McCarthy: Jonas Has Been Terrific
Thursday, 20th Aug 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says new left-back Jonas Knudsen has made such a good start to his Blues career that Town haven’t missed Tyrone Mings, who joined Bournemouth for £8 million earlier in the summer. Danish international Knudsen, 22, was signed from Esbjerg for a fee understood to be in the region of £350,000 at the end of last month.

“I guess the biggest compliment I can give him is that we’re not missing Ty, and he was fabulous for us and I love Ty,” McCarthy said.

“Jonas has come in and has nailed that position, he’s been terrific. That’s the biggest compliment I can give him.

“Everybody, all the fans, myself, TC, we all loved Ty, we thought he was a terrific player, but you can’t see the join, he’s come in and been great.”

He believes players from some foreign leagues find it easier to settle into the hustle and bustle of the Championship than those from others.

“I guess it depends on which league they come from,” the Town manager added. “I think the Scandinavian leagues are pretty tough, they’re not all fanning out, they tackle and get about each other and get each other down.

“And we saw that in him when we first saw him on our scouting system, he looked like he’d got all the attributes to play in the Championship and that’s proving to be right.

“He’s very good, we trained [on Monday] morning and he was the one that’s shouting and encouraging. I’m delighted with him, he looks like a good signing.”

Knudsen looks like a worthy replacement for Mings, who in turn inherited the number three shirt from another excellent left-back Aaron Cresswell following his move to West Ham just over a year ago.

“I can’t take any credit for Cressy,” McCarthy continued. “I maybe helped him get out of the rut he was supposedly in when I joined, but I can’t take any credit for signing him.

"I think you’ve got to give Paul Jewell that credit. But I’ll take the credit for the other other two, partly along with TC.”

i rate jonas so highly after his performance agaisnt Burnley i have already put him on A Par with Mings.Could be one of the great bargain buys. Now all we need is that goal scoring playmaker.Hopefully Kevin Bru may fit the bill

Seem to notice that opposition teams attack more on their left, our right than on Jonas' side.Early days yet but will continue to monitor and wonder if they consider this to be our weaker side?

Jonas + £7.6 million profit, that has got to be the best bit of business Town has done for a very, very, very long time.

I've been very impressed with him, good left peg, barve, aware and has pace. MM needs to sort out we best use his throwing. Noticed already that opposition move back so sometiimes need to have the odd short one to catch them out, Also midfield should be picking up poor clearances on edge of penalty area , not everyonre in the 6 yard box.
MMat last recgnises that Scandinavia good place for recuiting (better than Ireland!!) so hope there's more where Jos came from

Good start but lets make some calls after 50 games in 9 months without a winter break!

Berra was giving him stick on tuesday night about holding the line, all things to work on, but has plenty of time.

Pilgrimblue,
agreed, does need to mix it up a bit, some short, some long.
Another observation I would make with regard to his long throws is that when Skuse runs towards you dragging two defenders with him it's not because he wants the ball, that's the time to make the throw!
