Adekunle a Surprise Package
Tuesday, 3rd Sep 2013 06:01

Boss Mick McCarthy has hinted that 18-year-old recent signing Jordan Adekunle could be included on the first team bench sooner rather than later. The left winger joined last month on a one-year deal after coming through Crawley’s youth set-up.

McCarthy says he has impressed while working with the senior squad: “Jordan Adekunle has been training with us, but is he ready for the first team yet? I don’t know.

“He’s got something, so he might be a sub at some stage because he’s got a fair bit of pace and he’d be a surprise package, but I don’t think he’s ready for that yet.”

If he is good enough. He is old enough!

At least Town are looking are taking a chance on such players again. It's a small gamble in terms of wages and could pay off. Mick and his team did it at Wolves on a number of occasions, so why not here, now that we seem to have got the scouting side of the club better sorted?

For many years it seems like we ignored the young players from the lower divisions and were only interested in the high wage "has beens", so I regard any stories like this as very good news.

Hopefully he is another hidden gem found by Mick and his scouts. Also, Doherty (correct spelling?) could be another one. Agree BotesdaleBlue, it's good that we're making moves like this as it shows that Mick has plans for the future as well as for the present. Even if we don't quite make it this year (not being negative, I still think we stand a good chance if we pick ourselves up before the next lot of games) then hopefully Mick will stay for a good few years to come in order to see these young signings blossom.

Maybe it would be an idea to loan them out for a season, get them used to playing football week in and week out. They'll develop more in League Two than a reserves game at Playford Road. I think Mick will dip into the loan market next week. Think we need a natural left winger and a goal scoring striker to take the pressure off McGoldrick.

Sounds a Nouble double.

if he's the kiddie that came on for Crawley in the Town v Town friendly at Broadfield in July, then I'd agree with Mick. Bags of pace and quite a bit of skill evident. One to watch.
