Blues Targeting Former Millwall Skipper
Saturday, 6th Jun 2015 09:40

Town boss Mick McCarthy is understood to be targeting released Millwall skipper Alan Dunne. The versatile 32-year-old left the Den last month having been with the Lions since he was eight.

The Blues are believed to be in talks with the Dubliner, who can play at right-back, centre-half or in midfield.

Dunne progressed through the Millwall academy - having initially joined the club's youth set-up during McCarthy's time as manager - and into the first team, making his senior debut in March 2002.

The 5ft 10in tall defender went on to make 348 starts and 40 sub appearances for Millwall, scoring 23 goals, before his release at the end of the season.

Dunne, who was linked with Celtic earlier in the year, was named Millwall’s Player of the Year during the 2009/10 season in which they won promotion from League One via the play-offs.

In July 2011 he was given a testimonial match in which the Lions defeated Charlton 4-3 at the Den.

Another right-back is likely to be one of McCarthy's primary targets this summer with Elliott Hewitt having been released and with Jonny Parr increasingly having been used in midfield during 2014/15.

BlueandTruesince82 ......... I didn't say I disagree with that part of your post - what I do disagree with 100% is your advocating and philosophy of 32 year olds having 5 to 8 years useful playing time being possible and acceptable.

No doubt you will now name Lampard, Terry, and maybe a couple of others as examples - but these are total exceptions.

Come on, lets get some ambition back into this Club - that would mean young promising players, combined with a couple of experience, and we may just make some headway.

Yes, we've had a good season - but let's not rest on that, we've got a long way to go, as yet, to catch the carrot crunchers let lone anything else.
We won't do that with too many 32 year olds - they run out of legs - as we know !!!

Again Blueboy, rhetoric getting in the way of fact.

The average age at which footballers retire has steadily and consistently risen year upon year and continues to do so. Thus is due to advances in training, injury management, body management, treatment, understanding of the body, nutrition and diet and many more things. That is undeniable, on average a footballers shelf life is greater than it ever has been.

It's not just Lamps, Gerrard and few other superstars is it. It's Graham Alexander, Steve Clarrige, Dean Windass, Steve Bull, Jamie Cureton, Clint Hill, Clarke Carlisle, Kevin Phillips, Richard Dunne, David Dunn and more.

Let Alone Becks, Nesta, Raul, Scholes,Giggs, Roger Miller, Seedorf, Yepes, Distin, Friedal, Bebetov, Teddy Sheringham, John oshea I mean the list of legends goes on playing at that age and yes they may be superstars but they still prove my point. The human body can play to that age.

Whilst no I can't say with 100% Alan Dunne will play to that age nor can you say that he won't. If plays to 35, which even you have to admit is possible he could give us three years.

As I have already pointed out we don't have too many 32 year olds and.one with experience that offers cover across 3 positions has to be useful.

So you are whinging about

1. False facts RE the squad age
2. Something that has not happened yet again
3. Anyone who disagrees with your opinion

You are ignoring, fact, year on year progress under MM and now science too and yet it us who are deluded.

The truth is that (as you frequently remind us) you have been watching the game for so long you do not understand the modern football world, the way the game is run, the way clubs have run, nor the way it has developed. If only the players would pop down the local and smoke some woodbine and drink stout after the game. You persist on calling Mick a dinasaur but did you ever think that perhaps it is you who is of the Jurassic age?
