Town Target Garvan Return
Wednesday, 5th Feb 2014 12:28

TWTD understands that Town are looking to sign former Blue Owen Garvan on loan from Crystal Palace. Boss Mick McCarthy wants to add another midfielder to his squad to replace loanee Ryan Tunnicliffe, who joined Fulham from parent club Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window.

Garvan, 26, has not been included in the Eagles’ 25-man squad for remainder of the season, also having been omitted during the first half of the campaign.

The Dubliner came through the academy at Town - he was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning squad - before making his debut in August 2005.

After making 134 starts and 40 sub appearances, scoring 15 goals, he moved on to Palace in the summer of 2010 during George Burley’s spell in charge at Selhurst Park.

Contracted until 2015, the Irishman has made 71 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Eagles, scoring 11 goals, but has played only three games this season, all in the opening month of the campaign.

Town boss McCarthy hoped to add to his midfield options before last Friday’s deadline but pulled out of a deal to sign a player believed to be Leeds United’s Paul Green having been unable to come to an agreement regarding wages.

Speaking after the Bolton game, the Town manager said he would look at the emergency loan market when it opens on Saturday, expecting other players to become available with clubs having made additions during the transfer window. Football League clubs can sign loanees for up to 93 days.

A fortnight ago, http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/24461/mccarthy-watches-palaces-u21s>TWTD reported that McCarthy was spotted watching a Palace U21 side including Garvan beat Bristol City 2-0.

I remember when Garvan was a youngster and tipped for the top, after watching him last season he still has that same potential he just needs the right manager to bring it out of him, MM is that manager!

Interesting, as always, to hear the different views of Town fans.

I for one would welcome Owen back. As some have commented, he isn't the pacy player Tunnicliffe was, but he is able to pick a pass and can't have been a mainstay in our team, and then the CPFC team that went up, if he was useless.

MM went to get Paul Green, people moaned, he pulled the plug and is now potentially eyeing up someone else, and some people still moan.

We are 7th in the league and looking more threatening than in any of the last 10 years I've been a season ticket holder at PR. In MM and TC we trust. COYB

if we were a threatening team, we should consider scoring a goal in the first half of the game

I'd have him back in a heartbeat. There wasn't enough fuss when he left in my opinion.

Did well when Palace got promoted last season and fully expected the Premier League to suit him better but was surprised when he wasn't even in their 25 man squad, so would be a good signing if he is match fit!

Jimmy 86 ... I do like Garvan I like that type of player who is comfortable on the ball and can pass rather than ones who run around a lot a tackle, that's the difference between positive football and negative football .
I do not believe Garvan is like Gerrard or Xavi in the same way I do not believe Ipswich are Liverpool or Barcelona unlike some fans unrealistic views . What I do believe is that he is better than what we have in our squad and wants to play football the right way in my eyes and wouldn't be scared to cross the halfway line and shoot unlike our centre midfielders so far this season ,how many goals and assists ?

Good player on his day and definitely adds a bit of class to the midfield. Pace is an issue, as it is throughout our team, but he is better than Tunnicliffe and Tabb and different from Hyam and Skuse so let's do it. I just worry that Mick might end up showing him on the left!

I'm up for anything that keeps Hyam out the side. Hardly missed him have we! - 3 games, which featured 2 wins and a draw. If anything, I saw more forward passes and the ball not treated like a hot potato.

blueherts - we were chatting about that very subject in the office earlier. Town fans have a horrible habit of getting on the backs of a player if they dare to pass sideways, backwards, are slow, lazy etc. The trouble with this is that football is very much a confidence game. You start jeering a play while he is on the pitch he isn't going to be quite as keen to go and receive the ball off a team mate, or have the confidence to try something different. Especially if they try a forward pass and don't pull it off and get booed for that too! - its counter productive and we should all support those lads wearing the shirt for as long as they are on the pitch.
