McCarthy: Making Play-Offs Extremely Difficult
Tuesday, 5th Apr 2016 22:52

Town boss Mick McCarthy admitted the Blues are “making it extremely difficult” to make the play-offs following their 0-0 home draw with Charlton. McCarthy said neither side were good enough to claim the three points.

“It was a tough game, neither of us were good enough to win it, we both had chances,” he said. “Why the hell they’re in the bottom three heaven only knows.

“[It wasn’t the worst 0-0] as a game to watch maybe, but it does neither of us any favours, us trying to get in the play-offs and them trying to get out of the bottom three.

“I go back to my first point, I don’t think either of us were good enough to win the game, because we both had chances.

“They’re a pretty tight unit at the minute, they sit back in and we weren’t good enough to break them down.

"We lost the ball, they caught us on the break, as we did to them at times and neither of us were good enough to finish it.”

The result leaves the Blues in eighth, seven points plus goal difference off sixth-placed Derby with only six games in which to close that gap.

“We’ll probably have to beat them at Derby,” the Town manager admitted. “We are at must-win, of course we are, can’t hide away from that fact.”

He added: “Try and win the next game, for us that’s all it can be. We’re making it extremely difficult to get in the play-offs.

“It’s getting harder and harder. But I’ve just said to the lads, stick together, we’ll try and get as many points as we can and we’ll see where it takes us, that’s all we can do.”

McCarthy felt the mix-up in the first half between Christophe Berra and Bartosz Bialkowski didn’t help the mood on or off the pitch just as the game was starting to settle.

“It didn’t, and it gave them encouragement. The game had started as you’d expect with one team trying to get into the play-offs and one trying to get out of the bottom three, it was a bit of a scrap for 10 minutes, it was a tough old fight.

“It started to settle down and that just made us nervy and it gave them a bit of encouragement and it doesn’t help the game in our way at all.”

More positive, David McGoldrick and Teddy Bishop both came off the bench in the second half, the latter making his first appearance of the season.

“I’m pleased to have them back on the pitch playing and at the end of the game I had Reg [Luke Varney] on, Didzy on and I had Bish on and was conscious of the time I gave them. I thought Reg gave us a really good shift for 45 minutes.

“And the other two lads, it’s difficult coming back and trying to be as sharp as you possibly can and need that whatever it is, that little bit of something, that spark when you haven’t been playing. That’s a gamble, but it’s good to have them back on the pitch.

“It’s a gamble worth taking in my book to try and get them on the pitch and try and get them some minutes.”

The Town boss had praise for keeper Bialkowski, who made an important double save in the second half and put in another very good display.

“He did, he always does. I’ve no problem with that at all. We’ve managed to keep another clean sheet but we’ve not scored, which leaves us with a point.”

Charlton boss José Riga was pleased with his team’s performance, believing only a goal was missing.

“We did very well, we created good opportunities, had some very good action offensively, we were strong defensively and we were even better than Ipswich on the strength of Ipswich, the set pieces,” he said.

“At the end only one goal is missing and we had the opportunities. We deserved the three points but deserving is not having, so our situation is very difficult.”

The draw and results elsewhere leave the Addicks seven points off safety with their Championship status hanging by a thread.

Riga added: “Until the end, while mathematically it’s still possible, we have to think about being able to make a miracle.”

It is time we ,the fans , the sponsors and probably his employees actually hear from and SEE this invisible man called Marcus Evans
If football is a business, as it is, then the investors in it ie us etc deserve to see some vision. Some plan something
Milne said we had money to spend but Mick , in January said we don't as there is no one out there better than we have !
Since January 01 we have won 5 in 17 games
That is since MM was 'rewarded with a new two year deal"
Somebody show me how and where are rebuilding ?
I say it again Whenever we have had a chance to push on in key must win games we have come up short
Why ? In a game u HAVE to win does he still insist on two players like Skuse and Douglas - Skuse ok but not him Douglas
Look at how he handled Bart ? GerKen is not a better keeper but his stubborn streak defies logic
MM knows a thing or two about defending yet has played a good right footed cb at rb and 2 left footed cvs
Freddie Sears is best played down the middle
So he puts him out wide
Bru more effective in middle
Parr Oar?
We have Matt Clarke on loan and a couple of young full backs who I think if MM had shown some faith in had the ability
But no - if u are happy to be a mid table team with little or no desire to even try and play through the midfield instead of over it then that is your choice
Personally after 3 and a half years from a man who is very very well compensated I expect more
Not in reasonable
Time to reveal what you are and who u are ME
We all want what is best for our club and we are owed at least some transparency
Have a little look closely at his business empire

I don't understand how people can say we don't have the players to play football and that MM is doing the best with the players we have.

