s management early on in his six years with the Saints.

Tell you who might be on MM's radar, I could be wrong here, but didn't Thomas Sorenson play for him at Sunderland (like I say could be totally wrong). Think he's 2nd choice at Stoke, has been linked before. Wonder if that'll ever be on the cards... Davies, better than what we have, probably, super exciting potential signing, probably not. Wouldn't say no right now though.

I personally think Begovic was awesome. Kelvin was pretty much level in ability to wrighty. But my all time favourite was Craig Forest. Always had a big smile and a wave for the north stand and played alongside some absolute legends.

Craig Forrest, my favorite ever goalie... shame they bought the back pass rule in as kicking was his only let down in my opinion - TWTD.

Yes please. His age is nothing to worry about for a 'keeper.

I went to my first game in 1970 i cannot remember in all that time having a squad with such indiscipline as we have now. I find it so sad the good name of ITFC has been dragged through the mud so much in recent times. I only hope last nights events are not as bad as reported. I sit here with my head in my hands wondering whats coming next. Very sad times for ITFC indeed.

I think the club is at it's lowest ebb. I have said this so many times over the past few weeks.I am like a stuck record but I really cannot think of another phrase which would suit our plight.Whatever kind of individuals are we signing. They seem to arrive with so much baggage! Is it only these individuals that we can only now attract. Why are we he'll bent as well on always trying to get players in who were here years ago? Are there other clubs out there with this obsession.I doubt not.We have a team of loanees .When is it all going to end? I feel so cheesed off supporting this team at the moment and unfortunately cannot see it improving in the foreseeable future.Lets hope that I am wrong.

I hate loanees with a passion!,most pointless signings,in one minute out the next!. Kelvin Davis without doubt was the best keeper we've had for along time(better than wrighty by a country mile!) but alas I sadly think his best days are behind him,I know some on here say that his age not to old for a keeper, but come on he got dropped early doors this season ,Adkins thought he ain't got it anymore.top keeper in his day though! Anyone remember his goal kick in playoff 1st leg against wet spam that hit harewood on the backside and they scored from it? But how many times did he save us though!

Craig Forest - best. C'mon boys, let's get real. 10 foot tall, but couldn't catch a cold under pressure. Remember his response to the sarcastic cheers from Churchmans? I'll take Davies back anyday. 36 is nowt for a keeper. Look at Friedel and Schwarzer.

Yep get rid of Henderson and bring in him and he can do battle with Loach on who can start!

Noelthedub - have to disagree. Having a good keeper behind you makes the defenders more relaxed and confident, and we haven't had that since Davis left IMO. GK is key and Henderson is poor.

He was absolute quality when he was here, bar Richard Wright in his early days, he's been one of the best keepers I've seen down here.

He's been excellent at Saints and bit harsh to hear their fans criticise him as dont become a bad goalie overnight.

Would have him back here in a heartbeat.

Kelvin was really good for us, but hasn't managed to cut it at two attempts in the premiership. Therein lies the problem, now we're in a fix we keep bringing in people temporarily to try and get us out of the hole, but very few of them are good enough in the long term. The logic of that is that we should really give Loach a proper go to see if he can make it.

Over the years footballers have been convicted of offences such as assault, death by dangerous driving, drugs, assault of women, drink driving also faced charges of racism involved in sex tapes and jailed for rape. After all this they are welcomed back into the football family cheered on by their clubs supporters. Whats next will there be kids out there wearing a club shirt with the name of a convicted peado on the back. Im done football has got no honor any longer, money has completely ruined the game in this country.

Good player and i hope he come to us and sign proper in january.
Get Henderson back to the bubble boys because he must have a record of his own
the amount of goals he has let in for town in just a few games
Loach has got to have a run in goal now until we get a better keeper and as far as i am concerned davis would do a good job for us and he would help the other young keepers to come on and play for town later on down the road
If this is not just paper talk about Davis then go get him Mick and sign him proper in january.

Popeye: Good point about Friedel. Don't forget Mark Schwarzer at Fulham. I think he's the 'wrong' side of 38 as well.

Are we the only club in Championship who keep having loan keepers, just spend the money we have wasted on a proper permanent number 1

Bob7881 - you're so right - don't think many decent people could / would disagree with you.

Not just in Football either - society in general springs to mind - but we will be accused of not moving with the times I guess, and of course, not accepting change !!!!
Just glad to have the years behind me that I have.
