Town Target Garvan Return
Wednesday, 5th Feb 2014 12:28

TWTD understands that Town are looking to sign former Blue Owen Garvan on loan from Crystal Palace. Boss Mick McCarthy wants to add another midfielder to his squad to replace loanee Ryan Tunnicliffe, who joined Fulham from parent club Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window.

Garvan, 26, has not been included in the Eagles’ 25-man squad for remainder of the season, also having been omitted during the first half of the campaign.

The Dubliner came through the academy at Town - he was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning squad - before making his debut in August 2005.

After making 134 starts and 40 sub appearances, scoring 15 goals, he moved on to Palace in the summer of 2010 during George Burley’s spell in charge at Selhurst Park.

Contracted until 2015, the Irishman has made 71 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Eagles, scoring 11 goals, but has played only three games this season, all in the opening month of the campaign.

Town boss McCarthy hoped to add to his midfield options before last Friday’s deadline but pulled out of a deal to sign a player believed to be Leeds United’s Paul Green having been unable to come to an agreement regarding wages.

Speaking after the Bolton game, the Town manager said he would look at the emergency loan market when it opens on Saturday, expecting other players to become available with clubs having made additions during the transfer window. Football League clubs can sign loanees for up to 93 days.

A fortnight ago, http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/24461/mccarthy-watches-palaces-u21s>TWTD reported that McCarthy was spotted watching a Palace U21 side including Garvan beat Bristol City 2-0.

Cloddy - don't think anyone is claiming he is a Messiah! I do take your point about fitness but if he has been playing for their U21 then hopefully he won't be far off. He does lack pace but was hugely creative and chips in with a good goals tally and at 26 is coming into his peak. Well worth a punt IMO.

This would be a great signing...an attacking creative midfielder who isn't afraid to put a tackle in. It would give us other options...

Having watched him since he first set foot at Portman Road, I would say thank you for the offer, but no thanks. For me, while at times he was capable of being quite good (he could pass a ball well when his radar was working) he spent far too long in a match being anonymous. Not what you want from a central midfielder. No surprise to hear mutterings about attitude, either.

..... no bad thing - but Wordsworth has all those qualities to offer that Garvan had at his best.

Bobblehat - agreed - no comparison between Skuse and Garvan in terms of type of player.

Great news, sign him Mick - PERMANENTLY! good engine, good passer, knows the club well. No brainer.

Ex-player and playing for Mick I think we'll get a good loan spell out of him, and a 'deck' footballer which is always nice to see!

This has got to be a load of drivel. Why would Boring Billy want to sign a player who can play football, has a brain and can pass the ball on the ground. he would be like a duck out of water here.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I thought we had seen the last of this guy. By far the worst player in recent years to have played for the club. No pace, No defensive ability, no goalscoring record, no ariel ability, no history of assists and no positional sense. Terrible player all round!

not worth the trouble,he is still injury prone. What is the point,it will never happen anyway as he was a lazy player with very little commitment.!

Lacks pace, injuries are a concern and fairly immobile. However, he's technically very good at this level and has 2 great feet. All in all he would give us the creativity and ability to find a killer ball that our current crop (as hard as they're grafting) don't appear to have.

Get him in Mick!!

Would absolutely love this if true ,exactly what we are missing in the centre with Skuse and Hyam working and tackling beside him . Extra bit of class to open a defence and would improve our set pieces also , one of the highest assists in championship last season and no coincidence that Palaces slump came when he was injured .
In my eyes should never have been sold ,build teams around creative players like Garvan ,would take the pressure off Dids to create something for the team every week

Better idea than getting Green here, at least he can create something.

Surco72 I was waiting for you to comment on this story as I know you still hold a soft spot for garvan, knew ud get excited bout this link. Not a bad player by any means, but you make him sound like xavi or Gerrard. He is slow and too lightweight and not really a mick type of player

Was gutted to see Garvan leave under Keane, so would welcome him back - hopefully not just rumour

Saw his debut against Cardiff in August 2005 and was a fine young prospect. Part of the Ipswich pedigree so let's welcome him back as he was raised here and merits a football re-birth. What better place than Portman Road but I hope his comeback works out better than Darren Ambrose's in 2008/2009 which never worked out unfortunately. Bring him on !

I really do not think Garvan is a Mick type player. Can you see him running all over the park carrying out defensive duties as well as being creative. He has absolutely no pace but agree he can thread a pass. It appears I am in the minority but we can do better than Garvan. Of course if this is true and we sign him I will support him.

it's taken Taylor 28 games to get fit, Wordsworth could do with going out on loan. Have we really got no money for anyone better than Garvan when we have an outside chance of the play-offs?

Has ME thrown in the towel?