Freddie - obviously loves the ball at his feet to run at people or into space
Pringle and feeney - similar to Freddie both a little more creative but like ball at their feet
Fraser - yes now injured but very impressive at the start of the year, played in the Bournemouth team last year and look how they played
Pitman - as above Bournemouth
Douglas - captain of Brentford team that played great football last few seasons!
AMN - Arsenal, not a bad football team!
Bish and dids - both injured this year but capable of playing football.

They are individuals that are capable of playing football so it is all down to Mick and his tactics! Ever since reading away we stopped attacking and set up to never get beat!

I forgot Foley ? Comes in plays it out looking forward and then disappears
MICK cannot change at 57 his focus on playing matches
'NOT TO LOSE' as opposed to when you have must win games ie now or in cup matches "go all out to win'

Douglas is certainly difference class. Compared to most of the midfield players who have pulled on the blue shirt. From Elsworthy to Holland !

I just wonder how this is going to affect the sale of season tickets next season.Three shots on target all night,is that really top six material.NO.Terrible team selection and tactics. So who is to blame now, then.!!There were so many people where I sit totally fed up now with the whole set up at the club.We just seem to be going backwards instead of improving.Surely MM can see that the midfield he puts out cannot string a forward pass between them.Something has to give,Sooner rather than later.!! I'm so p@@@@d off with everything.

Taricofan until you can come up with a name let's stick with what we have got to change is a gamble we couldn't afford to lose how many managers have Leeds Charlton Bolton Brentford etc had we are still above them looking at it from that angle MM and TC have worked miracles to do what they have done with the very average squad at their disposal.

Boring boring boring - I have emailed the ticket office to cancel renewal of my season tickets and it feels like a weight off my mind because at least I will now not be sponsoring this dire football. Supporters should vote with their feet and demand ambition otherwise nothing will change and mid table mediocrity and atrocious football will just be the norm. Part of me hates having to do this but I think nothing else will prompt a change..

The general consensus on this site is MM should go and we bring in a new manager that can do better with what's at his disposal. In defence of MM over the last two season he's seen our best two players sold and no money being given to repurchase, that has to have an impact on the team, yet in spite of that we are still comfortable in league and will probably only miss the playoff zone by 5-9 points. I've followed the Town for a long time and the likelihood of us finding another Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson, John Lyall or George Burley is pretty slim. Yes we'd all like a an Eddie Howe but recently we've had Jewell, Keane & Duncan which I assume all had grand ideas but none of them could pull it off. I remember Joe Royal being lambasted by the supporters as he tried to fill the boots of Burley and in hindsight did a fantastic job. I think in time MM will probably be regarded in same light if god forbid we ever hit the depth of division one which has looked probable before MM came, so yes "Be careful what you wish for" as managerial history has proven within this club it may be a lot worse.

Time for change. This club is going nowhere fast. Can't really blame MM as he operates on no budget, though I'm struggling to think of a worse player I have seen than Douglas. The football is dire to watch - we are losing our identity as a proper footballing club whilst the rest of the world is moving forward. Two consecutive years we have got to the Jan window in a good place, and two times we have made no investment and lost out. ME seems to have decided that we are just going to be a middling championship club, but there is no way that we are smaller than Swansea, Stoke, Southampton etc, so why should we be resigned to that?

blueherts added 09:38 - Apr 6
We just need transparency
Milne says MM had money to strengthen
MM in January there was no one out there better than who we had
All I know is we will never get promoted with one foot on the brake which is how mic sets up his teams
Sometimes he leaves the handbrake on and puts the midfield in reverse
In games we really need to win over past year or so when we could have pushed on we fell up short
Remember we got into the play offs last season by default 3 and a half years in I expect a better framework and set up
5 wins in 17 is Not acceptable

