Town Duo Are Premier Class
Tuesday, 7th Jan 2014 06:01

Boss Mick McCarthy believes striker David McGoldrick and midfielder Cole Skuse are both capable of playing in the Premier League.

The Town manager has been delighted with 26-year-old McGoldrick since he joined the Blues initially on loan in January before signing a two-year deal after joining on a Bosman following his release by Nottingham Forest in the summer.

“He’s been a really good signing,” McCarthy said of his 12-goal top scorer. “He was when he was here on loan and he’s just got better. He’s continued to develop and he’s been a really good signing for us.

“I think if players are playing well and excelling in the Championship that’s what people start looking at — can they play in the Premier League?

“Dids has certainly got the ability to play in the Premier League, I think all through his career he’s been looked upon as a really talented individual.

“For whatever reason he’s never really fulfilled it, he’s had fits and starts, I thought he was excellent for Coventry when we went and watched him and took him from there.

“Whatever he’s done, probably maturing and growing up and appreciating what he’s got, he’s a great guy in the dressing room and around the place and he’s an outstanding player.”

McCarthy has been similarly impressed with Cole Skuse, who also signed on a Bosman in the summer after leaving Bristol City.

“He’s terrific Skusey,” the Town boss added. “I think it was Sean O’Driscoll who said 'You know he’s a good player now, but when you get him under the roof and in the building you’ll know he’s a better player than you thought'.

"And that’s been the case. He’s a delightful young fella, he really is. I think he’s Premier League quality. I watch a lot of Premier League football and he can use both feet, he’s competitive, he’s quick, very athletic, he’s a good package.”

Skuse has been an excellent signing, but like others not entirely sure he is Premier League quality. Time will tell.

I think McGoldrick has PL quality but the lack of pace could be a problem at that level. He is our styar man by a million miles. Tommy Smith could make the step up as he has pace and reads the game well and you don't need to be a great footballer to play CB. Dellaney has proved a point at Palace and looks very accomplished

blueboy - i totally agree with you (shock , horror) that if we were promoted with the current squad we would struggle massively in the PL. We need in my opinion 4 or 5 more good players before this team could compete realistically in that league, and probably some more back up.
How we differ is that i appreciate the improvement we have made in the last year and although i would like more flowing football i am prepared to be REALISTIC in not expecting us to run before we can walk and accept that we are a work in progress .
What i dont do is constantly compare us to the Robson team of the 80's and harp on about the clubs past and how we have fallen so far etc etc blah blah blah.
What you need to do IN MY OPINION is accept that those days are gone, probably to never return, thats REALISTIC. Football has changed and its even harder now for a market town club in a rural county to be a force . We over achieved for a number of years and it was great and we should be hugely proud of it and always aim to repeat it , however REALISTICALLY its unlikely.

yorksblue - no problem with you not agreeing, its all about opinions and some players in particular seem to really divide peoples views.
Not saying im right but PC was one of my favourites and i feel was never used to his full potential.

The time you find out if you are Premier League class is if and when you get there but there is some merit in the arguments for Cresswell, McGoldrick, Skuse and Smithy and Chambers, though pace an issue for McG and Skuse I think. I have long argued that 4/5 plsyers aside we are poor and with a poor bench and we are in fact massively overachieving this season based on the squad we have. This is all good though as with a few clever signings in this window we could actually stay challenging against all odds and then who knows.....

The timing of these comments from MM is worrying though along with those about Cressy and I fear we may have to sell before bringing players in. But unlike with the last 2 jokers (and Clegg) I suspect MM may at least have a plan...
