Free Agent Olsson Linked
Wednesday, 2nd Jul 2014 13:51

Town are reported to be eyeing free agent former Blackburn Rovers man Marcus Olsson as a potential replacement for Aaron Cresswell should the left-back move on this summer.

The Mirror claims Swedish international Olsson, 26, would be a potential Blues target if one of the numerous Premier League clubs monitoring Cresswell firms up their interest.

Olsson’s Ewood Park contract was up at the end of 2013/14, the former Högaborgs and Halmstads man having joined them in January 2012.

A move for Olsson, whose twin brother Martin plays for Norwich, to replace Cresswell would be a surprise as he’s played most of his recent football at left midfield, although having operated at left-back earlier in his career.

Town manager Mick McCarthy, who confirmed that there had been interest in Cresswell earlier in the week, has previously said that he views Tyrone Mings as the former Tranmere man’s successor if he moves on this summer.

Cresswell continues to be the subject of speculation with local London papers reiterating that Crystal Palace and West Ham are amongst the clubs keeping tabs on the 24-year-old Liverpudlian.

Elsewhere, St Mirren midfielder Kenny McLean, who was watched by McCarthy last season and has been linked with a move to Town on a number of occasions over the last year, has signed a new two-year deal with his current club.

Depends on his wage demands and the level of interest from other parties. Regardless of the questions over Aaron Cresswell, I personally wouldn't turn down us getting Olsson as an LM anyway.

Hmmmm... If Cressy goes I'd like to see an actual left-back come in. We've had too many square pegs in round holes the last few seasons, so the last thing we need is another one in a position where we have been very strong.

Would be a blooming good signing if the worst case scenario is to come about... (cresswell moving on)
even if aaron does decide to stay with us... could predict a nice very attacking left flank for the coming season.
not keen on all this press talk about ballsh*t signing neither

As Phil has said, the move would surprise me because he's a left sided midfielder? His brother Martin Olsson plays like Cressy but not Marcus, perhaps I'm wrong though.

Would surprise me as McCarthy mainly signs players born and bred in the UK. I think players that have learnt their trade on the continent find it harder to fit with the mentality of McCarthy's approach, after all he is an old school Brittish manager. (Not complain about McCarthy though, he is a great manager)

Why not play 3 at the back in a 3-5-2!

He's a good player, so would be pleased if we signed him. However, if Cresswell leaves, I would expect us to reinvest the fee received and certainly being looking at players other than loans and frees.

Seems highly unlikely.

MM has previously stated if Cresswell leaves he will play Mings. This guy would not want to be a bench warmer.

Not needed as left wing as we have Henshall and Hunt.

papertalk.

1. Mings is good enough.
2. MM is loyal. He wouldn't have said MIngs would step in if he wouldn't (Green and Richardson were both told they would be squad players)
3. Will Cresswell actually go? Great player (how quickly our expectations rise given the comments on his play last year when he was solid and, I suspect, not given free rein to overlap) but no actual bids yet. It would be a shame if it all happens after the season starts, I would prefer Mings to play a full pre-season knowing he is number 1 (so to speak). If it were my money, I would forsake a couple of hundred thousand in asking price for that.

If he's at Blackburn then trust me ,his wages are going to be ridiculous.

3-5-2 - far to open and attacking for Mick (at the moment) but quite a few teams in the World Cup have been using the formation to good effect namely Mexico, Costa Rica etc. -Initially 5-3-2 but as teams have tired second half they adopt the wing backs assisting the midfield - very flexible system.
