Wordsworth Joins Rotherham
Friday, 22nd Aug 2014 11:15

Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth has joined Rotherham United on loan until January. Yesterday, boss Mick McCarthy made the 25-year-old available for loan or permanent transfer.

Millers boss Steve Evans told their official site: “I am delighted that we have been able to bring Anthony Wordsworth to New York Stadium.

“He was a lad that we tried to sign on a few occasions last season but on every occasion we got close he was then back in Mick McCarthy’s first team so it never became a reality.

“The lad will bring a nice balance to our midfield area, he is naturally left-sided with a sweet left peg and can play on the left or centrally should the need arise.

“He is a talented boy who will come straight into contention for tomorrow’s tough match away at Millwall.

“It was important that if I added to the squad that I brought a player in who was with us for some time, and not just a few weeks.”

Wordsworth joined Town from Colchester in January 2013 for a fee of £100,000 but has never established himself as a regular in the side, making only 10 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice.

The midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the season, joins fellow loanee Paul Taylor and former Blues Scott Loach, Paul Green and Frazer Richardson at the New York Stadium.

I assume that, being loans, it will be part of the deal that neither Taylor or Wordsworth will be eligible to play against us.

Rotherham will be a good team this year. Hopefully means we might get first dibs on any good young talent they have.

Ipswich rejects is the the new nickname for Rotherham. Should certainly be interesting to see Harry's report when he delves into their forum for the matches against us. Wordsworth impresed me when I saw him so am disappointed he hasn't been given more of a chance. As for the players they've signed from us Green is in the side, Richardson hasn't been in ther 18 and Loach is the sub keeper.

Good luck to Woody. I like him & he definitely has something about him. However, between the number of injuries he has picked up - the first of which he got while putting his body on the line for us - and the type of football Mick wanted him to play when he did come in, he never really had a chance to demonstrate the quality he has. I hope it works out for him.
If we sign a fully fit Collison & Johnny Williams, on 1 year loan deals (with no 24 hour clause) at a very minimum though, I think most of us will be happy enough with our center midfield options this season. If moving Woody, Taylor & Nouble out helps make money for wages available to see this happen, it's good transfer trading in my book.

Hope you've got a couple of aces up your sleeve Mick.

Good luck Woody.

We need to remember that Woody carried on playing with a cracked vertebrae in his back that takes some doing and showed true commitment so I think we should all wish him well and hope it all works out at Rotherham

@ITFC_Cairo - where did Taylor, Skuse and Anderson come from then? that's right Bristol City and Peterboro, both relegation fodder when they were in this league but didn't stop PJ and MM signing them!

I get the feeling Steve Evans wants to manage ITFC!
Either that or he moulds himself on Mick as he keeps getting players we have had!
Echo other thoughts this leaves us very short so we need some quality additions sooner rather than later

Rotherham AKA ipswich reserves!!! Shame coz in my opinion woody offers something different to the other midfielders we have at the club. Hopefully got replacements lined up coz we already down numbers wise from last season

Best of luck to him. But why haven't we sighed a replacement for him, Taylor! Marriott, green, Richardson and Williams? Sammon the only player in in recent weeks and he must be in for Nouble. Our squad is very weak.

I'm sad to see Woody go, but this could be win-win for MM. If Woody can get lots of games and does well for Rotherham he could come back to ITFC at the beginning of 2015 a first team player. If it doesn't work out, then MM was right about him all along.

Woody must be wanting regular first team football to realise his potential. No surprise Rotherham were quick to take him, probably on the advice of all those ex ITFC players there!

Good luck Woody (you deserve the break you didn't get here).

shame he didn't get a run in the side, looked good on occasions, bit of an Andy Drury though..even though i liked him, we should be looking at players like Williams or players that can't get a game in the perm

Don't care really. Maybe Taylor wanted a drinking buddy and Wordsworth jumped at the chance!!

It's a pity as I always rated him as a player.

We have sold a number of players, Cresswell being the most obvious. Possible explanations are:
1) we are in really serious financial trouble,
2) Mr McCarthy has concluded that they are just not good enough and/or we have decent replacements,
3) we have a great youth pipeline,
4) we are clearing the decks for signing Williams.

I hope it is a combination of 3 and 4, bit I fear that it is 1.

Ipswich business, you may have a point with 1,as I seem to recall that last year the club were allegedly late in paying some bills