Upon THIS the latest allout footballing fiasco, both playing-wise, goal-wise and point-wise! (by this according to 442 The MOST boring team to watch in the UK and thus now also nominated as the MOST boring team in Europe :-), and thus btw very much also an crystal clear ACCOUNTABLE managerial fiasco too!!! , this against either another season long bottom crawling struggling or no-longer-anything-to-play-for championship side which ANY team with genuine promotion ambitions simply ought to not only 1st and foremost: TURN UP with a much much more aggressive and non-hedgehog-like approach against (both tactically and personnelwise .... especially in midfield!!!), but simply also ought to 'just' flat out beat!.Period! ........... Well I simply can't help but feeling somewhat compelled to reprint part of a September 2015 East Anglian Daily Times's Q & A on how to get over "tough times" to our very own Mick 'The Dinosaur' McCarthy:

Q: So how does one get over them tough days Mick?

A: "What do you do when you've had a bad day in the office??? Do you go and cry in the corner, do you go and get rocking drunk??? I don't know. Do you go and do something bonkers???

Or do you go back to work and get back to doing something that you're quite CLEARLY good at???"

ROFL!

Well 1st of all I principally simply must agree with one of the journalists who relayed this story in another football media very own remark to the above: "That personally, I had always thought that getting "rocking drunk" was one of the better answers to a BAD day! ..... but Mick 'The Morally Correct Man' apparently feels that this is an quite inadequate response!" :-) lol

Secondly I sincerely fail to see what it is exactly Mick thinks he is sooooo "quite CLEARLY good at" THESE days??? Cause throughout 2016 that have been a LOT (as in way too many!) "Bad days at the office" for the ultra stubborn Yorkshireman currently managing the once proud FOOTBALL club known as Ipswich Town FC!!! As we have discussed here a million times he keeps making the same same ol' donkey-arrrhhhZzz stupid & arrogant MISTAKES (while quite obviously personally expecting different results???!!! .... which of course according to Albert e=Mc2 is the definition of nothing short of INSANITY! lol) game after game after game after game! Whether it's starting back-4, starting dross midfielders with not 1 ounce of creativity in them! and with common for all 6-7 of those dudes combined: Quite incapable of even the most simple quality forward-going passing .... on the ground!!! Or whether it's other examples of round-pigs-in-square-holes & and playing players out of their favorite and best positions! (Sears comes to mind!), or whether it's vintage Mick super mindboggling 2nd half substitutions ... many of which either come too late or consists of keeping UNcreative players on the field instead of taking them off/or keeping them off i.e. in games we are not winning!!!, or whether it's just overall ultra COWARDICE tactical "Lets-focus-97%-on-NOT-losing-rather-than-focusing-fully-instead-simply-on-winning" approach and game plan (a game plan with btw have nothing ever resembling a viable Plan B!!!) .... or whether it's arrogantly repeatedly refusing to reinforce the team in the winter transfer windows boldly claiming: "There are NO one out there better (and thus more creative) than what I have already personally scraped together"???!!!!, or whether it's also simply REPEATEDLY generally piZzziiiing on and disrespecting especially the long-time fans and season-ticket holders in various forms, both on and off the field???

Yep I repeat: I really fail to see what it is exactly Mick thinks he is sooooo "quite CLEARLY good at", at this point of his glorious Anti-football managerial career and especially this season???
Hmmmm perhaps then he should actually reconsider the above-mentioned Q & A again, these here "turgid" days of his .... meaning you dear Mick ---and WE the fans (paying as well as non-paying ones) -- might quite possible ALL benefit from you going and get serious "rocking drunk" on a weekly basis??? :-) :-) :-) :-) HaHaHaHa
Yep, Think deeply about that one you stubborn Zzzilly Dinosaur!

