Murphy: Town Can Cope Without Campbell
Thursday, 3rd Jan 2013 06:00

Ipswich can cope without DJ Campbell if the 10-goal loan striker doesn't return from his parent club QPR, according to his Blues strike partner Daryl Murphy, who says Michael Chopra now has a chance to re-establish himself in the side. Campbell is due back in training with Rangers today ahead of Saturday's FA Cup third round tie against West Brom at Loftus Road.

Murphy, who has netted five times this season, said: “You have to have players who can step up when required. Basically, DJ has been scoring all the goals for us but we know Chops can do that too.

“He’s done it at every club he’s been at. He just hasn’t had so many chances recently because we’ve been playing so well and the gaffer has stuck with the same team.

“There’s more to our squad than the starting eleven. I’ve been in the same situation as Chops, as recently as last year, when the team was on a run and I wasn’t even getting on the bench.

“I know how frustrating it is and every time you get a chance you have to do your best. It’s happened for me with the gaffer — I was on the bench for a while and it’s not nice when you’re not playing.

“You’re pleased when the team wins but more than anything you want to be out there. It’s about working hard and taking your chance when it comes. I nicked a few goals as a sub and got back in the team.

“You just have to stick at it by working hard in training and trying to impress the gaffer. He looks for that sort of reaction from players and I think we’ve got a good bunch of lads here who do that. If Chops gets his chance it will be up to him to grab it and I think he definitely can.”

Really constructive comment RetroBlue....... A player who has been playing well over the last month or so trys to lift the confidence of a fellow player who we now need to rely on and all you can do is shoot him down ! Sometimes you just have to shake your head and laugh at some of our 'supporters', oh how I wish they would fcuk off and 'support someone else !

trulyblue has a very good point, Murphy is trying to boost our strikers confidence, we shouldn't be putting it down again. We should get behind the team whatever the starting 11 is. While Campbell is back at QPR one of our own strikers will be on the pitch with Murphy so lets get behind them rather than saying how they won't score.

Big test for the team Saturday with Henderson Orr and Campbell out.
Loach and Chopra have a point to prove and poss Jet is Edwards goes to right back or possible Hewitt playing he first full game.
Aston Villa could be in the Championship next year so will see how far we have come or see where we need to replace.

Town are not done for without DJ. Yes he scores goals but what else does he offer? At least with him gone we can play one of our own - Chopra, or even Ellington. BETTER OFF RID!

Credit to Murphy, he's saying the right thing.
Whether Chopra can still deliver, I have my doubts - would love for him to do so.

DJ Campbell has been pretty clinical - he is a goalscorer - nowt else who was getting a good link with DM ... I honestly believe JET can play in more forward role and really start using his talent - I know TC has been working with him to develop more Central attacking role. We know Chops can do it , and I really hope he does coz if he starts scoring again he wont stop ...............COYB -

All Chopra needed earlier in the season was a strike partner, playing him as a lone striker was a poor decision.

Murphy, Chopra, Scotland and JET all will get us the odd goal but none will be regular scorers. We are back to the same problems we had at the start of the season. The one main difference being that the back four seem more settled and reliable, although an injury to either Chambers or Smith and we are short on cover.

Despite what Murphy says, we still need another striker, a creative midfielder who can service those up front and cover for the defence.

I hope Mick gives Jack Marriott the extra spot in the squad vacated by DJ and then gets him on the pitch at some point. At some stage we have to start planning for next season and playing some of our kids against the kids at Villa in the Cup might be a smart move. It will give senior players a rest and we will avoid injuries and bookings to important players we need back winning points in the league.

Chops to stand up and be counted as a direct replacement for DJC, hmm now who would have a bet on that, oh! of course Chops would, about the only one!
