Hyam Contract Talks Break Down
Saturday, 16th Apr 2016 20:03

TWTD understands that talks with midfielder Luke Hyam regarding his new Town contract have broken down.

Hyam’s current terms have an option for a further season after the current one, which manager Mick McCarthy reiterated that Town will be exercising on Thursday when he said new contracts for Hyam and Tommy Smith - who has also had an option for anorher year taken up - would be looked at in the summer.

The Blues previously began talks regarding a longer-term deal with the midfielder’s representatives in February but after several weeks of discussions the two sides reached an impasse having been unable to agree the terms of a new contract.

The 24-year-old is understood to be keen to stay with his hometown club, having come through the Blues academy before making his senior debut at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2010/11 campaign.

Hyam, who missed today's draw at Sheffield Wednesday as he was suspended following last week's red card against Brentford, has now made 110 starts and 16 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring three goals.

The former Northgate High School pupil spent time on loan at Rotherham earlier in the season, while other Championship clubs are believed to have shown interest in the past.

Ive heard that contracts are being offered at less money than they are getting now-if thats right, there's going to be a lot of discussions stalling. Low wages are why we cant attract decent players in the first place, so expect more old journeymen coming for their last two years

If he wants to play every week, at least for next season, then I think that it would be best for Luke to move on. As a defensive midfielder Skuse has far more nous. As things stand we have too many defensive midfielders and Luke is best moving to a club who are looking for a player to play that specific role as he did sucessfully at Rotherham. Our Midfield needs to be very different next year especially in the ability to score goals or even to simply move or pass through the middle. Last year, as I remember, we were prepared to let Anderson go over contract wrangles and I thought that he was more than half decent. If we were prepared to let Ando go, I can't see any real reason to go the extra mile to keep Luke.

On the same day as combative midfielder Karl Henry is linked, contract talks with combative midfielder Luke Hyam break down... So I would be surprised if improved terms are offered, but not surprised if Hyam left.

Maybe Hyam didnt display enough as Captain in the Portsmouth defeat to impress Mick because it seems you need to be Captain material to be regularly considered for Mick's team - Skuse (captained Bristol City), Douglas (captained Brentford), Foley (captained Wolves) and now Henry? (Captained Wolves)

Good, let him go, let him go. Was a good holding midfielder but not really done much recently to impress (I know he had a bad injury). When we got new youngsters like Bish and now Dozzell coming through (and hopefully Blanchfield & McDonnell), not to mention Bru. According to Wikipedia, we currently have 17 first team midfielders :O Yes 5 are in on loan and one is currently out on loan but we don't need that many.

My idea for next year:
GK - Keep both Gerks and Bart (both have been great and had their moments), but we need someone with a bit consistency. Loan out Crowe and Henly
DF - We need a proper RB and then Smith, Chambo and Berra can contest for the 2 CBs to improve their game. Knudsen is good considering how quickly he has gotten used to English football. Loan out the youngsters (Piotr, Yorwerth, Clarke, Robinson, Kenlock, Hammond & Emmanuel). Not seen much from Foley or Digby, Digby could be a good youngster but we need someone more experience at RB and get rid of Foley
MF - Get rid of Hyam & Stewart. Let AMN go back to Arsenal (started off well, then quickly downhill). Please sign Feeney, Fraser and/or Pringle (we need some decent wide players). Bish (when he is 100%) and Bru would be great together in the middle. Keep Coke, Skuse & Toure for backup along with some of the youngsters (Dozzell, McDonnell, Blanchfield). Tabb and Douglas can have their moment, but they are few and far between so I would probably let them go. Loan out Benyu and maybe McDonnell & Blanchfield if we don't really use them that much
FW - Sears start along (up front not wide) with Murphy. Pitman is good as an impact sub. McGoldrick has great moments as well so this is a bit harder. Varney might be handy to keep around more for the younger players benefits. And please call up Ben Morris, he is doing fantatsic in the under 18s. Maybe loan him out

Good news. Be glad to see him go, average at best.

We shouldn't let Hyam go for free. we need players not loose them.

We should keep Hyam & Smith.

Hyam is good for Back up/Cup games (Lower league teams) or lower positioned teams in the league.

We should defiantly keep Tommy smith

Not quite sure if the Hyam game is his natural game (I suspect it is) - or the way McCarthy has instilled in him to play.

Whatever - the forward pass, and flair, is just not part of his game.

Has to be said that McCarthy is far more interested in stopping teams from playing - than actually taking the game to opponents.