Yeah essex57 I'm telling everyone what to do with their money aren't I. Are you a total idiot ? U think everyone on here is going to do what I tell them ?? Doh !!! I will not be renewing after 36 years and it hurts me terribly but I have to make a stand. I've not told anyone else what to do, unlike you I think they all have a brain and can make their own decision !!! If you are happy to accept mediocrity that's your choice you get on with it but don't tell me I'm making others do anything they don't want to do. Enjoy 12k crowds watching hoofball and with this leadership and dross selection and play, a relegation scrap next season.

Investment or lack of it is only a small part of the problem..said it the other week, you could put McCarthy in charge of Barcelona today and by the weekend he'd have them playing 3 defensive midfielders and hoofing it forward at every opportunity..that's his style (or lack of it).

If Mick was doing this sort of job at Rotherham or Preston then he'd be getting plaudits BUT he's churning out this drivel at a club (who used to have) a good reputation for playing attractive, attacking football..does Marcus Evans realise this?

What I don't want is us getting rid of McCarthy and Marcus thinking to himself "now then, who else has got a team promoted out of this league recently?" because he's tried that 3 times now and failed quite miserably..we need a manager that suits our club's & our fan's needs.

Promotion is still possible this year but we need to win our last 6 games and then the play-offs..if Mick can do that then i'll eat my words..I personally can't see us getting more than 7 or 8 points at most from here on.

Whilst i respect we will all have differing opinions I am curious how some people can see this season as progress and still ' re building'
3 and a half years and we still have two left footers at CB and a CB at RB
Famous old quote and one I would have thought MM would live by - build a good team from the back forward - Bart is a decent keeper but this and last season - esp Jan onwards we have been suspect at the back - which is probably why he insists STILL on playing two or three holding midfielders !
Yes the players have responsisbility but who sets them up , 'coaches and trains them each day
The buck stops with Mick
( and the invisble man )

Think you may have hit the nail on the head. Great post as always.

Blueherts

Can see us losing a fair few players at the end of this season. McGoldrick and Murphy will be looking for pastures new. Smith may decide that it's time to go (hence the Digby transfer). Mcdonnells career is going nowhere here so he may move. Doubt Foley or Tabb will be here next year (think Foley is great just think he will go). If we are looking for big name transfer fees (like we have the last 2 seasons), then we may be looking to sell Sears, Bishop and/or Bialkowski. Think Coke has a 3 year contract with us so he will stay.

Can see us trying to sign a couple of players from the bottom 3 sides at the end of the season on frees.

I work in Norwich and this site has come the must visit site for all the Carrot fans In the office to have a laugh at the stupid inane negativity.

I know I will get minus votes but in the 45 years I have been a proud tractor boy I never seen such stupidity amongst our once great fans. Clubs home and abroad used to be so envious of town for out fantastic fans now we are a joke

feel sorry for the season ticket holders really do.
paid £33 for away ticket to the sheff weds away game and I really don't want to go.
whats the point anymore.
we don't try and win games, we don't play football.
I could cry, never been so disinterested in an Ipswich side in 25 + years.
Super Jim never had any money at the start either and he at least gave us some nice football mostly at home I appreciate that, but we had a small buzz about the place and we had some promising youngsters getting chances.
just awful, im gutted.

Understandably most of the comments have been about Mick's bizarre interpretation of events, but the Charlton manager and his scouts must have been watching a different Ipswich in the build-up to the game - "we were even better than Ipswich on the strength of Ipswich, the set pieces". If set-pieces are seen to be our strength no wonder we have slipped back to mid-table mediocrity as we rarely look dangerous from corners or free-kicks and as for Knudsen's throw-ins...

Look at want the clubs above us have spent on players and their average gates. The only thing different for us this season over last season is we are not getting the ball in the net. Mick will probley be here next season and if so he will have to address having money available for players. People will always be split on mangers and players but at the end of the day this is are club and we should get behind it.

I will renew my season ticket but more out of love for my Team and the camaraderie of the guys in our section of the Sir Alf Stand. The football has been woeful and I feel MM has cheated us all this season with his style of play, Team selections and bizarre ideas of playing so many of the guys out of position. Why can't we just give it a go. Football should be an entertainment not a bore week in week out. He's made our Club a laughing stock.
