McCarthy: We Were The Better Team
Saturday, 9th Mar 2013 18:04

Manager Mick McCarthy thought the Blues were the better side but bemoaned his team’s failure to put the ball in the net after their 0-0 draw at Peterborough. The Town boss had praise for Posh keeper Bobby Olejnik, who made important saves from Frank Nouble and David McGoldrick in either half, but believed his side ought to have been awarded a penalty for handball against Posh midfielder Jack Payne after the break.

McCarthy said: “I think we were the better team. If there was one performance which deserved to win I think it was ours, but you don’t get it on what you deserve, you’ve got to put the ball in the net.

“But the goalkeeper had a big part to play in that, he made two fabulous saves and we didn’t make the most of our opportunities at times.

“I think we had most of them and the best of the game and there was another decision, a clear penalty, I don’t know how it hasn’t been given.

“He’s moved his hand to the ball. I’ve just looked at it again, I can’t see anything other than a penalty. I’m not one for rose-coloured specs, if it’s not, it’s not, but he’s got to give that.”

But it was Olejnik McCarthy felt did most the thwart his side: “But for two fantastic saves today, we score two goals. All right there were others, but he’s got them the points, that’s my view. Two fabulous saves.

“Maybe we should give him a bit of toffee rather than giving our lads [stick] because they did nothing wrong, the header was good, the shot was good and the keeper was brilliant.”

He added: “I said beforehand I’d take a point and we’re going to have to take the point because it keeps Peterborough down below us, but there’s a slight disappointment because I thought we played well enough in the game to have won it.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson thought his team didn’t take their opportunities when they were there, but conceded that defeat would have been harsh on the Blues: “I suppose it’s a clean sheet, that’s one of the positives, but we just weren’t clinical enough when we got the chances, same as on Tuesday.

“I don’t know if we did enough to win the game, I’ve got to be honest, but when you get chances at this stage of the season, particularly when games are so tight, you really need to take them.”

Regarding the penalty call, Ferguson was unsighted: “I didn’t see it, I honestly didn’t see it. If it is, it’s about time we had a bit of luck off the officials because we’ve had enough bad luck, if you want to call it luck, so maybe we’ve got some today.”

paulnstar and bluey123. Your living on another planet. We cant just judge ourselves by the past its been and gone you have to live in the present.
If the good times are to return we need to get behind are manager and players your attitude is not at all helpfull.
A good team needs strong relationships bettween players and they get that through playing together for a long period. If we sign the loanees and keep the current squad we can stay up and kick on next season.we have seen players like delaney and leadbitter go and fans said they were noy good enough but they are regulars now for team challenging for play offs. They is not a lot of differance bettween players in this division but if we can keep these players and get a good pre season next season could be much better.
You cant critisise fans for backing jewel he was are manager at the time so getting behind him and the team is the correct thing to do.
Shame some dont see it that way

Why is everyone so worried about Wickham? He flatters to deceive. Didn't score goals at Sunderland and hasn't set the world alight at Sheff Wed. Great bit of business for Town if you ask me!
