Yeovil 0-1 Town
Tuesday, 11th Mar 2014 21:55

Christophe Berra’s 40th minute goal saw Town to a 1-0 victory over Yeovil in their first ever visit to Huish Park. The Scottish international diverted Tommy Smith’s header from Stephen Hunt’s corner into the roof of the net to claim the Blues’ first away win of 2014.

Mick McCarthy handed Sylvan Ebanks-Blake his full league debut for Town in place of Paul Taylor in the Blues’ first ever game at Huish Park.

Luke Hyam, Paul Anderson and Hunt returned in midfield with Taylor, Paul Green and Jay Tabb amongst the subs and the injured Frank Nouble not travelling. Carlos Edwards and Teddy Bishop made the trip but were left out of the 18.

The home side won an early corner and after the ball was cleared, Tom Lawrence struck a powerful shot just past Dean Gerken’s left post.

On nine James Hayter hit an effort over from the edge of the box having been found by Lawrence, then Ishmael Miller saw a strike blocked with the home side on top in the opening stages.

Hunt crossed too close to Yeovil keeper Marek Stech, a one-time Town trialist, in the 13th minute with Ebanks-Blake lurking behind him. But the Glovers were still on top, Luke Ayling hitting a low shot through to Gerken two minutes later.

The Blues created their first significant chance of the game in the 20th minute when Anderson burst through the middle and found Daryl Murphy to his left but the Irishman sliced well wide much to the home fans’ amusement.

Just before the half hour, Cole Skuse smashed a half-volley well wide with the Blues starting to make some headway, albeit unconvincingly. On 35 Hyam was booked for a foul on Duane Holmes.

Anderson found Ebanks-Blake at the far post with a left-wing cross a minute later but the Town striker was unable to get in a header under pressure. The ball fell to Hunt, who shot wide.

The Blues were getting on top and in the 38th minute the lively Anderson played the ball into Murphy’s feet, he laid it back to Ebanks-Blake and his strike was blocked by Byron Webster.

Murphy headed the second of several successive Town corners wide but the pressure was building and from the fourth flagkick, the Blues went in front.

Hunt sent the ball over from the left and Smith’s header looked to be going beyond the far post until his central defensive partner Berra slammed it into the roof of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Anderson shot well wide from distance soon after the goal but neither side looked like scoring again in the closing minutes of the first half.

Town came more into what had been a scrappy game as the period wore on and their first real spell of pressure led to Berra’s goal. Yeovil had started brightly, creating a number of early opportunities but faded as the Blues imposed themselves in the latter stages.

Yeovil made two changes up front at half-time, Kieffer Moore and Sam Hoskins replacing Miller, who had been a handful early on before presumably picking up an injury, and James Hayter.

Soon after the restart, Skuse saw a shot blocked, then at the other end Hyam similarly prevented Glovers midfielder Ruben Palazuelos’s strike. The half had started in the same scruffy manner as the first period with both sides looking to get the ball forward quickly at every opportunity.

Ebanks-Blake shot low to Stech in the 57th minute, then just before the hour mark Hunt was booked for a foul on Webster right in front of the technical area. Soon after, Jonny Williams replaced the Irishman, Town having been planning to withdraw Ebanks-Blake prior to Hunt’s booking.

Mings replaced Ebanks-Blake on 65, Cresswell moving to left midfield. Moments later, Williams curled a shot well over.

There was a scare for the Blues a minute later when Moore took down a ball over the top but the advancing Gerken forced him wide and then blocked his shot. Soon after, Yeovil midfielder Joe Edwards was booked for a dive midway in the Town half.

The Blues came close to a second in the 70th minute when Cresswell’s freekick from the left ran loose but neither Murphy nor Anderson could apply the decisive touch and Stech claimed.

As the game moved into its final 15 minutes the match was surprisingly open, the impressive Williams stumbling when he looked to have got behind the Yeovil backline, then Anderson missing a low cross from the left.

At the other end, Morgan headed over but from an offside position, however, overall the home side were looking short on ideas, sending in too many high balls which the Town defence headed away.

On 82 Murphy broke through the middle before feeding Anderson to his right but the winger screwed his shot well wide. Green replaced Anderson for the final five minutes.

Cresswell shot just wide, then Skuse took the ball to the edge of the box before hitting a low curling effort which Stech did well to push past his right post.

From Cresswell’s corner, Mings headed to the Yeovil keeper. As the game moved into four minutes of added time another Cresswell strike deflected wide.

Yeovil thought they’d equalised a minute later when sub Moore shot on the turn from the edge of the area but saw his shot hit the inside of the post and almost impossibly fly across the face of goal to safety.

Play quickly moved to the other end, Murphy bringing the ball to the edge of the box before hitting a low strike which Stech did well to push wide.

Despite the late scare, Town claimed their first away win of 2014, their most recent prior to that came on Boxing Day at Doncaster.

It was another typically attritional Championship game. Town came through Yeovil’s early spell on top, then took a chance once they were in control.

The Blues had the better of the game in the second half — Williams adding some quality when he was introduced - with Yeovil only really threatening once before Moore’s late strike against the post and in the end probably deserved the points, although Glovers fans will go home feeling somewhat unfortunate not to have grabbed a late draw.

