Stevenage Praise for Town Support
Stevenage Praise for Town Support
Wednesday, 7th Aug 2013 16:06

Stevenage have written to Town to praise the almost-1,400-strong Blues support at Broadhall Way for last night’s Capital One Cup tie, which Boro won 2-0.

In an email, the League One side's safety officer, Steve Fanthorp, wrote: “Could you please pass on to the club how well behaved your supporters were at last night's game, even though the tie went against them.

“The away section of our ground has 1,390 seats and 1,313 turned up to support Ipswich. Due to a late walk-up and certain turnstile issues, around 50/60 fans missed the first five minutes and, to their credit, they did not complain.

“During the game they were very compliant and did not cause us any issues whatsoever. This all added to a great atmosphere on a traditional Cup night.

“At my post-match debrief with the stand supervisors, they both commented on how well behaved and friendly the Ipswich supporters all were. They are a credit to your club.”

Nice touch by Stevenage. We do have fantastic support, just hope they finally give us something to shout for eventually!

Credit to the stevenage fans, they added to the atmosphere last night.
As the season goes on hopefully we'll have something to sing about!
COYB!

Good numbers away for a 1st round tie in the cup. Shame that when we go away people travel all that way and sit down and dont attempt to create an atmosphere and show support. Whats that all about

Well done Pallestine and Britton1996, somehow you have both managed to put a negative spin on a very positive post. Congrats...

In fairness MM also praised the away support, not just last night but at Reading as well. Shame the team didn't perform - but nonetheless credit to those who made the effort to support the club on a Tuesday night in the first round of the Carling Cup - which notoriously is generally not very well supported!

Nice gesture by SBFC. The turnstiles were a bit of a joke, I called the club during the day and they said 350 tickets had been returned by us unsold, so I imagine that meant 1000 odd were sold upfront, however it felt like more than 350 waiting with cash in hand trying to get in. Another positive was I noted pie and chips was only £4 which I though was quite reasonable these days... I didn't partake though, maybe I should have done as it might have put a bit of a cherry on a disappointing result. Sod the football, can anyone comment on the pie quality at SBFC, did I miss out???? :-)

I'm sorry to have to put a downer on this, but I feel it shouldn't go unmentioned. One Ipswich 'fan' proved himself to be particularly obnoxious last night and genuinely made me consider not ever going to an away game again. He was wearing a 90s Town shirt with the Greene King sponsorship on it, had short dark hair and stubble. Perhaps others might have noticed him. At the turnstiles it was clear that he was heavily intoxicated, pushing his way to the front of the queue whilst hurling abuse at fellow supporters. Completely unprovoked (well, because I wasn't prepared to let him push in front of me) he proceeded to call me every name under the sun including a 'mother***ing c***'. Rather hilariously he tried to inform me that 'Norwich aren't playing tonight, c***' - as if that was supposed to be some sort of insult to me. Considering the rivalry between Ipswich and Norwich doesn't cause me to lose sleep ever, it certainly didn't!!! The racist and vitriolic abuse towards one fan, however, did make my blood boil. It's a great shame I didn't get further details of this foul man, as I'd be doing everything I could to get him banned from future games. It's these sorts of rowdy yobbos that put me off football, because the on-field action is better than any other sport.

Ohhhh and I'm not sure we did lose last night as according to the programme we were Oldham Athletic (did anyone else spot that misprint on the programme team list?) This being the case I say we're due a rematch as clearly it wasn't really us last night. Long shot I know, but If we were granted a replay I would be interested in those pies.

@Thatmuhrencross... that sucks mate, if he was being racist was it not reported to staff/police? Should have been, no place in the game for that, thought town fans were better than that. Disappointing.

@sirbenofmorlingshire I regret not reporting it. I was just trying to ignore him at the time. No place at all for people like him in the game.

Good to see Stevenage complimenting the fans and the club on our support, another great following by the fans and thought the atmosphere was pretty good in both the home end and our end.

Shame on the pitch we were so dire

From what I've heard I'm glad I had to stay at work and couldn't make the trip. I know it's early days and all that but frankly if we can't beat a league 1 team all that talk of playoffs is just a dream.
I would rather Stevenage had e mailed the club to complain about the fans having been stuffed on the pitch by a far superior team but instead we are still that nice family club. The only thing that matters is results and performance in that order.

Please don't worry about this result, if you look at a lot of the results from last night; there were quite a few championship clubs knocked out. Most Managers would see this as a distraction from the main event which is getting promoted, all of those including losing championship clubs from last night and MM; play the PC card and make it sound as though we wanted to do well in this competition. The real goal is the league and with this cup out of the way, MM can concentrate on just that. It starts Saturday...COYB.

@thatMuhrencross - sounds like a nasty pissed up idiot that you came across last night, not very nice. You get them everywhere, though rarely in the Town ranks in my experience, thankfully. However you're considering not going to an away game again because of this incident? You need to man up mate. Like I say you get these idiots in all walks of life, they are unavoidable. You must have known there was a fair chance he wasnt going to react well to you speaking out? With that in mind you should have either not said anything in the first place, or been prepared to stand up for yourself when the inevitable verbal onslaught came. It sounds like there was enough reason for you to believe you were under threat so you could have defended yourself without waiting for him to hit you quite legally. Just standing there and taking a load of verbal of someone though means you both end up looking stupid.

And he was being racist as well as generally abusive and threatening? Did anyone tell him to shut the f u c k up? If not I'm as ashamed of the ones that did'nt say anything as I am of him. We have a placid and peaceful reputation which is commendable but there are times I think when Town fans need to man up a bit...

We do have such an amazing fan base considering how mediocre we have been for the last 7 years. The slightest sniff of optimism/hope and we all turn up in huge numbers(even though 99% of the time we leave disappointed.) Oh well maybe one day it will be different and we will be rewarded for this loyalty!

P.s. Although I am very fond of our club.....some of our fans are really creepy!

I wonder if we will be writing to Millwall with the same sentiments following Saturdays match?

Bergholt, Millwall fans were fantastic two seasons ago at PR, best away support I've ever heard.

@thatmuhrencross (and any others that care to listen) you can now download an app (kick it out) which allows fans to report anonymously (I think) any incidents of racism in the stands. You can give as much info as possible and they will try to address the issue. Not sure if the app will work or be a success but it can only be a good thing if as many people as possible are aware of its existence so that it can be dealt with properly by the authorities rather than start a fisticuffs. Though I appreciate the sentiment of those that feel all should stand up to such thugs, we must all have jobs and families to think of, so I can understand the reluctance
Of some.

I'd just like to make one point about the result last night. Crystal Palace lost the first three games of last season & went out of the cup to a lower league team in the first round... Look at them now!

I think Micks signings with no money to spend look quite good but he seem to have faith in the same strikers that we had last season who did not score that many goals between them
Forget about Billy sharp because Southampton want 1.8 Million for him so that count us out
Lets hope Taylor come good and get us some goals or Mick find a top proven striker in the loan market because the rest of our strikers are average players and I cant se them scoring enough goals to get us into the playoffs
I hope they prove me wrong
