Murphy: Victory More Important Than Revenge
Friday, 8th Mar 2013 06:00

Town’s visit to Peterborough tomorrow is bound to rekindle memories, for players and supporters alike, of the horrendous 7-1 defeat there in August 2011.

Daryl Murphy is no exception, even if he was watching the nightmare unfold on television almost 400 miles away in Scotland.

Murphy had no official connection with Ipswich at the time but shared the hurt, revealing: “I had already agreed to join on loan for the remainder of the season.

“I saw the game on television but there was no way I was going to change my mind. When I came in a couple of days later the atmosphere around the place wasn’t great because of that defeat.

“It’s not a question of owing them something because the stakes for the game are already so high that we need to go there and win. Getting beaten by that many, plus the manner in which it happened, meant that dressing room morale wasn’t great.

“We’re not going there seeking revenge — it’s simply a game that we must win. When you get beaten like that it doesn’t help players’ confidence but there are some strong characters in the team and they were able to motivate themselves for the next game.”

The Celtic loanee could replace the suspended Lee Martin on the left of midfield, while right-back Richard Stearman is also banned and it is unclear who will fill in there, with Elliott Hewitt and Reece Brown, on loan from Manchester United, both in contention.

Murphy added: “Elliott’s been here a while now so we know all about him and what he can do. He’s already had a few chances in the team.

“Reece came in last week and you expect the quality he has as a player. He has shown it in training and will be a good addition to the squad. It will be a tough call for the manager to decide who plays. I wouldn’t like it to be my decision.”

Chambers will replace Stearman at right-back, with Kisnorbo coming in alongside Smith.

Why break up the best central defensive pair we've had in years, put carlis back there and drury/JET in front of him

Things aren't that bad, Carlos is useless at right back!

McCarthy doesn't want to play Edwards at right back so he'll play Hewitt or Brown, it's only the one game anyway

Hoping Hewitt gets a chance at RB on Saturday, the lads been patient all season and put in a good showing against Aston Villa.