With Reading and Brighton also both winning, the Blues remain in ninth, four points from the play-offs.

Yeovil: Stech, Ayling, Webster, Duffy, McAllister (c), Lawrence, Edwards, Palazuelos, Holmes (Morgan 730, Miller (Moore 46)), Hayter (Hoskins 46). Unused: Dunn, Twumasi, Lanzoni, Dawson.

warktheline...again resorting to insulting people I noticed in earlier posts, haven't a clue what your going on about in the above post and you say your proving the 'boo boys' incorrect with your predictions, - really!?! more importantly you say Mick has, well I predicted 8th-10th at the beginning of the season.

.......... looking at posting trends - the 'dirty dozen' will always be at Portman Road come what may, and probably enjoy the dross, because they know no better - and expect sooooooo .... little.
Maybe they are the ones who should get a life !!

In terms of truthful perspective, the fact that we made for 20% of the whole crowd last night shows just how small the YEOVIL Club really is - and what a great job the Chairman,Manager, etc; have, and are doing there.

Hold your heads high YEOVIL TOWN.

blueboy - Saturday's result and performance were disappointing and it is fair enough to come on here and say so.
I too think Johnson and Yeovil are doing very well and would love to see them survive......However
When we get an away win and keep a clean sheet whoever the opposition can we not just celebrate that !
There are NO easy games in this league even against Yeovil, correct me if im wrong but they turned Forest over at home and got a point at Reading recently with 8 men , so yes they are down near the bottom but we went and did a professional job and got three points.
Whenever we win you seem to say it was against a 'poor' side , yet every week in this league there is at least one result that makes you sit up so any away win IMO is a good result and lets just enjoy that instead of throwing praise at the opposition.

@Dozzells - I know the post is not aimed at me but I don't think he really means 'poor' as regards to Yeovil I think the perspective is that Yeovil are one of the strugglers that we have beaten, think Charlton, Doncaster and Blackpool. I welcome 1-0 victories away from home any day of the week but is this a reflection on our team this season when we only beat the teams with the lesser amount of points? they're towards or at the bottom for a reason.
I'd like us to beat a team in the top half for once and considering we have 12 attempts and as said it's a competitive league and anybody can beat anybody on their day why haven't we had ours? poor tactics, wrong players in wrong positions, set up to play too defensively? 4 toughish games up should be interesting if we kick on from this.

Dozzells Bobblehat is right Blueboy. You are allowed to be happy when we win. You aren't a politician who would appear to be going back on policies if you once in a while posted something positive. You have made it clear you aren't a fan of Ipswich's current style of play, I agree with you on some of your points, but you are just a supporter so you are very welcome to enjoy the highs and get annoyed with the lows like everyone else. Isn't it nice that pundits on Sky Sports are calling us Play off contenders, even if you don't believe we are, it's nice to at least be back there again eh?

warktheline .......... suggest you read my posts correctly before commenting, or alternatively don't bother.

Winners are always happy when we WIN, as indeed I am proud to be one - what I don't do is suffer 'losers' gladly in any way, shape, or form.

Your last post highlights your 'real' sadness - when you don't allow any respect for a Club such as YEOVIL who are punching well above their weight in terms of stature. I acknowledge their limited, but creditable success and respect them accordingly.

Take the Blue Tints off - for once in your life - you may find life somewhat less sad.

I went to game , first 20 -25 mins we were really poor and a good side could have already been safe ,luckily for us Yeovil are nowhere near a good side whatever some may want to believe . The last 20 of the half was a poor game of hoof ball played by both sides and then we scored from a set piece which i believe was our only on target effort of half . Thought Tommy , Berra and Skuse carried us for long periods of half , Hyam was poor and can only go sideways slowly so Skuse was breaking up Yeovil and having to try and create also . Chambers looked shaky especially when run at probably a hangover from Saturday game .
Second half thought we started a lot brighter but everything was still long in the channel to Murphy even free kicks , and our inability to retain the ball from our own throw ins is very poor . Then MM made what was in effect a double sub and to be fair it worked a treat why Williams wasnt on from the start i do not know added pace , flair and time on the ball and wanted it constantly .Mings and Cressy were great down the left and we could have scored 3 or 4 if not for some good saves . They didnt trouble us at all until injury time which could have stolen a point for them but would have been hard on us .
Overall a good away win but could have been a lot easier with better options on pitch from start .
Where was MMs loyalty to players when he dropped Taylor after 1 poor showing in a team of poor against Boro , the team was better without the likes of Tabb , Green and Nouble and for me you could take Hyam out also and make teams worry about us for a change

JWM,you must be one of the 'dirty dozen'.he he he.

Langdon_Blue added 22:45 - Mar 12
Walktheline - I didn't understand the 'dirty dozen' comment either. It seems to suggest that only a handful of people are supporting McCarthy and the team. Over 1,000 fans travelled to Somerset on a Tuesday night. That speaks volumes.

Huge game against Wigan now since their win over Wednesday. We need 3 points if we are going to have a chance of getting into the top 6.
A 1-0 win will certainly make the next few games interesting.....

JWM - ....... obviously another who can't / won't read correctly.

I have NEVER said we 'should be pi-sing this League' - although if you compare us with a Club like Yeovil maybe we indeed should be.

he,he,he - puchline or what ?
